Guest guest
Pam, I'm right near Medford (here in Oregon) We hit 108 today!!!! Dang! Anyhow, does the heat worsen your symptoms? I am in remission and so far haven't felt hyper. but I have been really cranky, I got a terrible canker sore (haven't had one in years!) and just all around feel yucky. I am just wondering if it's normal heat stress or if I should be worried. I scaled back my exercise, I'm only doing yoga in the mornings, so no cardio, bike rides etc. but I don't know what else I can do. What are you doing? Guest guest
Hi Val, Glad we have several here from the West coast. We can melt together. My aquarium fishies are moving like mad, as their metabolisms speed up with heat, and my cat is doing a fine imitation of a rug. Didn't know he could stay so still for so long and be so FLAT. :-) Oh, and the spell checker disappeared. <sigh> Unfortuatnly, I picked this time to take on extra work. So I am just going and going, but sure not breaking any speed records. I feel like a machine. And my head is a bit empty. The only thing that freaks me once in awhile, is I am sweating like when I was hyper. You know, that solid stream of sweat going down your forehead, with no break, and then the salt gets in your eyes and darn near blinds you. I am sure if I had never been hyper, I would think nothing of it. Yes, I am real cranky. It seems to be coming out as frank honesty... no pussy footing around. I am not using a bad tone of voice, just not pretending to understand. So far, everyone has responded nicely, so I 'think' I am still an accepted member of society. : -) I am drinking a lot of water and not having to pee. And now that this day is over, I am here at the computer as it is too hot to go up and just lay there and sweat. I have been dragging around little protein snacks, and eating a few bites off and on. I think a 'meal' would stop me in my tracks. I am a bit depressed that Ann said this is going to continue. I have not wanted to look at a forecast, as I can not change any of my plans, so ignorance WAS bliss. So my new hope is...the weather man never knows what is going to happen anyway. LOL I bet the people that life in heat all the time must think we are nuts. = :-o Sorry to hear about the cancer sore. I always had them when I was 'off'. both hyper and hypo. It has been great having no sores in my mouth since remission. Though I know if I were to eat any citrus, I would get them back. I had forgotten. I would be crusin' along at close to normal thyroid levels, and then if I got sores in my mouth, I knew it was time for labs. Was that a pattern for you ? Did you eat any citrus ? OK...going to go soak my feet in a bucket of cold water and head to bed. -Pam L -
Guest guest
Hi Pam, Funny how your perception of weather changes. I thought it was a cool day today with a high of ONLY 90 and 94% humidity! I left work and took a walk, it was such a nice change. If it makes you feel better, your forcast is much better than mine for the next week, so we'll suffer together ;-) Off to a cold shower <at 4:30 am, haven't gone to bet yet!>, -Tori

It's my 6 month checkup. Last year the heat really hurt me worse than ever before so maybe it's the heat. Ahh well. Val
Guest guest
I have a question.... I think Elaine or somebody mentioned that the heat can affect us Gravesians. And I have noticed on the hot, humid days that I have symptoms of being hyper, in that I get hungry and shaky very quickly in-between meals, while when it cools down I feel ok. Does anybody know what the physical, or chemical, reason for that is ? Is it because, in the effort to cool down, our bodies transport a greater amount of blood around our bodies, and therefore a greater amount of thyroid hormone ? Or is it just that the additional stress causes the thyroid to work harder ? I have been reading Elaine's book.... which I have to say is fascinating. I am learning all about immune responses and how the thyroid reacts. And now I am thinking about the effects of heat...... Oh the power of education !! Take care, Katy. Re: Pam L. Guest guest
Our thyroid hormone works as a cooler/heater. When we are hyper the cells in our bodies work harder, faster and hotter. We don't ever get a chance to cool down. We are like a car that over heats only when it is hot outside but is fine when the weather is cooler. I've noticed since I was diagnosed that I always feel like I'm doing tons of exercise with really low blood sugar even though I'm not doing either. Re: Pam L. Guest guest
Well I don't believe that I am hyper currently, although I haven't had a blood test for a few weeks now. But your last comment, though, sums up exactly how I feel, which was how I felt when I was hyper... so having gone around in circles, perhaps I AM going hyper again. Well I have an appointment with a new endo this afternoon, this time with Elaine's book in my hot little hand. This will be my third endo, so I am making the rounds. Wish me luck ! Anyways I definitely feel worse when it is hot. I have taken to setting up the hose in the garden so that it works like a shower. I tell you, it is pure bliss standing under the cold water. So there's an idea for anybody that is suffering from the heat. Take care, Katy. RE: Pam L. Heat wave I have a question....
