People's reaction to the surgery vary greatly. I (and some others) didn't

need pain meds of any sort post-op since it hurt less than the OA.

Fortunately, once healing sets in, it should abate fairly quickly -- every

few days I noticed it was tangibly better than before. If swelling seems to

persists, the area seems unusually hot or you are running a fever, this

could be a sign of infection. In that case, ask your osteopath.

Short answer: The swelling is unlikely to have anything to do with your leg

length difference.

Long answer: If you had bone on bone before the operation, all the

cartilage was missing. Resurfacing puts it all back the way it was, so

actually your leg should be more or less its normal length. The implants

are short, so unlike a THR, where there is a long stem and therefore a lot

of variation, resurfs pretty much all come out the same way for length.

Most people (including me) report as you do, that the leg seems longer.

With a lot of people, they were also pretty twisted up pre-op and being

able to stand up straight makes it just seem like you grew even more.

Finally, if you had some dysplasia or deformity, it is possible the leg was

even shorter in its normal state. I had this, and if that is the case, your

pelvis is a bit out of whack, which could lead to some back trouble in the

next couple of months. All of these issues have resolved themselves nicely,

by the way. When in doubt, ask your osteopath.

It's hard to say if the discrepancy will resolve. It depends on the cause.

Have your Dr make measurements on the x-ray ... he can then advise you. I have

a 1.2 cm discrepancy post-op. To resolve any discomfort I use a heel lift.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your pain.

I had 2 resurfacings spaced 6 months apart in 2000 (BHR Treacy

Birmingham, U.K.). I had some bruising and swelling both times but

not much pain - guess you were unlucky; it can happen. Hope it

resolves soon.

My operated leg felt slightly longer the first time, but did settle

slightly as it bedded in. I say " felt " because my physio said it was

because the leg and hip area were much " straighter " than before the

op. After two or three months I didn't really notice the difference

anymore, but I was only walking properly on one (the operated!) leg.

After the second operation, I had the same feeling, but again after

two to three months it was obvious that both legs were the same

length, and probably no longer than before, although because of now

being totally " straight " instead of cramped around the hip area, I

felt about an inch taller!

The re-surfacing technique generally leads to minimal leg length

differences and much less than can occur in a total hip replacement.

Good luck with your further recovery. Maybe a chat to your surgeon or

physio will help you further with this concern.

I'm also sorry to hear about your pain. I had my hip done 3/13/03

and the only real pain I had was the first time I got out of bed the

day after surgery and most of that was from that crazy tape they use

to cover the incision. I don't have any leg length problems. When

are you due for your next check-up? If I were you I would contact my

OS. Good luck.

I'm also soryy to hear about your pain. I had my right hip done

3/13/03 and the only real pain I had was getting out of bed the day

after surgery and most of that was from that crazy tape they use on

the incision. I have no leg length discrepancies. When are you due

for your next check-up? If this pain persists you should contact

your OA. Good luck

Wow. Sorry bout that pain.

R U sure the difference in leg length is an inch? Seems big.

May I ask who did the resurface? ...Curious.

Following my L hip surgery, i had a leg length difference...under an

inch. Then i had the R one done and i'm " good to go " . Luckily i had

no real pain...didn't take any pain meds.

I think you'll be fine....great....fantastic...!!
