Adjusting in the real world...

So we just moved to a new state. I don't know anyone and my dh is

working all (I mean ALL) the time. He was told yesterday that he

needed to go to Tucson (about 3.5 hrs away) for 3 days. They got him a

nice 4 star hotel and the baby and I were going to go with him.

But here's the catch... There was no fridge or microwave in the room

so I was really nervous about going because I'm still in Phase 1. I've

lost 6 pounds already and I don't want to do ANYTHING to derail myself

at this point. I considered not even going because of food. How sad.

As it turns out I am not going because there's no one to watch the dog.

Mostly I just wanted to whine, but I thought if anyone had some good

ideas or hints for staying on track in the real world (i'm a stay at

home mom) I'd love to hear what you have to offer!

Hey Pam -- welcome to the world of the real. ;)

FWIW, I am a SAHD and very much a real-worlder myself. When I have to be

away from my kitchen, I tend to operate a bit differently than at home

though.

First and foremost, try to remember -- the SBD is largely a LOW GLYCEMIC

DIET. If you look to foods that are low GI, you'll be in the best position

to succeed.

My favorite solution -- vegetable based meals. Veggies are naturally

low-glycemic. Shoot for getting them steamed though -- these are the

healthiest rendition.

For meat, grilled chicken is usually your best bet. Steak tends to be

marinated and the marinade will likely contain something sweet.

Of course, there's always the old standby of salad. :)

Something else I try to do is hit buffets. They have a larger selection of

low GI foods, especially veggies. I can load up on salad then hit the

veggies and move on to a little meat maybe.

You can also look at the dining out guide for fast food joints. For

example, at Mc's you can get the grilled chicken sandwich and eat

everything but the bun. BTW, the fast food guide is in the files area for

this group.

Something else to note is the overall GI of the meal. If you eat a meal

that has ample fiber and fat, but a small to moderate amount of

sugar/starch, the fiber and fat will keep the sugar/starch from digesting

quickly. Now, I wouldn't shoot for a fatty meal 3 or more times a day mind

you, BUT it can do in a pinch.

Ideally, P1 is not the time to be eating out. Once you're in P2 and your

blood sugar is under control, what you eat becomes far less critical. P1

really shakes your blood sugar levels up -- once they're stable, a meal that

is overall low GI is enough for you to maintain without bringing cravings

back on again.
