Duh. Want to know why we're getting fatter? Just look at the food in the

supermarkets. Want to know why other western nations are seeing the same?

Go look at THEIR supermarkets. Want to know why nations we send food to and

those that mimic western ways are seeing the same? Look at THEIR food.

Gee willikers, could there be a common therad here? Is it possible that all

of these nations are eating foods that are high in fats, high in sodium,

high in added sugars, and junked up with more preservatives and additives

than viable nutrients?

At least the active lifestyle of the industrial revolution kept the obesity

at bay a bit, but now that we've moved into the information age where most

jobs are actually sedentary, there's nothing to hold it back. At least the

aliens will be happy when they come down... " To Serve Man " . ;) (Yes, yes

I know, - it is SO bad! The new " whole grain

white bread " really cracks me up. A lady in front of

me at the grocery store on Tuesday had four loaves of

it, and I just wanted to smack her. BUY REAL FOOD!

If you can't buy it around the perimeter of your

grocery store, you don't need it. For the most part,

anyway!

My son's school has a rule for snacks (he's a

Kindergartner this year, and the parents take turns

bringing daily snacks): Fruits and Vegetables Only!!

I was so excited to hear that. My kid won't be

getting junk at school! Now if only they can make the

school lunches so healthy. We don't live in Florida

where they changed the school lunches to mimic none

other than South Beach!

Could not agree with you more.. except that activity

level really cannot combat what is happening in our

supermarkets.. Children today are overall heavier then

they used to be..

Point in fact my sister who walks 8 miles per day

outweighs me by 40 pounds.. She is only 3 years older

than I am.. and although she covers over 40 miles a

week double the amount I do.. still she is heavier.

The reason for our difference in weight is simply

diet.. we are both the same height and bone

structure.. I am 110 pounds and she is 150 pounds..

Bring on those Twinkies, Zingers, Ho-Ho's, fruit pies, donuts, cookies,

chips, and... oh yes, the diet Coke to supposedly cancel out the junk food.

Don't you love it when you see someone at the grocery counter week after

week and that's all they evey buy? They live on this and nothing else.

Hi Chuck...

I could not agree with you more.. You would have to do

a complete marathon daily just to burn up all you

ate.. and we all know this is virtually impossible for

any one of us to keep up with this in the long run..

please excuse the pun.. lol

But let's face it if I did not eat the way I do.. I

would not be a size 4...

You are what you eat no matter which way you crack

You know something I have always hated is when people make fun of people who get a burger and fries and then order a diet coke ( I know that is not what you are doing but I have got to get this off of my chest lol sorry!). Hello!!! Did it ever occure to those people that maybe, just maybe they are diabetic and cannot have regular coke!! My mom & I go out to eat and she is very diabetic and I know people are thinking that when she orders her food and drink. Makes me wanna decapitate them.... but then again I get pissed off easily and I get violent lol. Especially when it comes to my oh so loving mommy .Chuck Kelsey wrote:

Good thing I was clear with my example ;-) I wouldn't want you to take a slug at me.

The diet drink with a more rational meal is acceptable to me. Obviously a person buying all those sweets along with the diet drink are not diabetic.... at least I hope. Yikes!

You know, forgive me for being obtuse here, but what exactly is the

*government* supposed to do? Spend more money to promote the healthy

lifestyle we already know we need? Advertising campaigns? Tax breaks

if you fall within an acceptable weight limit? I understand the need to

call attention to some very alarming statistics (though I don't see that

it is in any way a surprise) but how is the government going to help

*me* to lose weight? They can't force me to exercise or make good

choices. That's my job, my problem, my choice to be healthy or not.

What policy can they possibly come up with to make people healthy? what

am I missing? They seem to be blaming the government that they are not

doing enough--it's not the government's fault that I am fat. They

haven't neglected me--I HAVE! It's my fault that I have chosen for

years to eat bad food and not exercise consistently enough.

It doesn't really combat it, just slows it down a little bit. The food

industry has consistently decreased the nutritional value of foods over the

years such that even an active lifestyle cannot combat it. :(

I have a niece who is only 14 and is something like 4'8 " . She weighs more

than my current goal weight. IIRC, she's something like 180. VERY

disconcerting. I've tried to get her interested in healthy eating and the

such but her mother is overweight and they live in a household filled with

garbage foods -- what can one expect? <Sigh>

FWIW, not everyone who does that is diabetic. I've gone to lunch with many

men and women over the years who I *KNEW* were *NOT* diabetic and they would

order up a meal and a half -- lots of fat/grease, salt, sugar, etc -- then

get a diet soda. I always laugh at them and ask them why they would do

that, considering the rest of their meal. Funny thing -- the women are

usually dieting and the men joke it off as " watching their girlish figure "

or something similar.

I've always wondered why the guys truly did it. One told me he preferred

the taste but other than that, every man I've known who did it gave a

sarcastic/humoresque response (as would be expected -- it's a guy thing

<Grin>).

That's interesting -- I haven't seen that 'un yet. Whole grain white bread,

I've argued with a number of folks over the years about the " shop the

perimeter " concept. Many think it's untrue but I've found it to be the case

more oft than not when shopping for food. Granted, we buy stuff from the

inside of the store as well but the simple fact of the matter is that the

healthy stuff is all around the perimeter -- fruits and veggies in the

produce corner, then there's the dairy corner with the juices and eggs right

there as well, and of course the meat/delicatessen sections are along the

perimeter as well. The only real exception to the rule is the baking aisle

-- spices, flours, and so forth are typically to the middle.

There's been a strong movement afoot to make schools healthier places for

kids. It's long overdue.

Quite frankly I like the taste of diet coke better than regular coke.

Every so often I go off my plan like if I somewhere I can't get anything healthy, like Cedar Point. Anyhow, I did get one of their "baskets" with a sandwich and fries, and a Diet Pepsi. Even though I was not eating on plan, I didn't want to give into all the sugar, AND it took me a long time like Diet Pepsi. I don't think it would take long to get used to regular Pepsi again, and I don't want to have to learn to like Diet Pepsi again, so no matter what I end up eating, I would still always get a Diet Pepsi or Lite Lemonade or something. I do agree...we must take responsibility for our own actions. But it does seem we are getting very bad at that lately. While I agree we have been at times sold a bad bill of goods by the marketers we need to give ourselves a wake up call and recognize our intelligence to know some things can't be good for us especially in excess. It is like the man who tried to sue Mickey D's because he was in bad health and overweight.

What bugs me is that crap food is cheaper than fresh,

whole foods. I think it should be horribly expensive

to buy processed, nutritionally void foods, and cheap

to buy produce, meat, and other " scratch " ingredients.

I agree 100% ~~~~~~

This is my constant complaint... It is literally

cheaper to " poison " my children, then to feed them

nutritionally...

I remember when I was little, it was cheaper for us to

prepare food at home, that it was to eat out, but not

any more.... ~ I remember this, because I was jealous

of my friends who were " rich " enough to eat at

Mcs regularly...

Wheat bread, was cheaper than white (I prayed we would

buy " Wonder " bread, but we never did...)

~ and man oh man, did I hate that zuchinni was such a

successful crop!!!! It was in everything for

weeks!!!!! LOL ~

And now, (again, our own fault), we have " lost " our

ability to be self sufficient

~ I mean, how many of us have a garden? ~ Today, just

a few.

~ I keep saying I'm going to plant one, but then the

work & effort always DESTROYS my good intentions or

the really ugly bugs....

I told my husband, we are planting some fall items,

because now, we eat more than just corn & potatoes...

I find that, I actually enjoy the vegetables now... I

can't really say that I EVER enjoyed any vegetable,

except the corn & potatoes, prior to South Beach...

This is another reason, I appreciate the South Beach

Diet, because it is re-introducing me to vegetables...

One thing that I don't understand is why buying diet products

is so expensive. If you buy non diet products then it doesn't cost as much.

Doesn't make much sense to me. It's like the grocery stores don't want

people to be healthy.

I agree that was a bs lawsuit. I am the kind of person who expects people to be responsible for their actions. I know that no one made me eat the way I used to eat or made me sit on my lazy ass all day. I would kill for a garden. We always had one at home when I was younger. I live in an apartment where it is impossible. I used to always grow my own tomatoes, green beans, peppers, cucumbers, etc.

Hi Jennny,

Your right to claim ownership for what you decide to

eat.. However unfortunately a lot of people buy into

the advertising they see and think they are eating

healthy foods.. and our children frequent fast food

places that entice them in young..

It takes education to know how to eat propertly and

not everyone gives it as much thought as they really

should.. until they end up having a problem..
