Dr. De Smets incison on my ws only about 8 inches..long starts from the mid

My incision is 32 cm long. Starts just below the small of my back and proceeds

down the side of my thigh to about 10 cm abouve my knee. I had surgery less than

3 weeks ago and both my GP and PT in Vancouver were very impressed with the

incision. almost seemed over impressed but I guess this is their field.

and how long it is..and whether the closing technique is as good as

some of the " almost plastic " closures in some THR surgery?

also..if there is anyone who used DR. Gross who could tell me about

Hi - good questions all. My surgery was three weeks ago in

Belgium. My incision is about 10 inches long (I just measured it)

and toward the back. My husband (a physician) was very

impressed with the suture technique. " A posterior approach was

used to prevent damage to the gluteau medius muscle. A long

incision is needed because of the preservation of the femoral

head " - this quote is from the personal writeup on my surgery

which I brought home. From my understanding, the OS has a

better view and chance to make sure the implant is done well

with a larger incision. He explained some of the potential

problems in placement to my husband post surgery. My hip feels

great and I can already put socks on myself. I got a list of

exercises to continue at home from the PT who visited me in the

hotel. The plane ride was not bad - I stayed 11 days after surgery

and, like Sue, had no problem with the bathroom use. Just stuck

the operated leg out. I only used the raised toilet seat in the

hospital. I second what Sue wrote about the antiseptic issue.

DeSmet's surgeries are done efficiently and quickly to minimize

infection possibilities. About the only negatives for us were

buying a telephone card and using the local access number -

thereby paying twice for a few phone calls - a $50 charge on our

hotel bill. It pays to ask for help! If you have any questions that

I had a bilateral, the incision is at the side of your body (posterolateral

approach), in my case about 8 " (21 cm).

They can do both staples (stitches) and intracutaneous suture. I have had

both, staples left and suture right, and indeed suture heals nicer. If you

want the latter, be sure to request for this explicitly.

A couple of things.

1. Writing in all uppercase is (in email) the same as yelling at someone.

There is an indulgence for folks who went through the US Army where certain

regulations require you to type everything this way. I assumed you were

flaming someone when I first saw the title and ignored the post. It was

only because some of the more sober people on the list responded that I

decided to have a look.

2. I don't have a BHR from de Smet, but at nearly 2 years post-op, the scar

(11 " long) has faded so much that when I try to show it to people, it some

times takes a bit of gyrating to get the light to catch it right. I have

other big surgical scars where this is also the case. A lot of people

don't notice the hip scar when I swim (I wear a pretty skimpy speedo, FWIW,

since I do lots of swimming -- there just isn't any way to hide scars &

such).

3. Some places advertise THRs with extremely small incisions (less than

3 " ). They can do this because they are lobbing of the stem and pulling it

out. You always get a bigger scar with a surf job, since they have to

expose the ball to reshape it. The more they cut, the less chance of things

ripping. The trick (and all the surgeons I've heard of on this list get

kudos for this) is to cut so that no major tissue damage occurs. If they

were to really slice things up, you couldn't take a (really sore) walk the

next day.

This sounds really encouraging, as I am now seriously looking at going to him, I

could get it done in late August and finally get on with my life. Can I ask

where you travelled from, and any advice you have about the travel? I'll be

travelling from British Columbia, Canada. Any other advice gladly accepted.

I visited Dr. Gross, and my 2 incisions are about 6 inches long each; I am

almost 3 weeks post-op, but you can tell how the incision (very skinny line)

is blending w/ my flesh...I would call it a perfect " cut! "
