Guest guest
Hello, I really think I could use some tips for dealing with constipation. I am already having plenty of weetabix, kiwi fruit, and yoghurt, but it is not helping. This constipation seems to be a side effect of my AC chemo because normally I do not have this problem, but right now it is making me really uncomfortable! Thank you, Iza in land
Guest guest
Iza, Have you tried anything like Metamucil or the stool softners they have in the stores? How about a mild laxative? Of course check with you onc before tanking any of the above. Guest guest
Iza, Do you take Sennekot-S? It is an over the counter pill you can take, that is recommended for those on AC. Take 1-2 pills at night. If nothing is 'happening' in the morning, take it again in the daytime. It helped me! My nurse recommended it for the first 1-3 days after chemo, because the chemo & anti-nausea medication cause constipation. - Izaskun Fuentes Milani wrote on 2/13/2006, 11:06 AM: Hello, I really think I could use some tips for dealing with constipation. Guest guest
Iza I have the same problem. They keep telling me to take Sennakot. But I have relieved it by eating lots and lots of bread and cereal with whole seeds in them. One good one I have found is Nature's Path cereal, and local fresh and expensive Bella Terra bread baked with lots of seeds. Guest guest
Iza: My doc recommended OTC - Dulcolax. The anti nausea meds wreaked havoc on my gastro system. Ordinarily, Metamucil would work but it didn't in this case. The Dulcolax gave me diarrhea for a day, but then I was okay after that. http://www.dulcolax.com/com/splashscreen.jsp Jane relief for constipation? Guest guest
On the rare occasions, I have constipation, I eat stewed prunes. I take about 12, put them in a bowl with a little water and nuke them for about a minute. Don't eat them too fast. I do this the night before and usually have " results " sometime the next day. Have also heard that warmed prune juice does the trick. Ruth > > Hello, > > I really think I could use some tips for dealing with constipation. Guest guest
I had constipation problems prior to AC chemo the first time The second chemo I started taking senacot prior to chemo. One tablet at night 2 days prior to chemo and 2 tablets the next 2 nights until I got relief. My plan was to continue with 2 tablets and possibly adding a additional one till successful. I was told that the IV steroids that are given with the antinausia meds to help them work are very constipating. M Re: relief for constipation? Guest guest
To me it was helping to drink lots of water, and eat nuts (walnuts, etc) on a regular base. I kept walking and exercising as much as I could. Lu Izaskun Fuentes Milani wrote: Hello,I really think I could use some tips for dealing with constipation. Guest guest
I had painful constipation after chemo. My chemo nurse said to start taking the laxatives before the chemo, to get things moving really well, so the chemo would find it harder to stop! I don't know what's available in the US, but I have a bottle of syrupy liquid called Lactulose - pleasant to take, and it works for me. There's lots of information about it at http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic2/lactulose.htm I also get little capsules called Dioctyl ( see http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100000798.html ) which help to soften the result - much more comfortable. Guest guest
Margery Can you tell us what kind of chemo and how long you will be taking it. Chemo doesn't make me sleepy but the anti-nausea medicine does. So I nap every day. I believe we all deserve that at least. Guest guest
Hi, Janet - I started off last June with Caelyx (liposomal doxorubicin) and cyclophosphamide. That was for three months (4 doses, at 3-week intervals). Then I had Taxol (paclitaxel)for three months (again, 4 doses at 3-week intervals). And now I'm on Navelbine (vinorelbine) which is on a 4-week schedule - day 1 and day 8, then the rest of the 4 weeks off. I'm supposed to be on Navelbine until this June. We're hoping to shrink the tumour until it's small enough for a lumpectomy. It's still about 7 cms. I have large breasts, so it doesn't show at all. They have all made me sleepy - starting about 3 days after the dose and lasting ... well, with the first 6 months it lasted about 4 or 5 days - I was so dozy I stayed in bed most of the time. With the Navelbine, it's not so bad, and doesn't last so long. I don't even need to be asleep - just to be lying down with my cheek on the pillow and my eyes shut. In between times I can get stuff done, but I run out of energy much sooner than I expect to. ATB, Margery. > Margery > > Can you tell us what kind of chemo and how long > you will be taking it.
