Guest guest
I completely understand. I've been GF forever, and i still get a little down in the mouth when people are appetizing or desserting away and I can't join. My advice? Order some GF appetizer or ask for part of your meal to come with the appetizers. OR order a really luxurious beverage (alcoholic or not, the point is something you enjoy). OR develop a close personal relationship with your oolong or jasmine tea cup. Mmmm tea, so good. I know it's not the same. Also, just think, you're saving yourself the five billion calories in restaurant appetizers! When you're supermodel slim everyone else in your family will be jealous. I'm mostly kidding about this, but there is a bright side! *hugs* > > Well, not a whole night, actually. Guest guest
Esther, Did you check to see if any could be made gluten free? We frequent a Thai restaurant near us. The only soup we can't have is the wonton soup. We can eat their chicken sate and spring rolls as well. Jupiter, FL another night sad about GF Well, not a whole night, actually. You can start by using on of the free Thai language restaurant cards on Celiac Travel. http://www.celiactravel.com/restaurant-cards.html -patrick
Guest guest
They speak English very well at the Thai restaurants near us, but we do have the same problem at the local Chinese restaurants. I tried the family-owned Chinese take-out close to here and spent 5-10 minutes trying to communicate, only to find out that the soy sauce had wheat in it. Haven't tried the PF Changs near us because we switched from Chinese to Thai before going gluten free. We were lucky enough at one point to be a host family to a Taiwanese college student while living in Cincinnati. He was fluent in English, so he was helpful in communicating with the restaurants. Wish he was living here now. Re: another night sad about GF >> Esther,> Did you check to see if any could be made gluten free? We frequent aThai restaurant near us. Guest guest
Thanks! I printed Mandarin and Thai. Esther > > > Wow, wouldn't I love a GF appetizer! Guest guest
There are some really good Celiac dining cards (printed in the language appropriate to the food type) that you can bring with you. I bought the ones from www.triumphdining.com I like them because they are tailored to each type of food. On the Chinese one, it says in big bold letters " Soy sauce is brewed with wheat and I cannot eat anything containing it " . It also references common ingredients that can't be used. You might want to check into something like that. Sue in Denver > > > > Esther, > > Did you check to see if any could be made gluten free? We frequent a > Thai restaurant near us. Guest guest
One solution would be to have your dinner brought when the others get their appetizers/soups. We do that often, as I don't think it is fair/polite for some to eat while others are forced to wait and watch. I don't mind dawdling and being social while others finish, but everybody should be able to start together. Maureen > > The part that made me sad is that we all went there tonight.
