Guest guest
My Perinatologist told me it takes 300 calories to sustain a Fetus. I got pregnant (unexpectedly) at 7 weeks pst-op, my caloric intake was way lower than it should have been. Anyways........I am sending Babydust your way!!! Guest guest
Hi Sharon, The 'ideal' caloric intake is your daily caloric needs + 300 more for the baby.. Most women need somewhere between 1800 and 2200 calories per day.. I know.. seems like a TON for us post ops!!! Do a search for 'caloric needs' and you will find a ton of calculators on the net. If you are still quite a while away from ideal weight, you can certainly get away with less, but if you're close to ideal, I'd try to get as close as you can.. I'd ask your doc (OB/GYN) how much weight gain he thinks would be appropriate for you and go from there. GOOD LUCK!! lulamink@... Why Wait? Guest guest
I don't know about " average " but my intake is around 1800 calories now per day after being down around 900 when I conceived. Baby is growing right on target and I'm 35 weeks along now. It took a long while to get to this point though. Somewhere during the second trimester I started getting hungry, which hadn't happened since surgery. The hunger isn't like a hunger pang like pre-surgery, it is more like a feeling of weakness that only goes away if I eat. Doctor says it is low blood sugar telling my body to go eat something. If I ignored this feeling it got worse and sometimes I'd start to get dizzy, shake, and sweat so I rarely ignore the feeling anymore. So I gradually started eating more and more and have been at about 1800 calories for about the last 3-5 weeks. I'm hoping that this feeling will go away to an extent after the baby is born so that I can get down to my goal weight. However, I plan on breastfeeding so until I'm done with that I might be stuck with it to meet the needs of the baby. Normal Calorie Intake During Pregnancy? Hi everyone, I was needing to know how many calories a day is normal after you become pregnant. With my children I had before WLS I was large and never thought about or knew about calorie intake. I am TTC and I was wanting a heads up on what type of calorie count I need to have a successful pregnancy. My current calorie intake for a average day is around 800-1000.I think this is low , so any info would be great. I'm Ovulating , so I need BabyDust(asap)!! Thank You. Sharon_H. TTC 115lbs. WLS215lbs (DOT)
Guest guest
Did any of your doctors recommend drinking Ensure (or something similar) during your pregnancy to increase your calorie intake? I was just wondering, if that is something I should try if I don't start gaining anything in the next couple months. I am about 14/15 weeks along and I haven't even gained one pound. My clothes are all tight in the waist now, so I know my stomach is starting to get bigger, so the baby is probably just taking all the calories instead of me. Just wondering what you all thought about supplements like Ensure. I saw there is also have Ensure now with added protein too. I was thinking about trying that one. Guest guest
When I was pregnant my Perinatologist was obsessed with me getting this ideal amount of calories in a day. It wasn't until he read the OR report from my RNY that he understood, it was virtually impossible for me to get in all of the calories he wanted me to have. I was extremely weak from lack of nutrients in my pregnancy, but the important thing was, my son grew at a normal rate thruought my pregnancy, and was born healthy! I am fine now, and feel just great! Good luck to all!
Guest guest
Does anyone know offhand how many grams of sugar Ensure has? I thought it only had 12 or 15 grams, but then again I could be thinking of something else. I was checking out a few different options in the isle that day. Guest guest
Hi Jeanette, The problem with Ensure is that it full of sugar....not good for us post-ops. ;o) Unfortunately, many OBs are really unaware of just how to handle post-op OB patients. If you are looking to increase your protein via supplements, there are many out there that don't have all the added sugar that Ensure does. Vitalady.com is a good source of information. If we wait to conceive until our weight is stabilized, then in theory, we only need to add 300 calories for the baby. I think what happens is that those of us (me too) that conceive prior to getting to goal, often continue to lose weight. Nothing like a preggo patient losing weight to freak out the doctor! LOL!!! So long as the baby is growing, you're getting all your supplements in, and your labs look good...you're most likely doing just fine. in CA _____ Jordan's WAHMommy michelle@... Guest guest
I was on Ensure Lite, but it didn't work with my morning sickness either. For a while I tried SF Carnation Instant Breakfast with Skim milk. Again, because of the morning sickness that only worked sometime. It can't hurt to try! Good Luck!! D. Guest guest
Hi Jeanette, I just checked out the nutritional info at ensure.com For the high protein version, you get whopping 19 grams of sugar (total of 31 carbs) and only 12 grams of protein. Depending on what WLS a person has had, dumping can occur with as little as 10 or so grams of sugar. IMHO, if adding protein is your goal, there are much better alternatives out there...more protein and less empty sugar calories. And, from what I remember, isn't Ensure kinda pricey money-wise, too? in CA _____ Jordan's WAHMommy michelle@... Re: Normal Calorie Intake During Pregnancy? Guest guest
I really like cardio-link soy protein..I can take it with water and it doesnt taste so bad, I can stir it and it isnt clumpy, and it has 25 grams of protein for each serving....so that is my choice, oh yes, it also has only a couple of carbs...and very little sugar, I am gestational diabetic, and cant have the sugars....good luck in finding something that is right for you Robin RNY 2/27/2002 E.D.D 7/20/2003 5 precious children to light the way
