Hi Cyndi, Just curious, where did you get your Omacor? I heard it was hard to

get in the US. I'm on it also (had to switch from Coromega to Omacor due to a

research study with CellCept). Generally I'm tolerating it fine. Was just

curious if (and where) you were getting it from... Are you in the US? Thanks

Bonnie

Bonnie,

I am in Austin, Texas. Surprisingly I sent an email to Dr. Donadio,

the lead researcher on IGA at the Mayo.. He answered me within 30 minutes

of me sending him the email!

He happened to have Omacor left from the study and sent it to me. All I

paid was the shipping.

From what I understand, you can bring up to a 90 day supply of drugs into

the US from other countries if they are for your own use and aren't on the

banned list. Omacor was awaiting FDA approval. I haven't checked the

status lately.

I felt like I smelled like fish, not just burping. I felt like when I would

sweat it was there. Any change in my lab work and I will live with smelling

like a fish! :-)

Cyndi, Way too funny. That's where I go (Mayo), and I was told as far as they

knew, they were the only ones that had it except Dallas Texas who is also

conducting the same study down there. I was told the same thing, Still pending

FDA, Roche Pharmaceuticals is trying desperately to get it to the US from

Europe. They are the same " makers " of CellCept. Now your Email makes sense!

Thanks! Bonnie

I am very resourceful. When I was first diagnosed I left no stone unturned.

I actually spoke with the lead chemist for the company that makes Omacor.

It's was a little disconcerting that they are a petrochemical manufacturer.

To any who might know,

In what way is Omacor different than fish oil capsules? Reading the info I could

find online

gave me few answers other than a run down of some uses, tolerance levels, and

ingredients.

thanks,

sarah

It's not really different. As I've written on www.igan.ca<http://www.igan.ca/> ,

it's the concentration of EPA and DHA acids that counts. When they do a clinical

trial, they have to get a standardized drug (or in this case, fish oil) from

some supplier somewhere. In the first Donadio fish oil trials, they used MaxEPA.

In the later one, Omacor. It's like taking one ACE inhibitor over another one.

For example, most of the kidney disease ACE inhibitor trials in the early to

mid-90's used enalapril. Later on, ramipril became available, and it's

manufacturer was very aggressive in getting it used in clinical trials, so many

of the later trials used ramipril instead. It's mostly a matter of marketing. If

say Omacor or ramipril manage to be the one used because the manufacturer

provides it free of charge or at low cost (in fact, these manufacturers usually

fund the whole trial), there are lots of profits to be made because they hope

that doctor will prescribe or recommend it over the others.

Hi , regarding Omacor. I did read Pierre's post and certainly agree he is

probably quite " right on the nose " , but for the sake of giving you another

perspective I asked this question to my research coordinator at Mayo this past

week, and she believed the Omacor was " more purified " (less side effects, more

potent in 4 capsules/day, than the other versions that you have to take many

pills to obtain the same amount of DHA and EPA) She mentioned some people just

are so tired of taking so many pills that to reduce the number of pills and be

consistent with the right dosing of both DHA & EPA was quite important. Mayo

has been quite proactive in supporting purified fish oil, and the guru for one

of the big research studies (Donadio) was from Mayo. (See files under sister

site to this site, hightlightted below) And yes as Pierre mentioned sometimes

they do get " kick backs " for supporting the research using " their prescibed

medication " even if it is not the " study drug " being

evaluated. For instance the study I'm now in at Mayo is for CellCept, and

right on the consent they mention that they do receive financial monies to

conduct the research. They also require Omacor as the only fish oil that we can

take. Using the same fish oil decreases the amount of possible variability in

their results, so they can say the results obtained are only related to the

study drug, CellCept. So I know they receive financial incentives for the

CellCept, but also perhaps for the Omacor, I'm not sure though. Hope that makes

sense. Bonnie
