Guest guest
, What are your symptoms? I don't think a golfball size fibroid in 5 yrs. would be considered " rapidly growing " . What procedure did they use to remove the " football " sized fibroid? Now THAT seems really big. What were your symptoms then? As far as a hyst at 29, I'd get a 2nd or 3rd opinion from a GYN or an RE before I took that major step. You may change your mind about kids 5 yrs. from now. Have you considered UAE? My NP didn't even know about that. NPs and GPs don't know everything about fibroids so don't take their word as gospel. Keep learning and good luck in your quest. oke
Guest guest
Actually, the golfball is a new growth....since last April. I'm still waiting to find out the sizes of the two that were found last spring..at that time, I had a " pea " and a " marble " . The pea had grown in a month (we found it on a " second opinion)...the marble had grown from pea sized in that time also. >From: maryoke@... >Reply-To: uterinefibroids >To: uterinefibroids >Subject: Re: 29 with second bout with fibroids >Date: Thu, 13 Feb 2003 09:18:35 -0600 (CST) > >, >What are your symptoms? Guest guest
Hey , Wow. A football sized fibroid removed in a lunch hour? Whose the surgeon, I may be interested?! Dog gone it. Not fair to be dealing with this again, and at your young age. You were prescribed depo provera for a couple of years. Were you informed by your prescribing dr. of the association between depo provera and increased fibroid growth? Have you thought about getting off the depo provera, monitoring the fibroids for another 3-6 mos to see if the growth stops...what if the depo provera was responsible for much of the growth of the now golf ball size? If you can manage to see what happens without the depo provera and hold off for awhile? What do you think? You'd have continued ovarian and uterine function, things we so take for granted, until it's gone. Try getting on Jeannah McElroy's NHRT-HRT groups for awhile to get a flavor of women frantic to find the right hormonal combinations, post TAH-BSO. It's tough. Do you want to risk the next 30 years of trying to restore lost hormonal function? Well, it's a risk to consider. But I do share your extreme frustration... for young women, there's really no good options out there, other than repeat myomectomy. UAE, I'd want to hold off on that option until closer to menopause. I wish I had a better answer for you, I really do. Marsha > Actually, the golfball is a new growth....since last April. Guest guest
Hi , I can relate, my story on this site, archived at 29681, just go on web, goto groups.yahoo.com/group/uterinefibroids and plug # in the search space. You'll need to log on--even if you got this by e-mail. Anyway, your NP could be right, & it sounds like fibroids are still small enough for all your options to be open. Hears to good decision making! ---Alma Lynn
Guest guest
The surgeon I went to in 1997 is Dr. Cothren in Nashville, TN. He is an absolutely wonderful human being. If anyone on the list is looking for such a doc in Tennessee, here's the web site. http://www.womenshealthgrp.com/4.2.html Unfortunately, I am in Colorado now and have to many critters to try to kennel in order to go back to Dr. Cothren. Regardless of what surgery I decide on, I will basically be going it alone, as I have no family here. I have friends to transport me, etc though. I am not as freaked out as I was the first time around. I had actually gone to a urologist to have a kidney/bladder condition re-diagnosed (I had to urinate every 15 minutes, though every thirty minutes while awake is perfectly normal for me..). They had to do an ultrasound to see the ureters and bladder and came across what they called " a large mass " . I was then sent home, to return the next day for a sonogram, then sent across the hall to an OB/GYN.it was a nasty old fart who had a reputation for not liking women.great field buddy! He said he would have to cut me " hip to hip " and perform a hysterectomy. My mother was with me and we looked at each other, got up and walked out. Then we got on the phone with Dr. Cothren's office (it was a Friday and we lived in NW Florida)..we scheduled an appt for Monday, and he operated on Wednesday.said the procedure only took about 45 minutes, though I was zonked for a good 6 hours! Guest guest
Don't overlook the possibility of different imaging to explain the different sizes (I'm sure Roma will agree). On my next u.s. I plan on going to the same hospital and requesting the same tech (to compare growth) because everyone may not do it exactly the same. Also your hormones (at that time of the month) may play a part in the size.
Guest guest
, My apologies for not asking more specifically if he did a lap myo, hysteroscopic resection and type of fibroid(s)? I just checked his site. I see he is a member of the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists (AAGL.com) Have you checked the AAGL.com physician finder for physicians in Colorado performing minimally invasive and uterine sparing procedures? If the golf ball is symptomatic/growing, maybe you have that option--Cecille just mentioned? Take good care, glad you found the doctor right for you. The original urinary frequency, your not experiencing that now, correct? Your trying to get back your normal menstrual cycles with prometrium? Guest guest
I had a laparotomy before...can barely even see the scar these days (surgical tape was used instead of external sutures). The fibroid then was outside the uterus, wrapped from front to back, pressing on the bladder and rectum. This time around, I have two outside the uterus and the golfball is inside. Will not know the exact size of the other two until I have my Level II US next week. For the past month, I have been having abdominal and low back pain. I have also had spotting for about 2 weeks (first sign of anything remotely close to a period in more than 2 years due to being on Depo until last summer). > >Reply-To: uterinefibroids >To: uterinefibroids >Subject: Re: 29 with second bout with fibroids >Date: Fri, 14 Feb 2003 18:32:23 -0000 > >, >My apologies for not asking more specifically >if he did a lap myo, hysteroscopic resection >and type of fibroid(s)? Guest guest
I am kinda in the same boat as you but a little farther up the creek shall we say. I am 31 and potentially facing my THIRD procedure dealing with these things. I had a abdominal myo in 94 at 23, a UAE in 98 at 27 and back to square one. My UAE didn't work too well because they were a little too big to begin with. As of my last MRI last month my uterus is at 20-22 wks and my largest fibroid is at 14cm with friends. I am asymptomatic (no pain, normal periods some heavy bleeding on 1st-2nd day). I don't know what to do at this point. My gyn says there is a small chance I can have another myo but he cannot be definite w/out actually operating. I went to the infertility specialist at Univ of PA and he says the same thing. So I am stuck... I truly understand your plight. There hasn't been too many like me in here (or that have responded) I wish you luck Angi
Guest guest
Hi , I was 27 when I was diagnosed with the 1st fibroid at the time of surgery it was 19cms after taking 3 months of lupron so it was alot bigger prior to that. I was only free from fibroids for approx 2 months after the surgery, I was 28 at the time of my myo. I was also told prior to my ultrasound last feb that the reoccurance rate for me was also very high since my fibroid was so large and it grew at a fast rate. So I am having ultrasounds done every 6 months to watch the growth of this new fibroid. I just had a sonohysterogram done last month which I will fine the results out next week when I follow- up with my gyn. I know that you have no thoughts of children right now but you could change or mine in the future. And for a dr to tell you that it will be risky getting pregnant with your history of fibroids and cysts, I can't see why. My gyn has supported me with my decision to have children and hasn't discourage me in any way. I would go and get a different opinion about that aspect. I know in the future after I have my family and if the fibroids continue to come back I will have a hysterectomy done to save me from having a lot of surgeries. But you where free from fibroids for over 4 years is a good thing. Don't let a dr talk you in getting a hysterectomy if you aren't comfortable with that aspect.
