Janice, I'm envious! Apples from the store taste nothing like they do

fresh off the tree. In the area I live in we have apple farms not too

far away and we get fresh apples that way. The small town they come

from has an apple festival every fall on the first weekend in October.

They draw in thousands of people every year for it. You can get apple

anything!

We have an Apple Fest near us at the same time. Then in Traverse City they have

a cherry fest in the Spring.

Dear Jeroen, may I know what type of apple you consumed? tq

Ive had iga for 5 years now.

It was discovered at age 30.

At the beginning I lost 2.2g proteine a day.

Quickly that was down to 0.5g at which it has been for a few years.

I use these test strips on a regular basis and discovered recently

that apples have a positive effect on the daily loss of proteine.

My physician does not approve, but to prove to myself I at 6 apples

during the day I had to collect 24h urine.

It was mesured to be at 0.22g.

Does anyone have similar experience or can anyone try the next

routine check is done?

Kind regards,

I've never heard of this, but if it works for you, it's not like apples are

going to hurt you (unless you have a potassium problem, in which case the

potassium in apples, while moderate, can add up).

There are 2 observations that I might make though:

1) Unlike serum creatinine, proteinuria is NOT a measure of kidney function

in any way whatsoever, and, it's a very variable thing, even untreated.

2) The dipstiks or test strips are notoriously inaccurate. They are only

really useful to alert a doctor to the presence of proteinuria, and then an

actual urinalysis has to be done to find out how much.

Hi Jeroen,

Welcome to the group, although I am sorry you have had IgAN for 5 years.

I would check with your Nephrologist about eating that many apples. Many

people with compromised renal function can have problems with elevated

potassium,

and it may be a good idea just to make sure your potassium levels are running

OK.

I am glad that your protein level went down though. That is always good

news.
