The book my OB's office provides ( " Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Newborn, " 2001) cites B12 deficiency in general as leading to anemia and central nervous system damage. It lists the important functions of B12 as: • Aids folate function • Essential in protein metabolism • Important in formation of red blood cells • Maintains nerve fibers If you're concerned, bring those numbers up! My doc doesn't object to my B12 supplement, but definitely ask before adding anything to yoour plan. How far along are you? --Darla
Guest guest
Tammy, I wish I had an answer to your question. I found out my B12 is very low and have begun to get B12 shots from my family doctor. None of my doctors has expressed a specific concern about this effect on the baby. Guest guest
I'm not sure what the effect on the baby is, but one effect on you is fatigue. I had low levels and was having a very tough time getting out of bed in the morning due to the tiredness. I started monthly shots but once I got pregnant that wasn't enough, so I now get an injection every 2 weeks and my levels are now in the normal range. Low B-12 level?? Hi. Do any of you know the answer to this question ... Will having a low B-12 level affect the baby? If so what are the effects? Tammy
Guest guest
I am so glad you asked that question!! My OB/GYN and the bariatric surgeon are giving me two different reports!! I am going to see a high risk specialist on Tuesday who hasn't dealth with bypass patients before. And on Monday I'm having a level II ultrasound (at 12 weeks) to detect any visible problems because of my B-12 levels. My bariatric surgeon, Dr. Alverdy, from the University of Chicago says that it's common and he's seen plenty of patients deliver normal fat babies. I, too, would appreciate any comments that anyone has. I will also report what the doctor says on Tuesday!! In my prayers,
Guest guest
I, too, got conflicting reports but decided to err on the side of caution. My B12 level was low so I was taking 1,000mcg tablet per day of B12 supplementation. Then I read that more of the vitamin is absorbed if you use the sublingual 1000mcg tablets so I switched. I didn't start the pregnancy anemic (hemoglobin and hematocrit anemia) but I was perniciously anemic (low B12). I do think it matters where the baby's spinal cord is concerned. Folic acid is also very important in our diets. I can't stress to myself enough the importance of supplementation since our WLS especially when we are considering having more babies! wishing you fantastic US results next week! Guest guest
Thank you for the information. I was diagnosed with pernicious anemia in my 11th week but I have no idea if I started that way. I'm so terrified that I've caused permanent damage. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts!! Guest guest
, Are you taking any B12 supplements now? I would start today if you haven't already. I understand your concern. My OB told me that anything the baby needed for his development he would take from me (BOY DID HE!!). He was born without any lasting effects of my anemia (so it seems now). I was concerned that if my B12 level was too low to start with in pregnancy there was none for him to take from me. I will keep you in my prayers!
