My mother-in-law is the same way. She constantly tells me I don't need to

lose anymore. I just ignore her now and try not to let her get to me. It's going

to be real fun on Christmas day when I have to defend being a vegetarian. I

haven't been to her house since I became one. I feel for ya, Mitch.

>>Mitch, I can't believe how much your MIL sounds like my own mom! The

statement above is exactly what my mother said to me the last time I lot a lot

of

weight--20 years ago. She told me how drawn I looked, and asked if I was sure

I was feeling well and said I was getting too thin. Yeah right----I had

reached the oh-so-thin weight of 160 (on a 5/6 " frame) (hear my sarcasm). I

looked

good, dang it!! But I can hear her saying it even now...and I remember the

effect it had on me. I believe it was one factor (of several) that influenced

me to stop dieting and of course, the weight came back on. Mind you, she's not

the ONLY reason I failed that time.

This time I do not intend to allow anyone's comments to derail me. Not

anyone. And this time, with my faithfulness in journaling and with WW's

Maintenance plan and this support group, I'm expecting to successfully keep the

weight

off. I know you feel the same way and have the same determined mind-set! Go

Mitch! Go Bette!

So, my Mother-in-Law is one of those eat anything you want, load up on

sweets,

never gain a pound types.... (although she does have cholestorol

problems). Since,

I've know her this is, I think, the third time I've had a large weight

loss. Each time she's

been complimentary, but at times, this women has a way of " rubbing me

the wrong

way " .

Take yesterday - she's over at the house. First thing she says: " Mitch.

I really think

you should stop dieting now. You don't look good to me. You look so pale " . I

told her that I never felt better, that I was going to get to my goal,

and that " I wasn't

dieting. I'm going to eat the way I'm eating for the rest of my life " .

She didn't really

understand that last part, but she didn't persue it. Later though she

added, " you know

you really should eat more red meat " (which I try to limit).

" Why? " .

" It's good for

you - it's got lots of protein " .

" So does chicken and fish and other foods " .

" Yes. But

beef has lots of blood that's good for you "

AARGH!!!!!

Mitch

I have NEVER heard someone say beef was good for you because it has

BLOOD in it!!! LOL!!! I've heard the iron bit, but never the blood.

(And my uncle is a cattle rancher, so I get his advice about it all

the time.)

My MIL owns a gym herself and is quite healthy, although she does a

lot of herbal/home remedy stuff, and is always trying to make me

drink minerals--which I don't like. She's always disecting everything

I'm eating--wanting to know what I'm eating and WHY?

MILs aren't the only ones that try to derail our efforts. I find the

closer I get to goal, the more of these people that come out of the

woodwork: " What do you mean you want to lose 15 more pounds, you look

great now, " " But you're getting so skinny, " and my favorite " Well,

you know you'll never be able to maintain that low a weight--you're

not a teenager anymore. " I get it from co-workers, friends, family.

If you hear it too much, you start to want to believe them, but I

just remind myself to keep up the resolve and stay on track.

I became a vegetarian before I got married and I still have problems

with people (MIL) forgetting or not understanding and it's been

almost 16 years. Good Luck Luanne.

So true, April, and the one I've been hearing lately is " Don't lose

too much weight or you will start to look old. When you are older,

you shouldn't get too thin. " I am 53, just got under my weight

watcher goal by 2 pounds, weighing in at 134 now and I think I am

finally looking good. Would even like to lose about 5 or 6 more

pounds. Oh well, I think they mean well. Everyone has their own

opinion. Do you find that the people who say these things tend to

be overweight themselves?
