I'm new

Hi everyone! Thank you for allowing me to join your corner on the internet. I found this list when I was frustrated a couple of days ago because my 8 month old refused to nurse for a whole day. Needless to say, I was in slight discomfort. I have another boy who is 2 1/2. My baby is the opposite of his brother - he refuses a bottle or formula. He is now liking a cup so I can give him juice when he doesn't want to nurse. I'm sure this is an old topic, but I'd still like your opinion. I see nothing wrong with nursing past the first year, if that's what the baby wants to do, and mom is okay with it. But what about this scenerio. Baby is weaned after a year. New baby comes when he/she is close to 2 years old. He/she sees baby nursing and wants to try. How many of you have let the older sibling try breastmilk and did you express some in a cup or just let him nurse from you? My 2 year old didn't show any interest when the baby nursed, but if he did, I would let him try some from a cup.

Kim,

Welcome to the list. My daughter weaned at 13 months (due to my lack of information and support) and when her brother was born when she was almost 6 she asked to nurse again. I let her. It was an awkward moment and she had no idea what to do but she felt accepted and a part of what was going on between me and her brother. She only tried for a moment and has never asked again. I haven't had the experience with a toddler but I would certainly allow my weaned toddler to nurse again if I came up against that situation. :D

My daughter was still not fully weaned at 29 mos. when Sam was born in

Feb. She was only nursing sometimes in the morning when she woke up and

at night before bed. After Sam was born she only nursed a few more days

before fully weaning. She was pretty much comfort nursing for the last

few months, and holding her while nursing the baby seemed to satisfy her

need. Joan

How

many of you have let the older sibling try breastmilk and did you express

some in a cup or just let him nurse from you? My 2 year old didn't

show any interest when the baby nursed, but if he did, I would let him

try some from a cup.

For what it's worth, my second child nursed until she was 22 months, and

I was 5 months pregnant, and she paused until after the new baby was

born. Once she saw him nursing, she asked to nurse again. I

let her nurse, but she had really forgotten how. Up until several

months ago, she would ask to nurse, and I would let her. She never

regained the skills to nurse successfully. I've heard that most

toddlers who interrupt nursing during a pregnancy forget how to nurse,

but have interest in nursing when they see a baby nurse. My daughter has

very fond memories of nursing.

My first child was 5 when my third was born (he's now 2). When he

saw my second child nurse, he asked to taste it. I offered some on

a spoon to him, and he liked the taste but didn't want to nurse. He

hasn't pursued asking for more either.

Sometimes, older children ask to nurse simply to see if they would be

allowed to again. For many older children, nursing equates with

strong feelings of love, and to be denied nursing may mean being denied

feelings of love. I feel that this is a bridge you have to cross

with your toddler's feelings in mind. The worst case scenario will

be that you have a newborn who nurses frequently and a toddler who nurses

infrequently. With a toddler, you can set rules for nursing as

well, like " after the baby " or only in a specific chair, or

only at night, etc. Toddler nursing is only unusual to us now since

it's so rare these days that we see a toddler in action at the

breast. In our history, toddlers were nursed well beyond their

second birthdays, and in most non-industrialized areas of the world,

toddlers still nurse beyond their second birthdays. American

industries tell us that we should put our toddlers on follow-up formulas

or cow's milk, since it " does a body good. " However,

there's no man-made product that comes close to breastmilk.

I'll post a separate note about the benefits to women who nurse past the

first birthday. I'm sure many here haven't seen it, and those who

have seen it before, I hope you find something new in it. :)

Hi Kim,

Welcome! I personally would allow a toddler to try nursing again; for an

older child, I'd express some milk into a cup.

Funny story: About 3 weeks ago, Austin (5) was sitting with me while I

nursed (5 weeks). He said, " 's drinking milk and I'd like to

drink milk too. " I thought, " Oh, heavens, here we go " and I said, " You want

some milk too? " Austin replied, " Yes, will you come pour some for me? "

Here I was, freaking that he wanted to try some breastmilk and he just

wanted me to pour him a glass of (cow's) milk from the fridge!

welcome to the list. I haven't had good luck with combining bottles and

breastfeeding. Everytime that my babies got bottles my milk supply would

start to flag. My first weaned to bottles because she just ultimately

refused to nurse. My suggestion is to make sure that you get breastfeeding

off to a good start before trying to introduce bottles. Avent bottles are

supposed to be better for switching back and forth between bottles and

breast.

Thanks for the advise I will make sure. The problem I have is that my

kids are up every 2 hrs no matter how long or how little i feed them and by

month 4 I've had it. That's why I was considering doing both this time to

hopefully help with the evening feeding my husband could do one or two in

the early evening and give me a break.

Thanks again

He could always feed the baby with a cup. Many babies do fine with a cup,

it just takes a bit more patience. http://www.lalecheleague.org catalog has

some cup feeding systems that even work for newborn babies.

Hi, Shirley!

I'm doing 1.5 sort of...1 during the week and 2 on weekends.

I did this last year and I realized that the reason I didn't stay on

it was because I added too many carbs too soon...also I added my

trigger food: BREAD too soon.

I've only been on this 10 days, but I feel much better already. I

don't want to lose weight too quickly.

This is definitely one of the best lists for SB.

Hey, Shirley...

Great job with the 6 lb. weight loss. I know how those personal issues can send one straight to the carb cabinet!!

I started last year and did fabulous but went downhill for awhile gaining most of it back. Now I am back on track but need to really psych myself every single day!! It is so easy for me to have a slip and then go 'whole hog'...every direction I turn (in my day) are forbidden foods.. it's just so tuff...

Anyhoo, just wanted to say welcome to the group, Shirley, and keep up the good work!!

- ALice (Rockville, Md.)

.... I especially love the way this group comes up with so many good suggestions for staying with SB!! :)

Hey, Shirley! I am new to this group and to SBD, and was reading through some of the posts. You and I have pretty much the same goals and starting weight -- I started at 184 lbs. on July 8th, and am now 177. My goal, is 125 as well.

Wishing you much success on SBD this time around...and a big hello to everyone!

Hi Ruth,

I am doing 1.5 most days too. I don't seem to have a problem with

adding bread or other carbs, it just can only be 1 and 1 fruit. Seems

to do the trick for me.

I can't imagine adding more than that yet!!

How much weight are you trying to lose? Here are my stats so far:

180/174/125

Great to meet you and thanks for the welcome!
