The flu shot is recommeded as long as you are not in your first

trimester of pregancy. I received an e-mail at work (I work in a

clinic) that said contradictions for having the flu shot are :

allergy to eggs, allergy to thimerosol and first trimester of

pregnancy. Also in our OB department there are signs everywhere

recommending a flu shot for patients who are currently in their

second and third trimester of pregancy. My daughter was born in

November so I didn't need to have one. I hope this helps.

Debbie C,

If you get the flu during pregnancy, it can be VERY damaging to a

fetus. The high fever that you get during the flu is what causes the

damage. I also verified this information with my high risk OB and he

agrees. The shot SHOULD NOT be given during the first trimester but

after that it recommended. Where did you get your information from?

I guess I was in my first trimester when I asked last year. I also

asked my GP this year but she said that if you are ttc it's not a

good idea. I guess because you could be pg.

My doctor told me not to get one (I was/am not pregnant but was

going through IUI). I recently switched to a new doctor however,

who has told me to definitely get the flu shot but quit IUI while we

do further testing. I wish I had more to tell you. I do know that

it varies year-to-year with regard to who should get it.

Good luck with your decision!

Roxie/Debbie,

Thanks for the info re the flu shot. So far my RE, and two OBs side to go for it. I will be seeing the peri on Tuesday. If he said it was ok, I think I will go for it. My concern is the mercury. Roxie, the thermisol you mentioned, I read this is mercury? There was a big article in the NY Times a few weeks ago re increased rates of autism due to the Hepatitis B vaccine (mainly because of mercury!). Who knows, but I will ask one last doctor. I just know that when I get sick, I always get a high fever, even without the flu! The downside would be big.

Thank you both for the info. I always want to hear both sides of the story.

Hi Barbara,

My daughter, Macie, had the flu shot on Monday...the third year

for her. Her ped has recommended it for her and her sister (her dad

and I as well) because of their history of seizures (her little

sister has had febrile seizures). She did fine each time she had

it. She is having breakthrough seizures right now, but she was no

worse after the shot. We gave tylenol beforehand, and a couple more

doses over the next day. If this is your daughter's first time

getting the vaccine, she'll get it in two doses (can't remember for

sure, but I believe it was either one or two weeks apart).

By the way, my kids get their shots at the local health

department because my husband's sister is the supervising nurse

there. I didn't have to pay for their shots this year. She said

they qualified under a federal program that funds the vaccine for

children at risk because of health concerns. Might be worth

checking into. It saved us $30.

Unfortunately, I heard on the news this week that the targeted

flu type for the vaccine this year isn't the same type that has been

showing up in the population. I guess it is a gamble each year to

try to predict which strain of flu will be worst. I'm sure all

types are prowling around out there, and they are predicting a bad

year. At least they'll be protected from one of the strains.

Good luck,

Glenna

Hi!

Don't know if this will help you or confuse you more. Last year our

neurologist and pediatrician both recommended we give Stockton the

flu shot (he was NOT on the diet at the time.) We gave him the shot,

but he still was sick quite a bit through the winter. This year our

pediatric epileptologist at Hopkins has ordered us to NOT give

Stockton a flu shot. He just started the diet in August, so maybe

the doctor's orders had to do with Stockton being so new to the diet

and still adjusting. Also, we have been weaning him from

phenobarbitol and I know Hopkins is really strict about having only

one change going on at a time. They said they just didn't want

anything interfering with the process. So, we'll see how this winter

goes.

Good luck with your decision!

Oooh I'm jealous! I have to wait until the end of October to get mine and

I'm keeping my breathing to a minimum when I'm out because of it. LOL!

Glad to hear you are feeling better, I hope your little guy gets over it

quickly.

Hi Rita

Yes, I saw that on the news about the clinics for US citizens in Vancouver

and other places. Apparently, this is supplementary vaccine that was not

purchased by the province. In Canada, we have a universal medicare system

with federal standards, but where each province runs and implements its own.

Most of the vaccine supply is bought by each province for their own

population. In the past, the vaccine has been provided free to people like

me who have a chronic condition, seniors over 65, etc. You just see your own

doctor and he/she gives you the vaccine right then and there (last year we

just got it at dialysis). Other people who don't meet any of those

conditions got the vaccine too, if they wanted it, but they had to pay a

small charge for it (in the vicinity of $10). In recent years, some of the

provinces have just decided to provide the vaccine free to anyone in the

province, hoping to prevent a major outbreak of influenza. The vaccine that

might be made available to US citizens is a separate supply from that. But

even so, some have speculated that this might actually lead to a shortage

for Canadians. Our federal government assures us this is not so. We don't

believe everything that comes out of Ottawa anymore than you guys believe

everything that comes out of Washington :-)

I just hope you can get your shot.

Pierre

Re: Flu shot - further info, plus some transplant news

>

> Pierre - that is totally discouraging news! I don't quite understand the

ins and outs of who is first, second, third and so on and so forth. There

are a few people at my work who have loved ones waiting for livers and

kidneys. Depending on whom you talk to they all have been given very

different information and different criteria for whom is first in line, etc.

It's entirely frustrating. These people are watching their loved ones

slowly slip away and there is not a damned thing they can do about it.

>

> About the flu shot...Since Washington State borders Canada, we have been

given a list of Canadian clinics that are offering the flu shot to US

citizens. One Canadian clinic is actually opening there clinic for one day

just for Americans. I'm seriously considering taking the 4 hour ride to the

border. Viva la Canada! Rita
