Guest guest
Rather than advice I guess I have a question to add to this. Who out there is told to routinely put their kids on antibiotics for colds and who waits for a CF cough to develop? Orenstein's book says most CF patients (not babies though) can get through upper respiratory infections like colds without additional treatment - so no need for added antibiotics. I guess you just treat it if after all the cold symptoms are gone a cough is still there or gets worse. Scout has a cold right now too and we have been going back and forth on whether to put her on antibiotics or not. Part of the controversy is what antibiotic to use. Since she cultured Pseudo. last year I wanted to use TOBI, but her Pulm. thinks since she has had two clear cultures we should just use Zithro. She only has an occasional cough that could easily be just part of a normal cold, but I just can't decide whether to start the antibiotic or wait or little longer. And if we do the antibiotic do I push for TOBI or is Zithro. okay? Opinions anyone? Lori Mom to Scout 2 wCF Cold meds ok? Hi! Tyler,6, is in between peds right now.Doesn't have one until June 2, feel like CF nurse is sick of my calling(so many questions, so few answers), but Tyler is sick from a cold he picked up from siblings(Austin woCF,2, and Selena woCF,1), I dont know if I s=hould put him on Pediacare(cold med for " normal " -yucky word-kids), or what to do.I'll increase his VestThAIRapy from 7 min to 9 for 3 sets a day, and he's on Pulmozime for thinning mucus.Should he be on antibiotics right away do ya think?Or should I try these things first? Sorry if I sound ignorant or behind the times; scared and unsure of myself with this Cf thing still.Help?!?! Love from....Patty
Guest guest
I think that is the way it is in DENMARK .perhaps some other countries overseas as well. Their stats say that they stay healthier and live longer with that. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this. LOVE & HUGS< GrandmomBEV. Cold meds ok? Hi! Guest guest
Hi Lori, the theory behind that is, that preventative administration of antibiotics during a cold may stop a possible superinfection. Of course the antibiotic doesn't help against the viruses, but during a viral infection the natural body defense is weaker and those bugs hiding in the lung have a better chance to cause trouble. We give the antibiotics dependend from the severity of a cold, usually Fiona only has a slight sniffle and we don't ask for antibiotics then. But if the cough becomes productive, we begin with a course of abx. So we try to find a compromise between the very agressive danish treatment and a possible undertreatment. If in doubt I would say that too much antibiotics are better than too little. Bye Torsten, dad of Fiona 4wcf e-mail: aberdeen95@...
Guest guest
our drs always said if you use over the counter meds. make sure they do not have cough supressants in them. as we all know cf patients have to cough up mucus, and if you dont cough no mucus comes up. but they never said no over counter meds. we use them all the time. as brandon hasn't been sick for about 4 years. (and yes i am knocking rather pounding on wood) but he does go in for tune-ups. chris mom of 3 brandon 12 yrs w cf On Tue, 24 Apr 2001 23:53:41 +0200, cfparents wrote: > Hi Lori, > > the theory behind that is, that preventative administration of antibiotics > during a cold may stop a possible superinfection. Guest guest
Hi Patty, forgive me if I am late with this, but you need to get your little one in to see a doctor, and June 2nd is absurd! I would suggest finding a new doctor, someone who can definitely see him within a 24hr period, no questions asked. You need to get demanding, because these docs will make you wait until the twelfth of never if you let them. , mom of Shantell 19yr wcf Cold meds ok? Hi!
