Guest guest
Tori, The Prednisone was most likely prescribed for your eyes. They often use steroids to treat the eye disease. If I remember correctly, you did mention protrusion and lid lag? Holly Re: Update on my meds Thanks, Pam. I just took my first dose of PTU & beta-blocker. I need the beta-blocker to bring my heart rate down, I'm most afraid about it. I think you're right about the prednisone. I was reading the package insert and the possible side effects sounded like all the hyper symptoms. I wouldn't be able to tell if it I were having an adverse reaction to it or going very hyper. I'm going to hold off on it until I talk to my Dr. Little from Bastyr. It kinda shocked me that it was prescribed. I think she looked over my medical history and decided because in our 5 minute visit we didn't discuss anything it would be used to treat. Peace, Tori
Guest guest
Hi Holly, Yes, I have both protrusion and lid lag. I also have nerve damage in one as well as muscle spasms in the other. The protrusion is really irritating now that I have to wear my glasses instead of contacts--my lashes hit the lenses when I blink (short, stubby lashes with no mascara too). Should I take the prednisone? I just started PTU and beta-blockers and don't want to shock my system with the sudden influx of drugs. Guest guest
Hi Tori, >>>Should I take the prednisone? I just started PTU and beta-blockers and >>>don't want to shock my system with the sudden influx of drugs.<<< If this was not prescribed by an ophthalmologist who is schooled in treating our eye disease, I would not add this to your pill regimen right now. Make and appointment with an ophtho and see what he/she says first. I get real nervous when endo's start delving into our eyes...hard enough to get them to treat our thyroids right, I would hate to see what they could do to our eyes. Just my opinion, Jody _________________________________________________________________ Join the world’s largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
Hi Jody, Thank you for your opinion. I don't have much confidence in this particular endo, so I'd rather not put too much stock in her recommendations. How can I find an ophthalmologist who is familiar with treating GED? Guest guest
Hi Tori, Call around from names in the yellow pages under ophthalmologist. You do NOT want anyone lesser even looking at your eyes. My former optomitrist kept telling me he could recognize graves eye disease and if he saw any signs of it he would recommend someone who treats it. He never recognized it, actually told me I had no signs of it, even after telling him about light sensitivity, double and blurred vision etc. My endo told me 2 weeks later to get into the ophtho she recommended. So much for trusting him again. When you call around for an appointment, ask them if this doctor can treat eye disease, if so, how long has he been doing it, and how many graves eye disease patients he sees. If it is 20 or 30 of them, chances are better that he knows what he is doing. If you can't get into one before you head back to WA, see if your hubby or someone can help you track one down at home, and get an appointment scheduled for as soon as you are home. Good luck! Guest guest
I can't really answer that. I do know that even though I don't have the eye disease at this point, at least not any obvious signs, that's the thing that scares me most about this disease. I'd probably take anything if they thought it would help with the protrusion. I wonder if there are any studies that show the effectiveness of steroid treatment in TED? If it keeps your eyes from being permanently damaged from the pressure, then it might be worth the side effects. Holly Re: Update on my meds Hi Holly, Yes, I have both protrusion and lid lag.
