After Sept. 9th I will replace Cytoxin with Imuran (azathioprine) I

haven't noticed anyone else in the group taking this med. It is

suppose to be an immune suppressant to be taken pre-diaylysis

and transplant. Has anyone in the group taken and what side

effects occured. I am anxious to know. Thanks Billie

on the Cyoxan-I started June 8th and will be off Sept.

9th so maybe I can handle it until then. The guy on

diaylisis was he on Cytoxin for a long time to " kill "

his kidneys? Billie

Hi Billie, I am currently on 50 mg prednisone daily and 150 mg cytoxan, 15mg

lisinopril, 1 prevacid, 6 fish oils, a daily vitamin an so on and so on.

Started my first week of medication at 80mg prednisone and 200 mg cytoxan.

Right

now my last CCR was 73 which is still good and my last creatine was 1.5. It

started a couple months ago at 1.6 and then went up to 2.0 so I don't know if

it was just a one time drop this last time but I hope not. I think my doctor

is being aggressive with my case because my first signs of anything IGA related

was my first high BP in May of this year. I gave blood in January and April

and my BP's were fine although my cholesterol was a little higher in April.

Between June and July my creatine went from 1.6 to 2.0 and my BUN from 26 to

33. My neph thinks that the cytoxan was needed to stop the kidney function

decline and that the prednisone and Imuran after will have a positive effect on

preserving it. My BP is under control and running anywhere from 105 to 120 over

65 to 75. If I can just get my protein under control I will feel a lot

better about the situation(currently 3.6g 24hr).

Where are your levels at and is your doctor basing your meds on the study

posted on the files section of this site???

Thanks Rita, yeah I've noticed from your postings that your levels are

similar to mine. I don't know that the cytoxan really helps with the protein???

I

think it's to halt the IGA attacking the glomular function, but I'm not sure.

I think the prednisone, Imuran(later on), and the ACE help the protein more.

Congrats on getting your protein down. Are you still on prednisone or

cellcept?? How often do you get tested now??

It's an older immunosuppressant, not used much any more. My son took it

in 1999. It can cause gastric side effects and also causes birth

defects.

Hi Mike,

Your labs look quite a bit like mine. When first diagnosed my creatinine was

1.7 and protein was 5+. I was then put on prednisone, ace inhibitor - well you

name it! My labs continued to get worse, so my neph introduced CellCept and

started weaning me off the prednisone. I've finally gotten my protein down to

1300 and my creatinine is at 1.0. I hope the cytoxin works for you to get that

protein down. Rita

Wow Billie, that is awesome that your protein came down from 6 grams to 1/2

gram in just a month!!!! The combination seemed to work really well for you

and hopefully should preserve the rest of your kidney function. I hope that

when I go in my has even started to come down half of that. Let me know how the

change to Imuran goes. Good luck, keep in touch.

Billie, I asked my doctor that exact question. He said that the studies he

was looking at including the switch from Cytoxan to Imuran. I originally asked

him because I heard from people on this group that Imuran was an older drug

and not often prescribed and could potentially lead to bladder issues. He said

he felt the Imuran was a " safe and well tested drug " , and didn't feel like

there would be any complications. One of the studies I have seen combining

prednisone and Imuran is posted in the files section from August 5th if you

would

like to read it.
