Hi,

Here are a few quotes from the Chinese Herbal Medicine materia medica:

" Toxicity: the toxicity of Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (gan cao) " (which is

licorice root to all of us)

" is very low, but if taken for long periods of time, it may cause

hypertension and/or edema. Glycyrrhetinic acid has been reported to cause a

reduction in the activity of the thyroid and a reduction in the basil

metabolic rate. "

also

Mineralcorticoid effect in clinical research: " ....and decrease urine output

and excretion of sodium while increasing excretion of potassium. Serum

calcium was also reduced. "

My husband says there's no particular reason NOT to use licorice for someone

hyperthyroid, as long as you don't overdo it. He also says that it is often

added to herbal formulas as an efficacy-boosting ingredient.

Hope this helps (might just confuse!)

I'd heard of it used to support the adrenals, usually in

hypothyroidism, I hadn't heard of any problems using licorice

with hyperthyroids till posting here.

I assume with lurking herbal reference works, your husband has

some experience in herbs?

I won't be overdoing any herbs, not till the PTU has had a fair

go at sorting my thyroid out. Just having found a local(ish)

source of Lemon Balm I thought I'd grab some whilst I was there.

Having had surgery, relapsed, trouble with Carbimazole, and

having read enough on RAI to make me sceptical of that, I'm kind

of waiting for something to go wrong with the PTU.

I can't say I've given up on conventional medicine, the brief

hyper episode when switching from Carbimazole to PTU reminded me

how bad it hurts without ATDs.

This week entertaining my sister was fun, and I've done a lot

more getting out and about than previously, although it is a

reminder how unfit I've become compared to my unfit relatives

(before I relapsed I was the only one taking daily exercise),

and today I've had a real stinker of a headache, cause unknown.

Everyone else is out on the town having Pizza this evening, I've

just woken up :(

Simon,

Bart is my " resident " acupuncturist/herbalist. And a fine guy to have around

if you're feeling poorly, too. I have been taking Chinese herbal formulas

(compounded by him) consistently as long as I've had GD, in fact resisted

taking Tapazole for the first year after diagnosis and tried to beat it with

just herbs. But, alas, it got the better of me while on a vacation to Italy,

when I couldn't brew up the concoction I needed to stay stable.

Now I take powdered herbs 2x a day, I think there are about 20 different

ones in the very finely tuned formula addressing everything I've got wrong

with my aging bod, from female problems to migraines to the thyroid. Along

with a judicious amount of tapazole, I seem to be doing OK more of the time

than not. Barring, of course, the defective pills I was taking.

As for the drinking thing, by the way, I've always been super-sensitive to

alcohol, haven't noticed any difference at all since taking ATD's. Always

been a cheap (1 glass of wine) date!
