Guest guest
dear all: doug and kathy stanley from pittsburgh here. we have a little problem we need some help with. patrick (11 mo.s w/cf) has had a severe cough for the last three days. before this his baseline cough was nil. on saturday he started coughing. he had just finished a course (2 weeks) of pediazole which was prescribed because he was getting a cloggy nose with green goo coming out. his last dose was on saturday. so for 3 days he has had this wet cough. nothing being projected with the cough but now on monday he sounds wheezy. he has no fever, no vomiting, is still a " wild child " and playing. we talked to the cf docs at childrens and they put him back on pediazol again. what do you all think. it doesn't seem like pediazol is the answer to us. if you have any experiences that might help us feel free to express it. thanks in advance, doug and kathy stanley
Guest guest
I am surprised they didn't put him on something else when the pediazole didn't do the trick. Who is your dr. at Pitt? You should know that if you specificly, firmly ask for an antibiotic by name when you call in, they will most likely give you what you want (if whatever your child is currently culturing is susceptable to it.) What does your child's throat cultures show from your most recent clinic visit? We like Zithromax as an oral antibiotic. In fact, Levi is on it now and doing much better than just a few days ago. I have never been turned down for a prescription for Zithromax when I have called into Pittsburgh Children's. They say they see good results with it, and I know we do. Do you see Dr. Orenstein? ~ mommy of 3, 1 wcf what do you all think. it doesn't seem > like pediazol is the answer to us. if you have any experiences that > might help us feel free to express it. > > thanks in advance, > > doug and kathy stanley
Guest guest
Doug and Kathy, just wanted to send a short note and let you know both of my girls stay very active even when very sick. Unfortunately this is sometimes the nature of the beast which makes it difficult to convince docs to do something. my girls also never run fevers, oddly enough. I usually start tracking their respirations both awake and asleep and if these are elevated the docs usually respond pretty quickly. We occasionally get relief with augmentum (antibiotic) and inhaled tobi, but last resort I opt for the clean out so we don't damage the lungs. good luck. Guest guest
It sounds like he may be getting bronchiolitis. I would take him into a Dr. and have them listen to his lungs. If it is bronchiolitis they may put him on liquid steroids for a few days, albuterol and perhaps another antibiotic. (I am not familiar with pediazol, I assume it is an antibiotic?) When they are little like that it is much easier for the bronchioles to get obstructed. It usually follows an upper respiratory problem that last quite a few days. It may not even be a problem caused by " CF " but just him being small - either way though it is important to treat it as quickly as possible so it doesn't cause damage. Guest guest
Hi, Doug and Kathy, welcome to the list! Sorry to hear about 's (is that another Irish addition to our list?) problems. Just recently our clinic has started to do throat AND nose cultures on a regular basis to find out, whether the patients culture different bugs in their lung/throat and in the sinuses. I hope your docs have checked the reason for the green goo before they shoot into the dark with any meds. I haven't heard of pediazole before, so don't know what it is supposed to do. Our daughter produces that green goo for quite a while now, but her latest cultures came back clear. Colored secretions have not necessarily to be related to bacteria. Here is hoping for a speedy recovery. Bye Torsten, dad of Fiona 4wcf e-mail: aberdeen95@...
Guest guest
Yes, Torsten is absolutely correct. Shantell cultured two different Pseudomonas bacterias, one in her nose and one in her lungs and they were resistant to different medications. I'd recommend cultures on both on a regular basis also. Shantell was on Pediazole when she was a small child a lot. It can cause some stomach upset (white, thick fluid), but basically it worked for awhile. But kids and bacteria are different, and I feel if it hasn't worked in two weeks, then it probably won't and you should switch (my own opinion). I don't take the chance. Amoxicillin is good at that age, too. She eventually built up a resistance to both (years), and we just went on to others (there's lots of oral antibiotics). Thanks, , mom of Shantell 19yr wcf
Guest guest
Doug, I'm so sorry to hear that your kid is having a rough time. That's something that it's so soon after a good clinic visit, too. Levi always, ALWAYS gets sick 7 to 10 days after a clinic visit. Of course, he scoots around on the floor in the exam room and touches the trash cans every chance he gets... Hope your little one recovers quickly! ~
Guest guest
, At our clinic they regularly do broncoscopys to check for pseudo. if the child gets a chunky cough. Guest guest
Just read something about bronchiolitis. If anyone has or suspects it I'd also go to clinic. Eilish's cousin had it for 6 months, and in the mean time kept visiting us as they thought she just had hayfever. Eilish has never been 100% since then. They admit kids to hsp. here with broncholitis. need your help please. > > dear all: doug and kathy stanley from pittsburgh here. we have a > little problem we need some help with. patrick (11 mo.s w/cf) has > had a severe cough for the last three days. before this his baseline > cough was nil. on saturday he started coughing. he had just > finished a course (2 weeks) of pediazole which was prescribed because > he was getting a cloggy nose with green goo coming out. his last > dose was on saturday. so for 3 days he has had this wet cough. > nothing being projected with the cough but now on monday he sounds > wheezy. he has no fever, no vomiting, is still a " wild child " and > playing. we talked to the cf docs at childrens and they put him > back on pediazol again. what do you all think. it doesn't seem > like pediazol is the answer to us. if you have any experiences that > might help us feel free to express it. > > thanks in advance, > > doug and kathy stanley > > > > > > PLEASE do not post religious emails to the list. > > > ------------------------------------------- > > > The opinions and information exchanged on this list should > IN NO WAY > be construed as medical advice. > > PLEASE CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE CHANGING ANY MEDICATIONS OR TREATMENTS. > > -------------------------------------------------- > > >
