Guest guest
Hi Lois! Here's my soapbox stand on metal ions: It seems that one person opined that there might be a problem with elevated levels of metal ions - and the whole " anti-resurf " community jumped on the bandwagon. And yes - there *should* be some sort of data from the BHR folks if there was a correlation since it wears about the same as the 2 devices in the US. So far, there has been nothing definitive published. I keep an eye out for new info - but I sure don't lose any sleep over it. The absolute, ONLY consideration I give to the possible elevated metal levels in my body is the fact that I now wear gloves when soldering stained glass (lead being a far bigger scare than cobalt or chromium). Perhaps if you worked in a foundry for years, you might want to ponder the ion issue a bit more..... And even if someone actually produces hard data showing a problem with metal ions - I'm STILL not going to fret. If I didn't have this wonderful hip, I'd be perfectly miserable. At the risk of being " dark " - I'd rather die young, happy, and active than live a long time in a wheelchair But I have a strong suspicion that my new, energetic lifestyle is actually going to increase my lifespan?! And in the meantime, I'm loving every second of my reborn life!!! Best wishes! Deb C+ 5-2-02 > Hi all. First of all, thanks to all who answered me about my east > coast surgeon question. First of all, thanks to all who answered me about my east coast surgeon question. I really do want the resurf. However, the possibility of cancer from metal ions down the road scares the bejeebers out of me. I've lost far too many people of all ages in my family to that disease, and always take as much care as I can to avoid risky behavior. Even tho there's nothing to truly indicate a problem down the road, it makes my decision harder. My question is this: Since the Brits/Belgians etc have been doing this for so many years, can't the data on their devices be applicable to what we can expect? Is there something about their devices that is that different from ours? (other than manufacturer, obviously). As so many others have stated, thank you all so much. The info I've gathered on this board has been invaluable. I feel positively ancient, feeble, sore, afraid and angry, and being a member of this board gives me solace that I'm not alone, and comfort that I still have some life coming up if I can only MAKE THIS DAMN DECISION!!! Another question: - did everyone have to wear TED's? Thanks again Lois (the other)
Guest guest
Dr. DeSmet has his patient wear TEDS. I had a bilateral and was told to wear mine 24 hr a day for the first three weeks, and then at night time for the fourth week. Also, Metal Ions have been a topic here for a long time. If you have the time, search this site for " Metal Ions " or " Ions " ,...etc and you'll have your answers. Michigandar Mike Bilateral, Dr. DeSmet, April 1, 2003 > Hi all.
