I hope all goes smoothly with the GI consult and gtube placement, when the time comes. I am glad to hear Amie is doing ok with the idea. I was very against it at first until Chelsea's health failed because of her aspiration. She also had a nissen done at the same time and cannot burp or vomit, this is to prevent aspiration of her stomach contents. Since her gtube was placed in April of 2000, she has been hospitalized twice, for pneumonia. Once when the croup virus wore her out, and last spring when she aspirated a tooth. I know we would not have Miranda at this point if she did not have one. We almost lost Cam before the g tube because it took all his effort to try and eat. He is so much better now. I also have a child, besides Cam, who does not eat very much. She is 11 (on Feb. 28th) and has asked for a g tube because eating is so painful for her. We have been working on finding the reason for this since she was 2. Anyway, to some kids the tube looks like a good alternative evidently Good to hear things are getting back to normal LOL About the nurse. Kathy, Amie, & Doyle, This is pretty similar to what we noticed with Chelsea after her gtube was placed. After she was dx'd with aspiration, her OT continually told me Chelsea's body was spending most of her energy to keep her healthy. Because she was so healthy, I brushed it off. I was pretty much in denial and very against a gtube. After her condition deteriorated with the introduction of phenobarb, it was apparent she needed a gtube or she wouldn't make it. We were given a lot of gloom and doom about the tube only being a band aid for her deteriorating condition. But fortunatly, her OT was right. After she got over some initial depression, she really bounced back! In the three years since she has had the gtube, she has grown at an astonishing rate, as well as making some good gains in the gross motor and pulmonary area. (although she is still physically at an infant level). I am glad she is able to enjoy some food by mouth, it was so hard having to take away all oral foods from Chelsea.
