Guest guest
I'd think anything with iodine would increase the transport of the radiation to the thyroid, since that seems to be it's function. That seems logical, but I don't know if it's medically valid. Guest guest
In cases of a nuclear accident they prescribe potassium iodide. Reasoning being that the thyroid absorbs the potassium iodide leaving little to no room to absorb the radiation fallout. Several internet sites selling these pills since 9/11. Guest guest
Jeannette, I am so very sorry to hear of your friend! How scary for her and her family. I know in the archives, had posted using soaking baths of Epsom's Salt to leach the radiation from our bodies. I used 1/2 cup of Epsom's and 1/2 cup of baking soda so my skin didn't dry out. Did this every night for weeks and watched the water turn murky white. This post should be somewhere in the early months of 2000...from maybe March thru September of 2000? I had asked the question during a thread on radiation because I had somewhere in the vicinity of 70-100 X-rays and 6 weeks later 13.9mc of I-131 and suggested I do the soaks to help pull any residual radiation from my body. If you want her e-mail address I can send it to you and you can talk to her directly. I have also put your friend in my prayer circle to go out on prayer lists. I hope she won't mind. Yes, but the reason it works is that the body readily absorbs Iodine in fallout, and it is then collected in the thyroid, taking KI saturates the thyroid with Iodine so less is absorbed. Potassium Iodide doesn't protect you from ionising radiation directly, or from radioactive Ceasium in fallout, which is absorbed into the bones. The kind of radiation treatment discussed doesn't involve ingesting radioactive Iodine (thanksfully). In case of Nuclear accident you take the KI as quickly as possible, and then avoid eating or drinking anything in the affected area (if this is possible!). Around nuclear plants in the UK, Potassium Iodide is stocked for distribution to the public, but I don't have much faith in the plans. To be fully effective it must be distributed and taken almost instantly after an accident, and we have enough trouble getting these people to admit to the scope of leaks and accidents as it is. Also I'd probably be too busy evacuating the area to drive to the nearest doctors and queue for a KI tablet. I'd hazard that everywhere in the mainland UK is within 60 miles of a nuclear power station or major nuclear facility.

Guest guest
Yes -- I have no illusions that taking potassium iodide would save our lives! I'd too be busy evacuting as quickly as possible. But my thought was that at least, during a speedy retreat, I could forestall the possibility of thyroid cancer (currently all the rage surrounding Chernobyl, unless I have my facts totally wrong -- which could also be the case as this was sort of on the sideline of my attention). I guess I thought having the pills would allow us to avoid at least one problem -- although other ravages from radiation appear to be unavoidable? Guest guest
Hi , >>>(currently all the rage surrounding Chernobyl, unless I have my facts >>>totally wrong -- which could also be the case as this was sort of on the >>>sideline of my attention)<<< Your not wrong. I have a couple of web sites that talk about how, all these years later, thyroid cancer is running rampant in children exposed as babies after Chrernobyl.
