AmyR, Hey, that is wonderful!!!! What a nice surprise!!! Ok, the timing might be alittle off but within a month or so, she will be all adjusted to her new family!!!! What are you going to name her? What color is she? Oh I wish I had a new kitty....ok, I have a huge doggy and 2 cats....I guess I will have to be happy with that!! How did she do last night? What does your doggy think of her? Enjoy!!!!!!!

Amy, I think Scamper is a cute name!!! RE: A surprise for me! I'm sure you are right...in a few days we won't remember not having akitten. I really am excited about her, right now I just think I'm still inshock and keep thinking about all the things that are going to have to bedone! I think we decided to name her Scamper. It's so hard to name them inthe beginning...like with the dog, if I could change his name now that Iknow him, I could pick a much more fitting name, but I guess we need to callher something besides "baby kitty" -AmyR

That is so sweet. I keep thinking that it has been a while since a

stray has crossed my path..that is a good thing because I can't turn

away an animal, and my 2 big dogs are going to be a lot of work with

a new baby as it is! I think your puppy and new kitty will be well

adjusted by the time your little one comes! Set up the baby stuff and

start using baby lotion. Supposively that helps them get adjusted

better. I even put a doll in the stroller and I push it around

sometimes :-)

Thanks for the tips on adjusting baby and pets. I was at the vet last week

for routine stuff with the dog and she gave me an article to read and gave

me some hints. So you really do the stroller thing? I thought that I would

look so silly, but I guess it would be worth a little silliness to have

everyone get along! And one really cool thing (I thought so anyway) that

she told me....she was listening to a pet behavioralist type guy on the

radio and he said when his wife was pregnant he was panicking a little

because if he couldn't make the transition smooth in his own household, that

his credibility would be ruined (he had 2 grown malimuts (sp?)). So one

thing he did to involve the dogs, is every time the baby needed to be

changed, he had the 2 dogs go with and lay on the floor near the changing

table...he kept a container of dog treats near the table and when he was

done with the baby they would get a treat! He said it worked so well that

in a few days the dogs were coming to HIM when the baby needed to be

changed!! I thought that was an awesome idea and very feasible to do, as

long as it isn't those middle of the night changings

Amy, That is an interesting idea about changing the baby and including the dog. As you know, I have a "big" German Shepard puppy and I am alittle worried about him. I mean, I think he will be ok but is so big, he doesn't realize his own strength and has be at yours side at all times. Our main problem in the house is when you first come home, we still have a problem with him jumping up, he is so excited and we have to work on that!! He lets you pretty much do anything to him, you know, pull his ears and tail and lay down on him so I think he will be good when the baby starts to try those things..... It also crossed my mind, if I could get some sort of tape or cd of a baby crying and making noises that I could play it some now, to get him use to the sounds, so he doesn't freak out or bark when he hears them but I don't know if they have such a thing. Another thing, my dh's cousin told us, since they just had a baby and have had a dog for years and were not sure how the dog would react....their dr told them before you come home from the hospital, to have dh bring home a shirt that the baby has had on for small and let the dog get use to your baby's scent....she said it seemed to help..who knows?.......

That is actually one of the things the vet recommended doing...get the

noises going now so they don't seem so foreign when the baby arrives. Like

when you get the nursery all set up play with some of the toys and wind up

the mobile...things like that. I have the same problem with my dog...he's

not quite as big as yours..he's only about 50lbs, but that is still big

enough. He is such a sweet and loving dog...just loves people and KIDS are

the best! But he is still a puppy and can still be a little spastic at

times, so he needs to be watched cause he doesn't mean to hurt anyone, but

he could unintentionally. It just make life that much more interesting ;P

Okay, I've really started something here! LOL But it is actually pretty

serious, since I am very attached to my animals and would have an extremely

hard time parting with them so I want very much to be successful with this.

I was also told besides bringing home something with the baby's scent, is

for you, the mom, not to walk in the door carrying the baby. Let dad do it

(you've been gone for a bit) and you immediately pay attention to the dog.

That way the dog isn't immediately put on the defense against the baby. And

don't force the baby into the dog's face, let the dog be curious on his own.

I think that's it now...at least all I can remember for today!

No I haven't ever heard of a baby noises tape, but maybe a video...that

would have sounds on it, but I'm not sure if it would have one of them

crying. They usually tend to make happy videos. I know my nephew had

one of just baby stuff and he LOVED it when he was little...he'd just watch

all these other babies playing...it was kind of cute. At least you would

have something with the happy noises on it. The only way I can figure to

get a tape of a baby crying is to actually record someone's child...know

anyone with a small baby?

you to be careful, that was always one of the best parts of being

pregnant was that I was totally OFF litter box duty!! Yea, someone else

had to clean it!

LOL! I like that although, I've tried to make that a permanent rule in our

house, so pg or not, no dog poop duties! My theory was, we already

basically divide chores along the " traditional " men vs. women roles...he

does the outside stuff, I do most of the inside stuff (although he does do

floors if I whine a little !)...so why would poop duty be any different?!

Her name is Scamper. Her coloring...Mostly gray/black tiger striped, but

has this light brown patch right in the middle of her head between her ears

and then her ears look almost like a calico...and big blue eyes! The first

night we had her she slept really good, she got up a few times and cried out

a bit, but would go right back to sleep once I pet her Since then she

has taken to the more typical cat routine of being up most of the night and

sleeping on and off through the day, but luckily for me, she seems to enjoy

picking on Bob during the middle of the night and not me! LOL The doggy is

fascinated by her, but he is so hyper when she is around that we aren't

really letting them be together yet...she is just so tiny I'm afraid he'll

accidentally hurt her. So a couple times a day we just get them together

for " supervised " visits so they can start getting used to each other. She

isn't afraid of him (or anything else for that matter!), but she doesn't

really *like* him either. As long as he's out of her immediate space, she

will just go about doing whatever it was she was doing. She has adjusted

*amazingly* well! Now if only the dog would understand when we tell him to

" be nice, she's just a baby kitty " LOL! Our neighbors must think we are

completely insane!!

Amy, She really sound adorable!! Sounds like you are having lots of fun in your house!! That is good that she seems to fit right in. I know when we got Kit Kat she was sooo scared for about a month!! She found hiding places that we didn't know there were!! (boy thing) but when we brought Troubles home, there was no adjustment period needed!! She used the liter box the first 1hr she was there and when poor Kit Kat came down to see what it was, she walked over hissed right in Troubles face and than ran back upstairs but it didn't even bother Troubles! I know what you mean about the doggy needing "supervisored" visits for awhile. I don't know what happened to Apollo lately, he seems to be so "zoned" on Troubles and chases her, that I have to always tell him to "do easy with the kitty cat!" Just wait until we add a baby to all this!! lol!!!
