When will I get it through my thick skull?

When will I learn " every label every time " ?

I keep forgetting!

So far I've not truly injured myself, but I **HATE** it when I'm

half-way through consuming something and then suddenly remember " Oh

wait. Who read the ingredients list for this? "

I think everyone does it from time to time - it takes a long time for an action

to become a

habit. The other day, I came in from a run with my running group and there were

fig

newtons out for us. I grabbed one and popped it in my mouth. As I was reaching

for a

second one, I looked at my sister and said, " Um, what am I doing? " We then both

thought,

OOPS! It was still more of a habit for me to grab the provided snack then to

think about it.

Granted I had only been back GF for a few weeks, but still, you would think I

wouldn't just

totally blank out on something like that. Luckily I don't get very bad

reactions, it is more

of a builds up over time and repeated exposure.

Have you thought about using a labeling system? Someone (Melonie,

perhaps?) posted that they print up labels for the GF items they buy,

and label each item before it goes in the cupboard. Then later they

just look for the labels and don't have to reach for the safe food

lists or read the ingredients every time.

Me, I just take the Sharpie marker and write NOT SAFE on the very few

gluten items we have. Not elegant, but it works.

As awful as this sounds, I'm glad to hear it does happen to someone

else! My son is 1 month GF & last Sunday I let him eat a cheese dip

that I didn't make & he reacted horribly! I felt like a rotten mom!

We were out to eat & I even had the waitress bring a can of pudding

from the kitchen for me to read & I never ever gave thought to the

cheese sauce.

Just print up some labels (I print them by the HUNDREDS), or use a

sharpie marker. You can choose to label the GF or non-GF foods...

just be consistent. I have about 5 sheets of labels taped to the

inside door of our kitchen pantry, and then as I put groceries away,

I stick one of those labels on everything that is GF. (also works

great b/c then anything I send from home to the pre-school is

already clearly labeled...) It doesn't take that much extra time.

(I read labels in the grocery store, and also read them at home).
