Guest guest
Hi there, I'm new to the list. Joined WW online a few days ago. First time I've ever done it. Just trying to get myself acclimated to it. The doc recommended it over Atkins as a long-term, lifestyle approach. He called it " humane " . So, here I am. The following post interested me also.... > I shop for a family of three and can get by > with only about $30.00 per week......that includes my 1/2 gallon of lactose > free milk for $3.50 and our favorite high fiber bread at $3.99 a loaf! and > 15 gallons of drinking water and buying things that my DH can eat since he > has to have cholesterol free everything. Around here, generic gallons of water are 56 cents each. Just water alone would run $8.40. Add the milk and bread, and I'd be up to a total of $15.89 plus tax (9.25%!!! I'm in TN) of $1.47. I'm up to $17.36 leaving around $13 for food for 3 people. Where I live, it could be done, but ONLY if I bought bags of beans and generic cans of veggies at Sav-A-Lot. It would also need to be a grain/bean-based diet--a vegetarian diet--which if it has to be cholesterol-free, could very well be. However, with the foods DH and I eat, we generally spend about $75-$100 per week to feed 2 people. That's why I'm liking the WW program. You can eat the types of foods you like, but just limit the portion size. I don't anticipate my food bill going down too much. Portion size may be limited, which means a certain dish could be served at more meals and hold down the cost. But adding the 0 and 1 point snacks in will drive it up. We don't usually have snicky-snacks in the house, as we're hot-air popcorn people. But, that's limited now, sooo..... bring on the lettuce.... which costs a whole lot more than popcorn!!! LOL! Guest guest
I know its' all the rage, but it seems so unhealthy!!!!! Thanks for the Welcome. I feel tremendous on carb reduction diets!!! What an abundance of energy!!! Just never lost weight, which was probably due to too many calories. That's what I like about WW. We can all use our points in a way that suits us personally, and I'll be spending mine on a bacon & eggs breakfast! LOL! I thought I might have to give it up for a grain-based breakfast--which was depressing because carbs put me to sleep. I don't want to have to take a mid-morning nap!! I just gotta rethink smaller portions... not TWENTY slices of bacon, just TWO. Ha! Dawn the Indexlady
Guest guest
Hi Dawn, I'll add my welcome to you too! You'll love the people on this list -- they're warm and caring and so supportive! I like your doctor's characterization of WW as " humane. " My own doctor said WW was the only plan he considers " sustainable. " I like that description too, because that's what my goal is ......to sustain my weight loss FOREVER! Welcome! Bette
Guest guest
Hi Dawn. Welcome to WW and to this list. You'll find lots of support here. The doctors' description of " humane " was great. It is a long-term, lifestyle approach - you can indulge occasioanlly, satisfy cravings and stay on-program. You can celebrate holidays, birthdays, go on vacation, eat out and stay on program. Its' a wonderful program. BTW, I'm really anti-Atkins. I know its' all the rage, but it seems so unhealthy!!!!! I shop for just my DH and myself and we spend at least $75 per week on groceries. That, of course, does include non food items as well. But we do buy almost all fresh lean meats and fish and tons of veggies. We like certain kinds of breads and cereals that are low point, but not cheap. Also, my DH does not have a weight problem (plus he works out all the time) BUT he has a very big appetite. I have learned to measure all my portions, but he doesn't have to, so I guess we could never get by on $30 per week. Guest guest
My daughter was on Atkins for over a year and improved her cholestrol tremendously....plus lost a lot of weight.......my doctor said it was ok but not something to follow for the rest of your life like you can WW. BTW, when my daughter went off of Atkins she gained back everything she had lost and more.........rj My dh just told me Subway was now promoting Atkins. Where will it all end?? It seems no one " gets it " . Everyone wants a quick fix and I guess I have been guily of it in the past also. My DH and I just returned from visiting his family over the holidays and I cannot tell you how many people I encountered through family and eating out that follow the Atkins mentality. Kind of scarey. My dh, although not officially " following weight watchers " ,(he is 6 foot and weighs 172 pounds), does it by accident because of me and really " spreads the word " to all his friends. He even said, about the 4th day of our trip, " I can't wait to get home and eat normal again. " That " normal " is weight watchers. It is definitely becoming a lifestyle for us.
