Hopefully will see your email, but just in case she doesn't,she had

both hips done at the same time by Dr Kim and loved him. She could tell you

more than I can. I think he has done more resurfs than any other OS in Canada.

I probably would have gone to him but I can't wait another 8 months to a year,

so I am going to Dr De Smet in Belgium this August -yeehah!

Anyone had any experience with Dr. Kim in Ottawa? I just got put on

the waiting list for resurfacing at the beginning of June, and would

appreciate any information.

I had just been told by Sylvie that I was a candidate for resurf

(sent x-rays) and that I would be scheduled for surgery with Dr. Kim

in 6-8 months. This is without even having talked to him. I'm going

to schedule a consulting appt with him in the middle of August. I'd

feel rather nervous not knowing more about him before surgery.

Sharry, did the fact that you couldn't wait 8 months hold any sway

with OHIP? My first choice would be Dr. De Smet but if the $$ become

an issue, I may have to settle for an Ontario surgery with the C+.

Hi Rainer

Really the whole issue for me was the waiting time with any of the Canadian

doctors. My hip is so bad that I'm lucky that Dr De Smet would take me. I saw

a doctor here in BC in Vancouver and he hasn't done many resurfs, and he said

that mine was too complicated for him to do. Dr De Smet has so much experience

that he said he can do it. If I could wait I would have gone to Dr Kim because

he seems to have the most experience of all the Canadian doctors. I don't know

if you've talked to who had a bilateral done by Dr Kim and is thrilled

with the results. I can send you her email address if you want it. I don;t

think you have much to worry about with him at all. I would probably get my

other hip done by him if it needs doing, which it may in a couple of years.

Hi Sharry, Rainer

Thanks for your response to my original question. I would very much

like to have 's email if possible. Seems no-one else has

experience with Dr. Kim in regards to resurfacing.

Rainer, for your information, I had my first appointment with Dr. Kim

at the beginning of June. He seems very professional, competent and

answered all my questions. I did ask him how many resurfacing

operations he has done, and it's not a lot - around 20 - but it's

probably enough to feel comfortable with. He indicated to me that the

standard wait time was a year for orthopeadic surgery with him, but

the operation could be sooner (I expect it depends on number of

resurfacings he's doing -I'm sure he'd like to do a certain number

every month just to stay sharp). As mentioned in other messages, Dr.

Kim uses the Conserve Plus.

I hope my surgery works out well with Dr. Kim because I cancelled a

scheduled THR operation with another surgeon in order to change to

resurfacing. I've been limping around for two years now, and getting

more than a little fed up.

Can you send me your email address, so I can send you 's - I don't

think I feel comfortable giving it out here online, as she may not want that.

My email is sharry_schneider@...

Hi Sharry,

I'd appreciate it if you could send me 's e-mail address.

I'd like to get a little info about Dr. Kim from her.

Im still wondering if OHIP covers any out-of-province surgery if the

wait is too long here, ie. a year wait?

Hi Os,

Thanks for the info re Dr. Kim. 20 resurfs doesn't sound like a lot

when you're comparing him to De Smet and McMinn. I'm sure he can do

the job but...

P.S. I can relate to your 'getting tired of limping'

Hi Rainer

Can you send me your email address, so I can send you 's - don't

want to post it here without her permsission..

I found a website in BC that gave me the scoop on out-of-province and

out-of-country coverage. OHIP must have one too. Basically, going

out-of-province, everything is covered. But out-of-country I would need to

prove that the resurf wasn't available here 'in a timely fashion' and I'd have

to have an OS's written letter to that effect - hahaha...The OS I saw in

Vancouver said I was too tricky a case for him when he saw my xrays, but Dr De

Smet said I was fine as a candidate - that's the diff between a really

experienced surgeon with resurf and one who's not. And there sure aren't many

in Canada. So that's the reason I will be paying for all the costs in Belgium.

Hi Sharry,

My e-mail is alquinn.group@....

As far as having surgery done out-of-country, wouldn't you have the

cost covered if no OS in BC or Canada is willing to work on your

case? I would assume that would be covered under not being done 'in

a timely fashion.'

-The reply to this is that the surgery is " not approved " under BC MSP

-that's why you have to pay $3,000.00 for it. When I asked I was

told that I could go to another doctor for a THR and not have to wait

2 years - there was no answer to my question as to why I should go to

a doctor I didn't want for a surgery I didn't want.

I maintain that Canada's healthcare system is universally inaccessible

unless you are in a life and death situation - and then you get

fabulous care.

So true, especially here in beautiful B.C., what? (detect touch of

irony?).

Also, I couldn't get an OS here with enough experience willing to tackle my

difficult hip, they've told me that they'll only recommend a THR, but Dr De

Smet is more than willing to do a resurf. So I can't get approval from an OS

here to give me anything in writing to approve something they won't touch.

Hear the sound of teeth gnashing....
