Guest guest
Wow. How horrible. Somebody posted a site out here a few months ago that her sister-in-law (I think) referred to eliminate the radiation from her body from RAI. I wish I'd bookmarked it. It was all about stuff to eat to get radiation out of your body and to protect your organs from it. Maybe whoever it was will come forward again. Or it might be in the archives for December or January? I just can't remember for sure. Holly help for a friend? Hi Folks, Jeannette here... Maybe the combined knowledge pool here has a word for my friend who has had a radical jaw surgery for cancer and now faces 7 weeks of radiation 5 days a week. She is concerned for her thyroid,( which is in the line of fire) so she found a web page on herbs to take to protect herself while getting radiated. Lots of kelp was suggested ( for radiation in general, but not necessarily near the thyroid.) I wonder about this... The web page is a domain for sale and I can't access it now. She thinks it was herbal-treatment.com. Your comments, concerns, ideas, etc. would be appreciated. So much brainstorming and info sharing goes on here...and so I ask for help for a little thyroid gland getting drawn into an already big fray in a very brave 35 year old mother of three. What do you think? Any references etc.? Thanks, Jeannette
Guest guest
Jeannette, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. Here is a shot in the dark... when ever I have an x ray either at the dentist or the hospital, I REQUEST a thyroid shield. They all have it, but I always have quite the battle geting them to go find it for me ! There are ALWAYS many comments made about how a little radiation could be just the thing for me, since I am hyper. Grrrrr ! It is just like the lead apron they put on you in the dentist chair, but is made to fit around your neck. The web sites that sell this thing to the dentists, say it MUST be properly attached around the neck, and NOT just draped. And my side note on this 'unusual' item...chough, cough...is it costs and whole $100 for the dentist to buy one ! My dentist did have one, but had never used it. No one had ever asked ! -Pam-

In the case of fallout or environmental pollution containing radioactive isotopes of Iodine, consuming safe (i.e. non-radioactive) Iodine will protect the thyroid by preventing it absorbing radioactive Iodine, and also temporarily suppressing thyroid hormone production. If the radiation exposure is not in the form of radioactive Iodine, which I assume is what we are discussing, then I don't think kelp (or other Iodine rich foods) will help, and they might disrupt normal thyroid hormone production if eaten in excess. Speak with the radiologist, they often have tips for dealing with side effects, such as nausea, and I'm sure they will be up on thyroids. Guest guest
I'd think anything with iodine would increase the transport of the radiation to the thyroid, since that seems to be it's function. That seems logical, but I don't know if it's medically valid. Guest guest
Jeannette -- I'd agree with Doris' advice about potassium iodide. We have a tidy supply of potassium iodide in our kitchen cupboard, as we live a mere sixty miles from a nuclear power plant. After researching this issue quite a bit, I felt this was the one thing that I could do that was reasonable, yet not over-reactive. If I was your friend, I would consider taking these. In addition, have her take lots and lots of milk thistle, as this is a non-toxic herb that enormously helps the liver eliminate toxins from the body. Even Weil, benign 'radical' that he is, discusses milk thistle. Good luck to her! B Re: help for a friend? > In cases of a nuclear accident they prescribe potassium iodide. Guest guest
Yes -- I have no illusions that taking potassium iodide would save our lives! I'd too be busy evacuting as quickly as possible. But my thought was that at least, during a speedy retreat, I could forestall the possibility of thyroid cancer (currently all the rage surrounding Chernobyl, unless I have my facts totally wrong -- which could also be the case as this was sort of on the sideline of my attention). I guess I thought having the pills would allow us to avoid at least one problem -- although other ravages from radiation appear to be unavoidable? Guest guest
Debbie I ordered it on-line -- I think I just did a google search on potassium iodid. THe instructions for children and adults are on the bottle, but I think it says to take one pill daily. Again, I'd be rushing out of here as fast as possible, but I would probably take a pill on the way. I asked my m.d. about it and he said it sure couldn't hurt.
