Hi ,

I for one hated being on Prednisone and weaned off of it after 4 weeks. I

did not have the hyper reaction you are speaking of. Maybe with all that extra

energy I would have wanted to tolerate the more troublesome side effects.

I never took prednisone for my IgAN, but a couple of times I took it for a

few days, for my asthma. It was about 50mg per day, as I recall. It made me

very hyper at even half that dose. From what I've heard, that's not

uncommon. It can also make you feel like you own the world. Just don't make

any big decisions while you're on it, especially if they involve a lot of

money, like buying a new Ferrari and moving to Tuscany or something :)

I don't know if I should look forward to that huge first dose of it when I

finally get a new kidney :)

I had 3 back to back high dose IV's to start then went on oral 80mg daily.

While on the IV's I looked like death warmed over...but not very warmed over

more like run thru the kitchen...I had no energy and slept most of it off. When

I switched to the 80mg daily dose I could only sleep 4-5 hours at a shot, I was

bouncing off the walls most of the day, then I'd hit a point in the day where I

would crash hard, then perk up again. Like Pierre said don't make any major

decisions while you are on the stuff. It does mess with clear thinking quite a

bit more than you realize. Now that I'm down to 5mg daily I feel more normal

again (or as normal as I'm gonna get anyhow). My sleep patterns have returned

to their pre-prednisone state and my energy level is back to normal too.

What sort of dose are you getting via the IV?

Hello! Question about Prednisone

Hi there!

I had the first session of the second series of my IV prednisone yesterday,

and I was wondering.....

After the first three part series I was blessed with ALOT of energy and felt

GREAT!!!! But into the second month I was getting more flank pain and less

energy, trouble sleeping etc...

The nurse that administered the meds yesterday thought that this second series

might " perk " me up again.

I slept well ( with help from half of a little blue pill. LOL) last night and

feel Hyper again today.

Is this " normal " ?

My Doctors are amused with how Hyper and energetic I am on Prednisone, and I

get the feeling that neither of them has seen quite this reaction to the drug in

their personal practices.

Personally, I don't want to go back to feeling 100 years old when I am only

35! How many people don't want to give up the Prednisone? Any?

LOL!

Wow, Pierre! If 50 mg sent you flying..... a really large dose might send you to

the psych ward! LOL!

I guess I better cancel those tickets to Holland I just ordered! LOL! Actually

this trip has been planned for two years! Although, Tuscany sounds darn good

right now!

I could handle feeling like I own the world after a good life time of feeling

defeated by it!

My husband is loving my new free spiritedness, I am usually VERY conservative

and over analyse things before making a decision, he is Mr Spontaneity! Like

they say... opposites attract!

My Neph gave me copies of the study from the Mayo Clinic, the original trial and

the ten year follow up.

The study patients didn't show much change in the protein leak for about 6

months after finishing the Prednisone treatments, but I " seem " to be reacting

much faster. For the two and a half years we have been testing, my protein has

been darn consistent around the 200 mark ( but for a dip while I was pregnant to

the 70's). My last test (one month after the first three doses) the test read

at 89. Now, none of us are holding our breath, but I admit to crossing a finger

or two! This could just be another funny " blip " but we are hoping!

I have been lucky not to have allot of side affects from the Prednisone.

I am losing weight, at about 4 lbs a month, but some of that is due to more

energy allowing me to exercise more.

I am growing hair a stupid rate. A quick way of out growing a bad hair cutting

choice made a few months ago, but it is also growing in fabulously glam areas

like my toes! NICE!!!!!!!

I have noticed that my skin is allot more sensitive and dry, and I bleed like a

" son-of-a-gun " yesterday when they attached the IV. (Spooked the nurse!)

But from what I understand the Altace, and the BUCKETS of Fish oil that I am

taking would be thinning my blood too.

Hi ,

The high energy is actually pretty common. My friend's mum (in her '80's)

had it and she really really went to town cleaning and shopping.

We never wanted to get off pred, but for other reasons. had a very

good response to it, with minimal side effects. Getting off of it was a bit

scary. We could have stayed on that lastg 5 mg forever.

I can't wait to get off prednisone. I wish it had made me feel hyper

but I have just the opposite. It has depleted my muscles and made me

feel tired and weak all the time. I have been on it since early

March and am now tapering slowly. Can't wait to find out if it

really is the prednisone causing all this - or something else! Lucky

you!

Hi Tasha,

I wanted to piggy back on Amy's comments. It can be extremely dangerous to

just stop taking Prednisone on your own. It is vitally important to be weaned

off slowly. I know Prednisone can be hard on the body and on the moods, but it

can really help the kidney function so sometimes the side effects are worth

the results. Please make sure you only stop the Prednisone with your doctor's

help in a slow wean.

By the way, I first had symptoms as a young teen myself, and now 30 years

later I am still not on dialysis. In fact, I really have not had any

significant

problems up until the last few years. Being careful now can really help to

protect and preserve the kidney function for the future.
