Edith,

Congrats on your progress! I do remember becoming tired and somewhat

sore at 4-5 months when I was on my feet for too long. It really is

actually early in recovery. At 6 months I got the question, " Does it

feel like your own hip? " from a holier than thou doubter. I answered

honestly that, " No, it still feels like a replacement, but a darn

good one! " At almost one year I can say that the right definitely

feels like my own. The left still has some muscle work to do and it's

coming along just fine.

You'll get there!!!! Enjoy your new found bending!!!!

Hi Trudy,

Thank you and yes I am very pleased too........... and you bring up

something that I am starting to realise about it all........... there seems

to be various stages ones goes through with realisation of what the hip is

doing........... The first few months seemed to have been about just getting

some normalacy going........ stretching, exercising, and regaining strength

with various degrees of dogged determination, achieving results

etc............

I am starting now to realise that this next few months may be more about

understanding the nature of the beast......... Knowing its subtle messages

of making its presence felt in my body if the muscles tire and me

recognizing these and having action plans, dealing with the fear stuff of

" WHAT IF " , 'Does this pain mean it has failed etc??'...........(and I

suspect more of us do a bit more panic state then we let

on.....smile).........

And then the stage you and others are now at where it looks like one can

forget for days on end that one even have a prothesis............

Any comments?

Edith

Edith,

....only that I'm not to the point yet where I forget for days on end

that I have replacements. I actually remember it more as I marvel on

a regular basis just all that I can do and how good it is to

feel " normal " ; physically not mentally. :0) I think once I get the

muscles where I want them to be it will become more " me " . Because

the psoas is so easily inflamed that may take awhile. I can do

weight of about 20-30 pounds on the right when I exercise the psoas

and only 0-5 pounds on the left. I'm aiming to get it up to the 70-

90 pound range for both. With that goal in mind remember that I've

been working for almost a year. There a slew of athletes out there

who will have a much shorter time frame. I'm no athlete!

You do bring up a good and probably secret point about panicking over

the thought of failure. I'd bet anyone who says they never do is not

being altogether honest! That calms down as one goes on and the

little aches and pains become less.

Laurie,

I am so glad you are out of the immobilizer and into the sling. (I am sure you are too! ) :-) It must be a great feeling to be able to drive again. Here is to more progress in your recovery.

Hi AllI reached a milestone in my recovery. I have moved from the immobilizer to asling. I can now do arm swings 6 times a day and wear the sling on top of myclothes. I can also drive as long as I have someone to fasten my seatbelt. Iwill start PT in 2 weeks.laurie

I am being very careful, especially since we keep getting snow - 1 inch here and 2 inches there.

I spent a couple of hours watching TV this evening with the sling off and my arm on a pillow. It felt so good not having something hanging on my neck.

Laurie,

Boy do I know that feeling. About 5 years ago I broke my shoulder in 3 places. (long story). I used to forbid ANYONE from walking past my chair just so I could have some time out of the immobilizer and later the sling with my arm on the pillow.....of course it was the middle of the summer and we were in the midst of a heat wave...there was NO getting comfortable in that thing! Enjoy the freedom when you can!
