Well, so much for sneaking quietly in and getting a feel for the list first! I

guess it is just as well to jump right in. :o)

Actually, I'm not exactly sure I belong on this list, but I'll leave that up to

you.

My name is Angie Madsen, and I joined this list to get some insight on my

husband, who is having a difficult time with FMS. I'm sure you've heard it all

before, so I'll spare you his symptoms.

His situation in complex, because he had a serious head injury 17 years ago that

left him in a coma for 3 1/2 weeks, so he already had mental problems (we just

didn't realize it). But his FMS symptoms didn't start showing up until he was

hit by a car while walking in our neighborhood 2 years ago. He wasn't hit hard,

and it probably wouldn't even have fazed someone else, but with his history he

was strongly impacted (no pun intended).

My biggest concern is the depression. He has the FMS depression on top of the

head injury depression. He just recently saw a neurologist who diagnosed him

with Post Concussion Syndrome and advised him he won't get any better. Now he

has lost hope. He says he feels hollow, and is unable to feel emotion of any

kind -- positive or negative. He just shuts down. It is very frustrating for

me to see him like this.

He has been suicidal for some time. He won't do anything voluntarily, but

wishes he'd get hit by a bus or something to end his unhappiness and suffering.

He just can't comprehend how much we need him still. He hears the words but it

doesn't mean anything to him.

He is in the process of being referred to a psychiatrist to evaluate his meds

(he takes Trazedone and Effexor to help him sleep), but he won't get counseling.

He says he's done that before and they didn't have a clue, and he doesn't want

to waste his time with it. I think his problem is mostly neurochemical anyway,

because of the head injury, and am hoping that the right medication will make a

big difference.

My original intention was for him to have a support group so he would know he is

not alone, and to be uplifted and hopefully be able to lift up someone else.

But he has no interest in reading a bunch of e-mails.

So for now, I joined this list for me to better understand what he is going

through, and to find different ways I can help him. I'm watching for a

treatment or a medication we haven't tried yet, as well as the kinds of things

that help all of you cope from day to day, so I can help him. Of all the people

in the world, his wife should understand, right?

Anyway, now that you've heard more that you probably wanted to (and I could go

on for hours!), thanks for letting me join in and broaden my understanding.
