Louise,

Thank you for the link I will check it out. It's hard when a child or adult

first get an implant if they never have spoken before because it is natural

if they can't hear the sound to just move their mouth and think they are

talking like you. And of course when they hear for the first time they aren

t suddenly going to know what they are hearing it is just sound. It usually

takes intense therapy to help them to realize what they are hearing. It's

the same with a blind person who has the surgery to get their sight back, if

they have never had sight it is like being a baby all over again. It is

really tough on everyone around but such a wonderful thing too I would think

I had a friend with a child who was deaf and was implanted at around 3

years old by which time he was a fluent signer. For a few months he would

take his implant off and put in his pocket because it was different and kind

of scary for such a little guy. Then when he got used to it he loved it.

The funny thing was by the time he was 4 he would pretend he couldn't hear

even when he had it on. He still signs sometimes and his parents sign to

him, mostly because you can't wear the implant in the water so when he doesn

t have it on they still want to be able to communicate to him, but he is a

very good speeker at 6 years old now. It just takes a while of intense

therapy to get to that point.

It is nice to know you understand. It is so hard when most audiologists out

there don't consider that central hearing loss is an actual loss, because it

isn't a loss of sensitivity in most cases it is a loss of acuity. In many

cases and we believe in 's as well his brain doesn't even respond to it.

He responds better to environmental sounds than to speech which he rarely

responds to ever. We have tried clapping to get his attention or knocking

on something but he doesn't look, but yet when someone knocks on the door

occasionally he will go to it and knock, so go figure. People just don't

understand the whole he can hear but doesn't understand it thing and it is

so old to try to explain it to strangers passing by. It's hard to explain I

m sure that just because your child can hear with the implant she is still

deaf. doesn't even look at them when they talk to him though and they

still look at me like they are waiting for him to say something. I met a

friend I hadn't seen for almost a year today and she asked " So can hear

now? " It is so frustrating I know I have gone over this so many times but I

told her again that he can hear the sound he just doesn't understand what he

is hearing. She was confused because as far as brain development goes he is

slightly delayed but he has severe language delay 4-5 standard deviations

below the mean. In cognative development he is 2 standard deviations below

the mean, but we think that is because we can't tell him to do anything or

teach him if there is no language comprehension. But we are finally getting

some sign language comprehension and I think this will make all the

difference. I am going to check out that website, I found another that I

liked but there is really little info out there about central hearing loss

and most states don't acknowladge that as a type of loss. Ours states that

a hearing loss is a loss of hearing acuity which he has, but the schools

want to fight it and we don't have the money to higher a lawyer to get them

to change their ideas. Right now they are providing him with a class that

uses total communication which is the type we have chosen for . I'm

happy with that, and I think he will do really good in the structured

environment of the class. I am so excited for him to start. Finally

someone else can worry about his difficulties for a few hours...hehe. We

are going to work really closely with the teacher on what signs she is

working on and telling her which ones we are introducing so we can just

bombard him with it. He is just ready for that. After his last surgery is

just just ripe to learn it is so cool.

Hi,

My name is Louise, my 8 year old daugther , was born with a

profound hearing loss. She was implanted 4 years ago with the Clarion

S-Series Cochlear implant. She had never heard a sound in her life

before her hook-up day in 1999. It changed our lives and we are so

grateful. Before the CI we used sign language. She did not use her

voice much and would imitate us talking by opening her mouth but no

sound would come out. After the hook-up it took some time for her to

react to sound but the audiologist told us that she was hearing and

gradually she began repeating sounds and now she is in an oral

school. She still needs to work on her pronounciation but she is

improving every day.

I sure can relate. After my daugther was implanted and that

she started to be vocal she wanted to talk so badly that she would

answer people vocally but what she was saying had no meaning it

sounded like Bla bla bla bla bla and people would look at me and

say " what " . It was hard to say she was deaf because she heard the

person talk and I had to explain that she was hearing with her

implant but did not understand what she was hearing.

If I understand correctly your son does have a hearing loss. It is a

rare kind. There are four kinds of hearing losses. The most common is

sensorineural but there is also conductive, mixed and central hearing

loss which would be the same kind as your son, again if I understood

correctly. Here is a link to a site that explains all four

categories, for those who are interested.

Take care,

Louise

My son also uses a CI, however in my explanations to people in public I still

say, " is deaf. He uses a cochlear implant to help him hear. "

Hi All,

My name is Amy and I am from MA. I am very serious about losing weight. I

got on the scale last night and weighed in at 171. That is extremely high

for me. Granted I was fully clothed with a swatshirt and sneakers, but even

still that would leave me at 166. I have never weighed more than 164. I am

healthy at about 125-130. I was there about 5 years ago after doind weight

watchers. What I love about WW is that I can eat anything I want in

moderation. For me this works. I have tried the low card thing, the blood

type thing, the zone, etc. For mee eating normal, but being reasonable in my

portions is what works. My problenm is that I for get that I can't go back

to my old ways of eating. I start off great then fall back into my old

habits. I am going to weigh myself tonight the way I normally do,, then

continue to do it like that from now on. I need to drink more water as I

think I may drink about 3 glasses a day and suplement that with diet soda and

coffee. My goal is to drink at least 8 glasses a day or water. I love cream

in my coffee. Does anyone have any good substitiutes that will taste

similiar with out the extra points or calories. Thanks for letting me be a

part of this group. I also need to get motivated to exercise.

Hi everyone :))).

Just wanted to say "hi" to everybody. Thanks for having me. I am Steph, 30, mom to Keziah, 2 and married to Ken, 37. We live in Germany, but Ken is Irish, so I hope that we one day move "home". That would be great.

I am currently 107 kg (guess that equals 235 lbs). Last year around this time I was 114 kg (250 lbs). Anyway I want to lose more weight. 90 kg or 200 lbs would be great! I follow a programme described in a book called "Only fat people don't eat breakfast" - it basically includes eating loads of fruit and veggies and exercise.

What programmes do you follow?

This week I haven't been doing so great. I was invited to a party on Satuday and ate too much there. Plus I have a bladder infection with light fever (been to the doc yesterday and I am on antibiotics, so I don't feel like exercising!).

Love

Coco

They told me to call back after a week and check on it so I called yesterday and they were shipping some. Mine hadn't been shipped yet,but could have gone out yesterday. She told me to call back Monday for a more accurate answer.
