I’d say trail mix is just whatever

you love in bite size (non-perishable) pieces thrown in a bag! Any dried fruit

from raisins to mangoes, nuts, seeds (sunflower, pumpkin), chocolate chips or

carob chips or m & m’s…Sure you could throw in crackers or cereal

pieces. Big flakes of coconut. I’ll bet Trader Joe’s has GF trail

mix already done—could be a model for your own.

Subject: GF trail mix

recipe and K-Toos

Hello,

My oldest son who is not a celiac has asked that I buy some type of

trail mix for him to eat. Since January when his two younger brothers

were diagnosed with Celiac, I have brought very little into the house that is

not gf, except for sandwich bread for the oldest to make sandwiches with.

We try very hard to have food in the house that everyone is able to eat.

Does anyone have a great recipe for making trail mix? I know that

my oldest would love for it to have rice crackers in it, but I don't know that

you can find them without all of the seasonings already on them. Most of

them, the ones that come with peas and rice crackers have soy sauce added, I

believe.

Has anyone found the K-Toos cookies in stores or do you have to place

the order with Kinnickinnick? I have asked that the stores that I shop at

try to get them, but I haven't heard back from anyone.

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks,

Isabel

Thanks for the ideas of putting together my own mix. I'll check with Trader Joe's to see if they have anything already put together. And... in March or April, if anyone find K-Toos in stores, let's write to discuss where they show up. I can't wait to find them in stores and I don't know that I will wait until then either. I hate to pay the shipping charge, but I might just order them this coming week since I haven't heard anyone say that they are not good. They sound GREAT! I made scads of trail mix last summer for our camping trip. The recipe

was something like:

Ener-G GF/soy-free pretzels

almonds

dried blueberries (don't like raisins) from Trader Joe's

dried cherries, also from Trader Joe's

peanuts

Crunch Toons

mini M & M's

Perky Rice cereal (the little round balls - I think Drager's carries

it, and I know WF does)

The pretzels really filled the cracker place quite well.

The K-Too's will be at Cornerstone Nutrition March 28th, 2006. That is the first date that we have been told that they will be availible for retail stores. If we get an updated date I will let you know.

This recipe truly sounds the best and I'll try making it this coming week. Where did you find Crunch Toons, I thought they had been discontinued? Crunch Toons have been discontinued - but I bought the last 40 bags in

California, and we still have 2 bags left. My little celiac doesn't

care about " stale. "

Maybe for your none-GF son, you make a separate bag, with a few

Goldfish crackers?

I guess I could add gold fish or the soy sauce rice crackers for the older one. Even after a year of the kids being gluten free, I still struggle bringing non gf food into the house. I guess I need to get over this atleast a little for the older one's sake. A good sweet mix is raisins, chocolate chips, raw pecans, and raw

cashews. The kids like to mix it up themselves.

As a parent, I know just what you mean: I don't eat anything in front

of my son that he can't have, even though his food restrictions are

much more limiting than mine. Both his Dad and I try to keep the

gluten in the house to the absolute minimum - Dad's bread and cereal.

But lately our son has begun really trying to think of others in a

considerate why - doing things for Grandma, helping the neighbors,

etc. And as one part of that, he has begun to ask if we could get Dad

a box of his favorite crackers or cookies when we grocery shop. He's

able to deal with the idea that someone else eats things he can't in a

more mature way than I expected at his age (6). I'm the one that says

we'll get Daddy his crackers, but he has to take them to the office!

Talk to your boys and see if they're okay with their brother eating

something different. Their response might be different than you expect.

I have one twin that is ok with others eating foods that they cannot have, but one of them is very sinsetive and still has a hard time watching others eating food that he cannot. I will probably make two mixes and to one of them add something that the oldest can have and will love eating. I struggle with food in the house that they cannot eat. Thanks for your kind words. Crunch Toons were a potato based little cracker, similar to Goldfish,

that came in Loony Toons shapes like Tweety Bird and Bugs Bunny. They

were GF, quite tasty and now are discontinued.
