Will Antidepressants Affect Weight Loss?

From The Daily Dish 7-2-05

This Q & A is from the June Issue of The South Beach DietT Newsletter. Get more Q & As like this delivered to your home each month! Get 2 issues risk-free! I am currently taking antidepressants and I am worried about how they will affect my weight loss. Will they cause me to plateau or stall?— Sylvia P., Botson, MA If you're on antidepressant medication, it's vital that you consult your physician before beginning any eating plan. Some drugs are associated with certain side effects that could impact your ability to exercise and eat right. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), including Paxil, Prozac, Luvox, Effexor, Zoloft, and Celexa, may cause insomnia, fatigue, dry mouth, weakness, and changes in appetite that can lead to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't try The South Beach Diet™ while on these medications. With the help of your physician, you should be able to incorporate the lifestyle changes I recommend into your medical treatment plan. Your doctor will be able to tell you what to expect from your medication and may even suggest switching to one with fewer side effects. Though at first you may find that your weight loss is slower than average, don't give up. If you stick to a healthy eating plan as such as you're able each day, eventually you will see positive results.
