Hi Wombat,

That is news to me. My renal dietitian told me root beer was good compared

to the phosphorus levels in colas. In fact she recommended trying to drink one

every day as a calorie boost to help prevent weight loss. I will have to be

more diligent in checking for Phosphorus.

I do not know of a site that lists the contents, but I am sure if you call

the manufacturer you would be able to get the nutritional contents that way.

Thank you so much for bringing that to our attention.

Even if there is some, it's probably not enough to worry about. I've never

come across any listings of ingredients such as we might need as renal

patients. The only other thing I can suggest is to avoid all dark soft

drinks (or sodas). I love root beer, and I particularly love Dr. Pepper. Now

that I'm on dialysis, I actually drink some, and Coke too, or a Bark's Root

Beer, while I'm on the machine. Before dialysis, I just chose carbonated

drinks that I knew were Ok, like ginger ale, cream soda, 7-Up, etc. Or you

can just make some Kool-Aid.

Hi Pierre,

Yes, I love Dr. Pepper and Coke, but I'm having a horrible problem

with Phsophorous, even on dialysis. So it was suggested I stick

with root beer or " non-dark " sodas.

Hopefully I'll get it under control so I can have a Coke once in

awhile.

Thanx for your comments.

Hi Wombat

Your monthly blood work numbers are your guide (as are of course your

dietician and nephrologist). Some people on dialysis still handle some

things like phosphorus and potassium better than others. Even in people who

are pre-dialysis, there are differences like that.

Phosphorus is the one thing that the artificial kidney is not efficient at

removing. So, even on dialysis, it's necessary to watch the diet. It removes

a lot of it, but not enough.

My phosphorus number is always well within the " normal " range. But, I have

virtually no dairy products except butter, so, it may be that the little bit

of phosphorus in a Coke is Ok for me. Of course, I woudn't drink one every

day. Only every once in a while on dialysis, usually on Saturdays. I have a

cold can of Coke and a bag of potato chips. It's my only vice :)

There are already enough restrictions on my life, I'm not going to give up

my once a week can of Coke :)

Last weekend, we had some pizza at home, and, I started out eating one, then

another one, and finally I had eaten 3 large slices. By the time I got to

dialysis on Tuesday evening, I thought for sure my BP would be through the

roof from the sodium, but no, it was 140 over 80-something. Over the past

year, I've gradually learned what I can and what I cannot tolerate. My labs

numbers have been good every single month during that time, and my BP is

pretty good on just one med (and not even at the maximum dose). I'm not

reckless though. If I eat something that is high in whatever, I make sure I

don't eat other things that might be a problem when it's all added up.
