Heck the stress could be hurting...

But 10mcg of thyroid hormone isn't exactly a substantial dose,

it is a tiny fraction of what a healthy thyroid puts out each

day.

Most people are probably on doses from 25mcg to 170 mcg daily,

although it varies based on weight, and how much remaining

thyroid function you have.

Probably the first thing to do is get your thyroid test results,

and post them here, and people will explain how to interpret

them, and check you are not being under medicated.

Websites there are lots - try www.thyroid.about.com for some

background reading, and other forums.

I had the RAI in early April, and now take 125mcg of Synthroid daily. I

think I'm getting close to my right dosage, and starting to feel

better. There have been plenty of ups and downs, and I think regular

testing of T3/FT4 are really, really important to getting this right. I

am not familiar with unithroid, but I would not be at all suprised to

find you are at way to low of a dose.

KJ,

There are many people here who've struggled to feel normal or even better

post-RAI. You're not alone in this. Many people have been under

medicated, meaning they require more thyroid hormone than their doctors

prescribe OR require another type of hormone or combination.

Simon sends you to a great site: check out Shomon's web site on

about.com. I'd also read her book: Living Well With Hypothyroidism.

What RAI does is replace one set of physical problems (hyperthyroidism) wiht

another (hypothyroidism). You now need to become an expert on

hypothyroidism so you can closely monitor your treatment.

Lots of help here. . .

Hi KJ, I don't have much advice for you, most what I know applies to people

before RAI who are trying to achieve remission, but I wanted to welcome you

and let you know you have found a great list... there are several people

here who have done RAI and are hypo, so they will have some information for

you, I'm sure!

Welcome!

Hi KJ:

My Joe was diagnosed with Grave's in Feb and had RAI in March. He was put on

Levoxyl (synthroid) 100mcg in June, but that wasn't helping as he felt

horrible all of the time. About three weeks ago in mid-July he was put on

125mcg of Levoxyl and is feeling much better -- like his " Normal self " ...

although with Grave's you must realize that it has been a very long time

since he felt " normal " so this is very positive.

I hope you are able to find a healthcare professional who will take new labs

for you and get you on a thyroid replacement dose that works for you too.

Hang in there!

Ann :)

Hi group!

Thanks for all the welcomes and support. I'm going to my doc this

week and will hopefully either find a new doc or have some kind of

resolution. I cannot continue feeling this lousy...to quote Dana

Congrats to you & your post op pregnancy.

I am 33 weeks pregnant and post op 18 months. I lost -125lbs before getting

pregnant. I too have a 5yo child (a daughter).

I have found being pregnant this time is much more enjoyable. Like feeling

the baby move sooner, getting around better, showing like I am pregnant- not

just fat LOL, wearing maternity clothes. I weighed 311 lbs the day I

delivered my 1st child (post op). I will only weigh about 200 lbs when I

deliver this child. I have gained 25lbs this pregnancy compared to the 71

lbs I gained with my 1st.

Good Luck. Just take your vitamins and keep hydrated.

Welcome , and congrats on your pregnancy!

Hi group!! I was referred here by a " sister " on " Gastric Bypass

Family " . I do not know if anyone here knows of, or belongs to, that

group, but thought I would mention it.

I have just subscribed, as in about a minute ago, so I haven't had

time to look through many of the archives. I had Open RNY on

10/16/02, and I am 11 weeks pregnant. I have lost, so far, 65 pounds.

I would like to know if there is anyone out here who is in a similar

situation as I. I am scared, worried and stressed, and would like to

share experiences if possible with anyone who can help me. Everyone I

have talked to so far has had their babies far post op, as in a year

or more afterwards. This was my intention, but my husband and I have

been blessed a little earlier than anticipated. I was on BCP's, but

was also on antibiotics for infection in my incision, and having a

wisdom tooth pulled, and missed a pill as well, so I guess that is

what could have done it, a combination of all, or just one.

I am sure this will be a helpful group, and look forward to hearing

from some of you.

Thanks in advance,

in Illinois.

Welcome and congrats! I was scared as well when I got pregnant at only 7

weeks post-op. My son was born on 1-16-03 and is just beautiful! This

pregnancy was harder for me than my pre-op pregnancy but it all worked out well.

I did decide to go to a Perinatologist (high risk OB) for this pregnancy. Any

questions feel free to ask. This great group of woman helped me tremendously

when I was nervous and pregnant.

Hi ,

relax, hold on tight, enjoy the ride.....LOL

I had the open RNY on 05/13/02 and am now 33 1/2 weeks pregnant. I

got " lucky " about 8 weeks out of surgery. This is truly a miracle

Baby for us. We have one daughter that will be 6 years old in May and

were told without fertility drugs I would not be able to conceive

again (by 5 different doctors)...well, here I am...

I went into surgery with 284 pounds and am currently 184.8....I have

been down to 181 pounds before, but my weight at this point of time

is really fluctuating from week to week due to the pregnancy.

Sometimes I have gained a pound....sometimes I have lost a pound. I

was closely monitored by my surgeon and my OB Doctor and currently

everything is on track.

I am in a high risk category...BUT it has NOTHING to due with the

gastric bypass surgery. My cervix is incompetent and I had to have a

cerclage to hold Baby in at about 16 weeks.

If you have any questions.....don't hesitate to ask.....I'll be more

than happy to let you know what I had to do......

Good Luck....and again...don't stress...not good for the Baby....LOL

Hugs,

Petra

Hi, I am . I had Lap RNY on July 26, 2002, and just found out

2 weeks ago that we were expecting our first child. At first, I was

terrified, because I was only 6 months post op, but after discussing

with my surgeon's office, OB doctor, and the high risk specialist, I

feel a lot better. My starting weight was 233.5, and I am down to

158 (-76 pounds). Like you, doctors had told me that without losing

a substantial amount of weight ( I am barely 5'2 " ), we would not be

able to conceive, so we were quite shocked when it happened after

trying for so many years prior to my surgery. I have Polycystic

ovaries, and that was one of the main problems that was agravated

further by being so much overweight. I am so glad that this

website is available to share with people in the same situation with

me. For those of you that got pregnant so soon post op, did you

continue to lose weight or did you stop losing and gain some, etc.?

Did your pouch stretch out while you were pregnant and how did you do

after delivery? Did you lose weight fairly easily? Sorry for all of

the questions, I just know that the best resource are people that

have experienced first hand. I haven't gained any weight yet, but I

am only going on 8 weeks. We are due 10/29/03.

Have a great day!

Thanks!

Hi Jill,

Welcome to the group! I certainly don't mind having you here at ALL! It's

great having a place to come for information, even if you havent gotten to the

" pregnant " stage yet. I have 2 children. My first was PRE WLS, and I got

pregnant with my 2nd 1 year and 9 months after WLS. You have done a great job

in your weight loss so far, keep up the good work.

Depending on how much weight you want to lose, you don't necessarily have to

wait the 18 months to try and conceive. But make sure you and your doctor are

ok with you trying once you decide to after you have maximized your weight loss.

Best of luck to you, and I look forward to watching your progress!

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jill, I'm 25 years old.

I just had surgery 4 1/2 weeks ago. My new b-day is 2/28/03. I'm now down

58lbs. I started out at 352 and I'm now 294. :)

Anyways, I'm married and we already have 3 children but we've decided we want

to have one more. I know I have to wait at least 18 mos. but I want to find out

about other womens experiences with everything. And try to be prepared for

what's going to come when we're ready :)

I hope nobody minds too much about my joining. I'm looking forward to meeting

you all and making new friends. Take care. ~Jill

It is best to see a resurfing doctor for an assessment.

The data for BHR (Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, done in the UK and Europe)

supports 12 years -- meaning that they've been putting them in that long

and have no pattern of failure. Next year, they'll tell you 13 years.

However, I was told that the expectation is that this should last the rest

of my life. I'm 42. There are many factors at work here (bone stock, degree

of deformity, etc., etc.) so your mileage will vary.

Cheers,

Jeff

For what it is worth, we asked Dr. DeSmet the same question. While he

would not promise more than the data supports, it was his

instinct/best guess that our BhRs would last forever.

This is just his instinct/educated guess - he would never make a claim

to this effect, but Dr. DeSmet's instinct means alot to me. His

educated guess is that the metal itself should last another 130 years

at a minimum (discounted from 500 years for hard wear). As for bone

stock issues, his experience was that bone quality in the neck of

femur improves over time because of the way weight is loaded. He felt

our natural hips are at much greater danger than our BHR hips.

It sounds as if your husband's tumor is fairly low. There are two

reasons for waiting for surgery, as I think you probably know by

now - first, doing radiation and chemo beforehand can shrink the

tumor to where a colostomy is not required - the extra cm or so

allows the surgeons to reconnect the rectum after taking out the

tumor. Second - keep this in mind - it is also associated with

lowering the chance of recurrance. Hopefully, surgery will be able

to clean everything up and there will be no further evidence of

metastatic disease or even lymph node involvement; if that is the

case, the investment up front could have substantial dividends down

the road.

One thing that I can relate - the pump is for the birds. Depending

on what is being delivered, if it is 5FU alone, you might consider

asking about the pill, Xeloda. From what I read and from what my

docs say (there have been some studies in the past six months or so

further supporting it), it is just as effective and it is definitely

more humane.

Be strong and hang in there - you guys can and will beat it. As has

been discussed fairly frequently in the forum, I would make sure

that you find a board certified surgeon (colorectal, that is) to do

the procedure.

Hello all

I have recently found this board, and have been doing some reading.

I hope I can keep you all straight, there are lots of names to

remember. First of all, I want to say God bless you all!

I am a colon cancer (stage 4) survivor. I was diagnosed in December

2003. I know you all know.. from the moment of my diagnosis it was

many, many visits to Dr's, scans, tests, more tests and finally on

December 22nd, 2003, I started a regimine of Chemo (5fu 24 x 7 pump)

and 28 treatments of radiation. The cancer had spread to my lung,

vaginal wall, and bladder. After radiation (damage) I had to have

emergency surgery on February 20th, 2004. That was to fix a fistula

that had develped from the radiation. It wasn't until I was on the

operating table that it was discovered on my bladder. I have an

EXCELLENT colo/rectal surgeon. She called a urologist to assist her

in surgery once she determined it was on the bladder, he is an

excellent doctor as well. My oncologist, who is also excellent put

me on more chemo after recovery from surgery. Avastin was approved

the week I was in the hospital.

The surgeon got my tumor " with good margins " . That was great

news to wake up to. I had a portacath put in prior to my new chemo

regimine the end of April 2004. I had 13 treatments of

5fu/oxiliplatin/leukovoren. In September 2004 my pet scan showed

clean.

Due to another formed fistula, again becasue of radiation, I have

had a leaky bladder since the last surgery. The bladder didn't

heal. So, this past December 7th, 2004 I had surgery to attempt a

repair of the leaky bladder, I am currently recobeing at home and

have a cathedar, which will be removed on Monday, January 3rd. At

that time, we will find out if it healed properly. I'm praying

hard! While I was in for surgery..performed by the same colo/rectal

surgeon, and urologist, they did some exploratory surgery while in

there. There was no evidence of cancer in my abdomen.

My original surgery casued me to have a colostomy. It's not such a

bad thing to live with. I will add to this post I live in

Minnesota, and am a 44

year old mommy to 3 elementary aged children, 2 boys and a girl,

and have been married to Tom for 12 1/2 years.. he is a real

trooper, and a huge support to me! A wonderful caregiver.

I never know how to put in writing what I have endured over the last

year.. and hope this post is easy to follow. I tend to skip around,

because there is so much. My dear husband has made a website for

me, if anyone is interested I can post it.

It is so nice to meet all of you.. and I have room for each of you

on my prayer list!

Wow .. You are surely and truly a survivor. I am glad you found this

group.

I will start my adventure next week. That guy of yours is definitely a keeper.

How did the kids deal with the situation? I have grandkids living with me and

they are pretty accepting about things. My youngest granddaughter loves to give

shots. She makes sure I know they are going to hurt so I can yell. Kids!!!

Be sure to keep us informed... Yes post the website.

What a sweet woman! And your warmth and friendliness is a wonderful addition

to the group. I'm so sorry to hear about the radiation damage though - and a

little angry about it too. I was warned, prior to having the radiation done,

by a wonderful woman named Joyce, that to prevent that kind of damage to

drink lots and lots of water while going through the treatments. Perhaps it

couldn't be prevented in your case, but this is an opportunity to pass on the

same

knowledge to others that maybe facing this treatment. Even if it only lessens

the trauma of the radiation treatment to the body it is worth mentioning.

I am 43, with rectal cancer. I have a temporary ileostomy that hopefully

will be reversed in a couple of weeks. I was stage IIIA at first, with one

tumor

and one lymph involved. The tumor was significantly reduced by chemo/rad

concurrent treatment prior to surgery. Through all of this I feel I have been

very fortunate with my treatments, though it hasn't been easy. The folks here

and on other boards have been lifesavers!

Your onc and surgeon are to be commended. Sounds as though they are working

as a team and really trying to take the best care of you! I have no

children, and can only imagine how much more difficult this course must be with

worrying about them and it sounds like you have a great marriage as well.

These

are powerful incentives to hang on to!

You have a found a good place for questions and support. Welcome, !

Blessings,

Sheila
