I felt like that for the first several weeks! And having a log leg was

exactly how I described it-LOL.

I got to stay in the hospital an extra day after the first one, and several

days after the second one because they couldn't get my hemoglobin up to a

decent level. Apparently I've inherited my mom's tendency for low

hemoglobin, or at least after surgery...got two pints of blood after the

second one and still wasn't quite up to snuff, but my surgeries were longer

and more complicated than most (except perhaps Edith's ;-).

Thanks for the feedback , certainly one of the benefits of this

group is learning that your not alone in the experiences that you

have. That offers a great deal of comfort!

P.S. Your up rather late! Its only mid-afternoon here in Oz...

For about the first week after surgery I nicknamed my left

operated hip " deadwood " . Though when I was in a good mood,

I called it " driftwood " . LOL....so " log " is indeed within

the same name family!

Rest and repair. Best of luck to you.

Out of Hiding

G'day from Australia fellow surfacehippies. I've finally decided to

come out from hiding, having " lurked " this discussion group for a

number of months now soaking up every bit of info I could before

deciding to take the plunge myself.

I'm an American living in the land downunder (fantastic country) and

had a RBHR by Dr. Len Walter in Sydney on May 14. I was up on

crutches by day 2, walking with a cane on day 3, and discharged on

the morning of day 4!

I'd like to thank Edith (a regular postee on this board) for her

helpful personal advice and sharing of her own experiences with Dr.

Walter, whom I chose upon learning he is considered among the leading

(if not the leading) OS in Australia for BHR resurfacing.

I'm quite pleased with my recovery so far (now one week post-op),

still working through the stiffness and soreness stage....(anyone

else feel like they had a log in their leg during the first few

days?? lol)

Only temporary setback I encountered was a declining hemoglobin count

over the first 3 days post-op which resulted in significant light

headedness and dizzyness for about a day and 1/2, until the Iron

supplements which were prescribed for me apparently kicked in. If it

had continuted to decline, I would have needed a blood transfusion

(the Dr. wasn't concerned about this possibility however) Don't

remember reading any similar problem from anyone else in this

group...can anyone else relate something similar?

Anyway, eagerly looking forward to resuming a full range of

activities again even though I was able to keep myself very fit pre-

op through a regular body-building style weight training regime.

Hi Chuck,

Good to see you turn up alive and well after encountering the good Dr.

Walter......... may he enjoy a long and happy life............smile.

I know all about the log as mine wouldn't cooperate at all having been

atrophied for 35 years.........smile. A very different leg today........ so

they do get better even from that position..........

I had a few hassles with iron levels too...... often a bit

iffy.........despite a couple of blood transfusions as my blood pressure

would insist on staying far too low..........so ended up on Iron tabs as

well........... However, I was so light headed with the sheer joy I was

experiencing to finally regain a hip after 35 years, it would have been hard

to attribute it to iron deficiency...........smile

All the best,

Edith LBHR Dr. L Walter Sydney 8/02

Thanks Edith,

As you know, Dr. Walter is a man of few words...about the best I

could get from him post-op was that the operation

was " routine " ...coming from him that was strong enough confirmation

that I was in good shape! lol He did visit EACH day however (albeit

brief) while I in the hospital, which was actually unexpected.

Have my followup visit with him on Tuesday. Will give him your

regards.

Hi Chuck,

Congratulations on your new BHR up there in Sydney. My surgeon

Young is very well respected in Melbourne and the signed framed

photos lining his visiting rooms includes the cream of Australian

sportsmen and women. We hear great things about the US, Brit and

Canadian OS's as well as DeSmet from Belgium but it is comforting to

know that here downunder we have some great surgeons who are leading

the way such your Len Walter and the surgeons at the Melbourne

Orthopaedic Group. The bed manner you describe seems similar to my

experience however when you have the best, trusting is very easy. My

visits were also very short but I learnt to be prepared and I always

received an informed response to my questions if I was able to get

them out quickly enough. Enjoy your recovery and all the best.

Hey Dasher,

Good to hear from you. Actually I live in Melbourne and my first BHR

consulation was with Rod Dalziel of the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group

(small world, eh?). My decision to have the procedure done in Sydney

was in part due to the reputation of Dr Walter, but perhaps more

importantly, my girlfriend lives up here (yeah, I know....one of

those expensive every other weekend long distance kind of

relationships....lol). Anyway, I figured my after-op care was as

important a factor as the op itself so I elected to come up here. I'm

recuperating in beautiful Avalon in the Northern Beaches area and

having the pleasure of sleeping in each morning while my partner goes

off to work, lol.

So far the recovery has been textbook based on the best I've read on

this forum so I look forward to regaining my previously very active

lifestyle in the very near future.

I'll be back in Melbourne in a week or so and back to the grind

shortly thereafter. Perhaps someday we can catch up for one of

Melbourne's world beating cuppa's and compare bionic notes.....!
