Guest guest
You know, I would like to know this too. I've thought of applying. I haven't worked in 12 years but I had worked since I was 15 until I was 40, 13 of those years for the government which doesn't pay into SSI. Guest guest
I was wrong. Its called credits not points. It said I need 38 credits of work and 20 had to be earned in the last 10 yrs. Go figure. I've worked most of my teen and adult life, took 12 years off to raise my child, and I can't get SSI. WHAT THE H*LL IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE???? Guest guest
Problem is Jackie, it wouldn't work with us honest folks. My mom complains about this too. All the people we know that get something for nothing that don't really need it. When she or I need something the slam the door in our face. I'm talking about handouts or charity here, and only when necessary. I'm not talking about the great medical care I've received or the fact that I do have most of what I need. There have been times when I've needed help from government agencies, when I've been down on my luck and I've just gotten a big fat NO! Guest guest
We don't really need it right now so I won't try for it. We struggle a little yes, but we are not poor. It just seems sometimes like I paid into this thing for years and I'm sick now and should be able to get something to offset us a little. But my dh is working and I wouldn't qualify anyway. Mainly what I was talking about is people who have cheat and get things they don't really deserve to get. My sister does now need help, she is obese and has too illnesses too numerous to name. But when she was younger her only illness was the bottle and she collected welfare by pleading illness the whole of her youth, after she divorced her scoundrel husband. They put her through school, she was trained to be a legal secretary (those women make very good money btw) and she never actually worked. She went to and Wales for crying out loud. I have a cousin, love her dearly, she owns her own home, doesn't really have any bills to speak of. She is sick, fibromyalgia (sp?), don't get me wrong, but she's not needy. Charities pay for her heat. She buys herself all kinds of neat things, what I'd consider luxuries and she allows charities to buy her heat. Another young lady we know uses her grandmother's handicapped parking placard when grandma is not with her. My mother threatened to turn her in the next time she saw her do it. Sadly, where they live, it's only a $75 fine. In CA it can be up to $3,500 and possible jail time. When I was a kid there were women living with their husbands, claiming divorce and poverty and collecting welfare. LICS June "The best protection any woman can have...is courage." Guest guest
We need it as Chuck just gets SS. Now in May when he turns 65 they will take out approx. $88 for Medicare, leaving us a little over $1050/ mo to live on. Believe me its not easy. I won't be 62 till Oct 2007 then I will get a small check but something is better than nothing. We are trying to get by and not get food stamps as I feel there are a lot of children out there that need to be fed. Guest guest
SSDisability (both short and long term) exists to keep you from having to sell your house and all your possessions if you suddenly become unable to work. Short term SSD pays a percentage of the salary you were making when you had to stop working (I think it's about 60% but I could be wrong), and lasts for less than a year. Long term SSD is more difficult to qualify for, and can last as long as you live or until you'd be forced into retirement. It pays you less than short term SSD. But in both cases, the program exists to bridge the gap between being a wage-earner and bringing home nothing -- that's why the requirement that you earn a lot of those points recently. Anyway that's how it was explained to me, back when I was helping a friend get long-term SSD approved. hugs, Nan --- & nne Svihlik wrote: > I was wrong. Its called credits not points.
