Guest guest Posted February 24, 2006 Report Share Posted February 24, 2006 Okay, I must have been wrong in my previous post where I stated that since GM is changing all their cereals over to whole grains that must be why they are eliminating wheat starch. The Trix, Cocoa Puffs, and other GM cereals I checked at the store today ARE labeled as whole grain, but every single one of them has wheat starch in the end of the ingredients list in the midst of all the vitamin names. It is too easy to miss, I had to look three times before I saw it. I don't know why they have to add the wheat starch in there. And how can they claim it is whole grain? It is whole grain, ground up and wheat starch added! And I don't know if Kix will ever be just corn either, since it is whole grain corn and whole grain oats...sigh...so it is just the Islandberry Crunch for us here. I read the box over and over and saw that oats was no longer in the first line of ingreadients. I read the ingredients over and over and happily bought the box and fed it to my celiac sons. They ate it and enjoyed it so much. Then, I got home and read your e:mail. I checked the box again and in horror saw "Wheat Starch". I began to cry and had to tell my sons that they could no longer eat Trix. They handled it so well. They asked me to stop crying and said, "But atleast we don't have a stomach ache". I immediately sent an e:mail message to General Mills asking them how could they claim a Whole Grain general that lists corn in its first line, only to add wheat startch to it. I doubt that they will reply or even care, but for tonight I cannot stop crying. I like them, especially the peanut butter flavor, and they are guaranteed to be gluten free. Don't take it so hard though... mistakes happen and it's ok. Sounds like your boys are pretty cool about the whole thing- don't let it get you down. I never had any cereal more interesting than corn puffs as a kid, and i didn't care one way or the other. I did Email them with a question and a thanks and they replyed back to me the next day. Hopefully you will get a response from them and they were very kind to me. It does NOT mean that they only use a single grain or that there can't be portions of other grains used. As always, you have to read the ingredients every single time! There is Trix cereal out there that does not have oats or wheat starch in it...I have some in my cupboard here. They like some of them, but really love the ones they used to eat prior to being diagnosed last year. I'm just always searching for new and interesting foods that they can eat. I can usually spot the word "wheat" a mile away, and to have missed it and given them the cereal, was a first for us in over a year. They will be fine and so will I, it was just a difficult moment yesterday. Thanks for your kind words. I still hear that Trix and Cocoa Puffs boxes are out there with neither oats or wheat starch, but I haven't come across them yet. Guest guest Posted February 26, 2006 Report Share Posted February 26, 2006 I found a box of Cocoa Puffs at a King Soopers in Colorado Springs - there were about 10 boxes on the shelves and about half of them had wheat starch near the end of the ingredient list and the rest did not. I stood in the store and read and reread the box and had my husband read the box and there was no wheat starch in the one I got. After speaking to the Kroger representative, I found out what really happened. The manufacturer of the cereal (not Kroger) added the words " wheat starch " to the ingredients to comply with the new labeling law and because they could not guarentee no cross contamination. The manufacturer did not ADD wheat starch to the cereal, but those words were a 'cover your butt' strategy to avoid lawsuits. This may also be the case with any other cereal that recently added the words " wheat starch " to their ingredients list. As you well know, there is always a chance for cross contamination when we buy processed foods. Contact the manufacturer for more information on ingredients. They changed their forumlation (they dump in a handful of wheat starch) as they didn't feel they could clean the equipment well enough between different products and wanted to avoid liability from trace CC. It was easy to spot which stores used their product, as they all changed label at the same time. Adding " wheat starch " to a label without actually adding the ingredient would be consumer fraud and illegal labeling as well.
