Hi Angie,

Me too, on the gluten challenge—but I’m

only on day 12 of 42. Today I feel ill enough (mostly migraine) I’m

questioning the need again. Sigh. It’s really hard, isn’t it?

Like you, I’m interested in getting

all of the tests over with as soon as possible. When you see the doc on the 2nd,

perhaps you can insist on scheduling the scope right then? If you wait until

the blood test results come back, you’ll be pushing it out another week

or two. If the bloods are conclusive enough that the scope isn’t needed

(doesn’t sound like that will happen if others were “normal”)

you can cancel the scope. (Oh wait, are you doing blood work with your primary

care doc? I think I would say go ahead and get an appointment with a

gastrointestinal doctor now if you haven’t already.)

8 weeks is a long gluten challenge—maybe

you were gluten free longer than me, but I’m only going 6 weeks. (Only! Still

seems like forever) I can’t imagine at this point that WHEN you eat your

gluten will make any difference.

I don’t have any tips for surviving,

but I’d be happy to hear some…

Subject: eating gluten

for tests

First.... Thank you to all

that contribute to this site, I get so much

help from this great group :)

Ok, here goes.... I'm on week 8 of eating gluten

for the tests to see

if this is CD for sure, and talk about torture,

lol... a few questions

to see if this is " normal " or something

else..... Does anyone else

have trouble with " burning " bm of any

kind i.e. the big d or big c??

I'm having trouble with continuing the consumption

of gluten, getting

so sick within 30-40 minutes of eating

it, and it is really

conflicting with my job.... is it ok to eat all my

gluten in one meal

(like after I get home from work in the afternoon)

or do I need to

spread out the gluten consumption throughout the

day? and last... any

tips or hints on how to get through this last few

days of eating this?

I see a GI Doctor on March 2, but found out today,

he will " start

over " with more blood tests, then

" might " want to do a scope..... have

already had blood tests but that came back

normal..... but because of

family members (father, 1 sister, and 1 brother

having confirmed CD)

and with symptoms I have been having for some

time, family doctor

wants me to go ahead with more testing, so on to a

different doctor

office, and new tests... sorry for rambling....

just so bleepity tired

of all this gluten.

Thanks

Angie

Hey Laurie -- it's your "gluten-mate" Arlene. I agree with everything that you wrote to Angie. I was told by several people that it doesn't matter when you eat the gluten, but it's the quantity that is important. The advice that was given to me recently was "load up on the gluten", so I have been following that advice this week. I think my body is getting used to the gluten and I just feel sick all the time. I can't wait to get this over with, but I am determined not to give up. I only have a couple of more weeks to go............. I have found that yogurt seems to be a comfort food at this time. It seems to make my stomach feel better as long as I take my Lactaid pill with it. And, I have returned to using Pepto Bismol throughout the day. Unfortunately, there is not anything that can make us feel great while we are going through this. I feel so bloated and fat now

and I have been searching through my closet for larger sizes. Before I was diagnosed with "probably CD" in Nov., I was losing weight, but I thought it was due to stress. Now, I am just putting on the pounds like crazy. Sorry for all the complaining -- I just feel lousy. But, just think -- we will be back to GF soon.:) Arlene PS What do you take for your migraines? Hi Arlene,

I take anything for my migraines I can

get my hands on… Seriously, I usually start with Exedrin Migraine because

it often helps. I also have Amerge (which I just took at 3:46 a.m. because I

can sleep for the pain) and Butalbitol which I took through most of the day.

None of the choices seems to work very well any more, though a few years ago I

did get more relief. Heat feels good, or sometimes ice.

I have a hunch that this one is worse

because I know how to get rid of it—stop the gluten. Anger and stress

helps to rev it up.

Enterolab test kits arrived today. I’ll

get that right back out as soon as possible.

Bread in Japan tends to use a particularly high gluten wheat flour- I

wonder if you could find some at a Japanese market and then you

wouldn't have to eat as much quantity of bread and still get all the

gluten you could possibly want... yay, right? Eugh, I can't believe

I'm recommending this.... :P Actually, you could go " veggie " and load

up on wheat gluten based veggie burgers, also. yum-yuck. lol. (yuck to

gluten, not the veggie burger)

Laurie~ I am so sorry that you are suffering so much. I take prescription meds for migraines which usually include a cocktail of Imitrex, Fioricet and Tigan. I have to get into bed in a dark room with no noise and put one of those lavendar scented eye pillows on. Sometimes I use a Thermophore on my forehead (my sister is a big ice believer, but I just can't use ice for a migraine as heat feels better to me.) BUT ~ if I don't go to sleep, then the migraine does not go away completely. Of course, when I am at work, all this is impossible, but sometimes I just have to come home. I get migraines with any great barometric pressure change. I should have been a meteorologist!! What a curse! I didn't know until recently that gluten can be a cause of a migraine. I was so sick all night. I went out for dinner and ordered a crabcake. For

dessert I had a warm chocolate truffle cake (I shared the dessert so don't think I am a total pig). Oh, boy -- what a mistake!!!!!!!! Actually, I guess I did a great job for the gluten challenge, but a terrible thing for my body. I still feel so sick and I, like you, am not sure I can continue this. What are the Enterolab test kits? As I am new to all this, I just want to make sure that I am doing everything that I should be doing. I had lots of blood work done already. My first blood work was before I went GF. The second and third blood draws were when I was GF for a short period of time. Should I be having more done before I go off gluten? I hope that both of our migraines go away

when we’re gf! I’ve had two in two weeks which hasn’t

happened in a very long time.

Enterolab (at www.enterolab.com )is a lab that tests for

gluten intolerance and a few other foods with a stool sample. If you go to this

list’s message board and search on Enterolab you’ll find quite a

few very helpful opinions. You don’t have to be consuming gluten to use

the tests. The problem is that the lab isn’t mainstream and

Gastroenterologist approved, though some people here have been referred there by

GI. I had to think really hard about whether to trust the tests—they’ll

be publishing study results this spring and will be peer-reviewed. There’s

a strong opinion around that the lab work will become pretty common, but

certainly not before next year. I wish we could fast-forward to then! I

especially want to use them for DS who is a needle-phobe and has already declared

that he’s not returning to gluten no matter what I say.

Today I’m going to a nutrition

workshop from a woman who is a nutritionist and whole health counselor. Last

night I read through “Nurturing Traditions” which someone here

recommended—very interesting alternative take on nutrition and digestion.

By the end of the day, I might have given up on the gluten challenge… I

have plans to go to Olive Garden for dinner with girlfriends. I understand that

they can accommodate gf…

Okay, so I am not telling anyone what to do. You have to do what

feels best for you, but I would neccessarily use heat. Ice is much

better because ice constricts your blood vessels and that is what

you want when your head hurts. The heat dilates them, so the blood

is flowing more easily to that part of your body. When you have a

migraine the last thing that you need is to make it pound more.

Does that make sense?

Sounds like you have both figured out

being on gluten is bad for your particular bodies– why keep suffering

when you have your answer? It is my understanding that a gluten challenge

is no longer standard practice by the experts. You couldn’t

pay me to go back to gluten – no matter what the doc said! I was

too, too miserable.

Gastroenterologist approved, though some people here have been referred there

by GI. I had to think really hard about whether to trust the

tests—they’ll be publishing study results this spring and will be

peer-reviewed. There’s a strong opinion around that the lab work will

become pretty common, but certainly not before next year. I wish we could

fast-forward to then! I especially want to use them for DS who is a

needle-phobe and has already declared that he’s not returning to gluten

no matter what I say.

Laurie~

I am so sorry that you are suffering so much.

I take prescription meds for migraines which usually include a cocktail of

Imitrex, Fioricet and Tigan. I have to get into bed in a dark

room with no noise and put one of those lavendar scented eye pillows

on. Sometimes I use a Thermophore on my forehead (my sister is a big ice

believer, but I just can't use ice for a migraine as heat feels better to

me.) BUT ~ if I don't go to sleep, then the migraine does not go

away completely. Of course, when I am at work, all this is impossible, but

sometimes I just have to come home. I get migraines with any great

barometric pressure change. I should have been a meteorologist!!

What a curse! I didn't know until recently that gluten can be a cause of

a migraine.

I was so sick all night. I went out for dinner

and ordered a crabcake. For dessert I had a warm chocolate truffle cake

(I shared the dessert so don't think I am a total pig). Oh, boy -- what a

mistake!!!!!!!! Actually, I guess I did a great job for the gluten

challenge, but a terrible thing for my body. I still feel so sick and I,

like you, am not sure I can continue this.

What are the Enterolab test kits?

As I am new to all this, I just want to make sure that I am doing everything

that I should be doing. I had lots of blood work done already. My

first blood work was before I went GF. The second and third blood

draws were when I was GF for a short period of time. Should I be

having more done before I go off gluten?

Thanks again for all your valuable info.

Hi Arlene,

I take anything for my migraines I

can get my hands on… Seriously, I usually start with Exedrin Migraine

because it often helps. I also have Amerge (which I just took at 3:46 a.m.

because I can sleep for the pain) and Butalbitol which I took through most of

the day. None of the choices seems to work very well any more, though a few

years ago I did get more relief. Heat feels good, or sometimes ice.

I have a hunch that this one is worse

because I know how to get rid of it—stop the gluten. Anger and stress

helps to rev it up.

Enterolab test kits arrived today.

I’ll get that right back out as soon as possible.

Hey Laurie -- it's your " gluten-mate " Arlene. I agree with

everything that you wrote to Angie. I was told by several people that it

doesn't matter when you eat the gluten, but it's the quantity that is

important. The advice that was given to me recently was " load

up on the gluten " , so I have been following that advice this

week. I think my body is getting used to the gluten and I just

feel sick all the time. I can't wait to get this over with, but I am

determined not to give up. I only have a couple of more weeks to

go.............

I have found that yogurt seems to be a comfort food at this time.

It seems to make my stomach feel better as long as I take my Lactaid pill with

it. And, I have returned to using Pepto Bismol throughout the

day. Unfortunately, there is not anything that can make us feel great

while we are going through this. I feel so bloated and fat now and I

have been searching through my closet for larger sizes. Before I was

diagnosed with " probably CD " in Nov., I was losing weight, but I

thought it was due to stress. Now, I am just putting on the pounds like

crazy.

Sorry for all the complaining -- I just feel lousy. But, just

think -- we will be back to GF soon.:)

Arlene

PS What do you take for your migraines?

Like you, I’m interested in getting

all of the tests over with as soon as possible. When you see the doc on the 2nd,

perhaps you can insist on scheduling the scope right then? If you wait until

the blood test results come back, you’ll be pushing it out another week

Of course I think you're taking enough gluten, lol. You poor thing...

I can just imagine how yucky you are feeling, and it makes me cringe.

I was just thinking you could have one slice of the high gluten bread

Becky,

I know…we’re totally pathetic

aren’t we? I absolutely go up and down on whether to stick this out and

get a “gold standard” diagnosis. I felt better today and had a huge

gluten-y meal at Olive Garden tonight, though early today I wondered if I

would. Sigh. It does seem like there was another answer I was after before my

brain fogged over with gluten.

So here’s a good opportunity to

remind me and help newbies. IF the biopsy is positive, what happens differently

in the future? We have a gluten free diet for life, same as gluten intolerance.

We have a mandate to warn our relatives to get screened. We have a good reason

to demand bone scans to check for osteoporosis. (I’m old enough to do

that anyway.) And we have the respect of the medical establishment. For some of

us, a clear diagnosis means it’s easier to stick with the diet life-long.

What else? My books say that “Celiac

disease is too serious an illness to self-diagnose.” Why?

(And, Becky, I would defend to the death

your right never to return to gluten. You are totally in the right.)

Angie,

Can you take someone with you? Someone who

is totally unflappable in the face of doctors? A best friend or a minister or

something? I can go with a friend to a doctor and be a total advocate, asking all

the hardest questions and insisting on answers. But when I’m the patient….

I cave fast.

Actually, that’s good advice for my

own self. I’m going to email my most powerful girlfriend now and get her

Oh, yeah. I was always on fire down south.

That's one of the things I really appreciate about GF. It's not always

burning hot, bleeding, etc., down there.

(If I get a colitis flare up, I'll get the big D again and the belly

cramping and pain... but I've not had the burning yet again.)

I hope you have/had a better experience than I had. I went there on a

Sunday, the minute they opened, LONG before the crowds arrived. I had

a surly waitress, and an unhelpful manager. I didn't get sick, but

I'll never go back. I learned that lesson once. I don't need to be

taught again.

The waitress I had didn't want to bring two salads even though we had

two adults ordering adult meals that could get unlimited salads. I

wanted a salad with no croutons (and no black olives - those are VILE)

and oil/vinegar on the side. Everyone else wanted a traditional salad

with croutons, olives, and Italian dressing. My waitress was witchy

and I had to argue with her at great lengths to get my stupid salad!

I'll never go back.

On the whole, Italian restaurants are just no fun for me any more, and

not worth the risk. Of course, I eat with small children, and it's

easy for me to be glutened by sheer accident.... from a 5 year old

laughing with a mouth full of breadstick, or a 3 year old waving a

breadstick around and shouting " I have a gluten wand! " or someone

little deciding that I need croutons for some reason............

Esther in RI (and if there's any one in the area who wants to know

WHICH O.G. this was, you can ask me in private email.)

Sounds like a nasty restaurant experience.

Ick. I decided to stay on my gluten challenge today, so I ate whatever they put

in front of me. One day at a time. But when I’m gf again, I’ll be

very careful going there. Maybe just ask for the manager right away…

I hope you have/had a better experience than I

had. I went there on a

Sunday, the minute they opened, LONG before the

crowds arrived. I had

a surly waitress, and an unhelpful manager. I

didn't get sick, but

I'll never go back. I learned that lesson once. I

don't need to be

taught again.

The waitress I had didn't want to bring two salads

even though we had

two adults ordering adult meals that could get

unlimited salads. I

wanted a salad with no croutons (and no black

olives - those are VILE)

and oil/vinegar on the side. Everyone else wanted

a traditional salad

with croutons, olives, and Italian dressing. My

waitress was witchy

and I had to argue with her at great lengths to

get my stupid salad!

I'll never go back.

On the whole, Italian restaurants are just no fun

for me any more, and

not worth the risk. Of course, I eat with small

children, and it's

easy for me to be glutened by sheer accident....

from a 5 year old

laughing with a mouth full of breadstick, or a 3

year old waving a

breadstick around and shouting " I have a

gluten wand! " or someone

little deciding that I need croutons for some

reason............

Esther in RI (and if there's any one in the area

who wants to know

WHICH O.G. this was, you can ask me in private

email.)

Thank you... I was really getting worried about this symptom the most,

haven't read about it being one, and the other family members with cd

have NOT had this one

I’ll be right over…good idea

to have everything written down. I’ve been keeping a log as well. I’m

usually not the diary type, but I don’t want to lose any information for

this one.

Glad to be of service.

I think in my case, it had a lot to do with " The Big Hs " . Another

unpleasant term, better left untyped.

After four kids, I have more than my fair share of Hs.

Unfortunately, most of them are REALLY NASTY and internal.

The constant Big D caused them to get really bad. So much so that I

was almost (ALMOST!) ready to be willing to think about the

possibility of maybe one day doing the banding surgery.

Once I went GF, however, and The Big D stopped within days, well

then, the FIRE stopped within days, too.

I know I still have lots of big nasty ugly Big Hs. And they sometimes

give me grief. But they aren't non-stop grieving me like before.

Have any of your doctors mentioned " H " s? Especially internal ones?

That may be the source of the burn. The tissue down there is really

delicate.

Shortly after joining SillyYaks, I bought a little spiral notebook to

carry in my purse, in this I write all the tips, recipe ingrediants,

etc in and have with me while out and about... It's been a life saver,

except when I leave it at home and have to call the boyfriend to have

him read from it for me, lol.... Brainfog, what brainfog?! ;)

My primary doctor didn't seem concerned when I asked her about this,

but then again, I got the feeling she was learning about CD while

I was in the office. I'm going to ask the specialist that I see

this week about this..... Crossing fingers and hoping for no " The

Big Hs "
