Guest guest
Perhaps you want to find a an OB who is more familiar with the surgery. It doesn't sound like this one is. Lenore 1st Dr. Appt Today..Need your Thoughts??? Hi all, I had my first appt this morning with my family doctor (who delivered my 2 yr old). First of all, he wants me to see an OB (not him) to deliver this baby at a hospital that houses a NICU becasue my daughter was 15 weeks early. I'm okay with that, but it will be another month before I can get in to see the ONLY ob in our town that meets that requirement..( Next he told me I absolutely could not lose any weight during this pregnancy...Is that normal for prego post-ops? He said I shoul dshoot for gaining 5-10lbs. His biggest concern was that I wasn't getting enough calories and nutrition for the baby. He told me I should eat at least 1800-2200 calories a day...IKES! I have NO idea how to even come close to that without just stuffing myself with junkfood. Anyone else told to consume such large amts? What did you do? He also put me on chewable prenatal vitamins and told me to take liquid iron..OMG..I have no idea how bad that might be!!! I am worried that it might be dangerous..anyone else take liquid vitamins? Anyone take prenatals in the pill form?? Lastly, since I will be almost 3 months out before I can get in to an OB, I am wondering if I should try to go to a nutritionist on my own. Anyone here go to a nutritionist? Is it a must do? How did it help you, etc?? Sorry this is soo long, but I am getting frustrated after two different doctors and still not getting the info I feel I need. No one seems to have a clue about RNY and what my body can and can not do anymore. I am so looking to you gals for some information to get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks so much!!! Guest guest
I think it is wise for you to be seen by a doc that delivers with a NICU in-house. If I had been in your situation and delivered any of my children so early I'm sure the knowledge that I was being seen by a doc with access to the NICU would be calming. Regarding weight gain and caloric intake. When I first got pregnant (I'm 25 weeks along now) I saw a nutritionist the week I found out about the pregnancy. I was told to increase my current intake by 300 calories....which at that point would have made my intake about 1100 calories a day. I was able to do that by adding a few snacks throughout the day. Now I have no problem getting in 1800 because I actually feel hungry for the first time since surgery. It is almost scary having hunger pangs again but I know that my slow gain is good for the baby. I lost 11 in the first trimester (even after adding the extra 300 calories) and now I have gained all of that back. I figure by the time I deliver I will have gained about 15-20 pounds. I definitely have a " hearty appetite " although my friends would say that I still eat like a bird. I just eat all day long. If nothing else my nutritionist gave me good ideas to increase the caloric intake in a healthy manner. For example, I eat lots of cheeses and nuts now. Carbs seem to go down easier for me than protein so I tend to graze on crackers or something on a day when food isn't appealing. I don't take liquid vitamins so I can't help you there, but I do take a prenatal every night. I think if you are worried about the vitamins you might call your surgeon and see what he/she suggests. Regarding seeing a nutritionist ... I didn't get much info out of mine EXCEPT she gave me a plan to add the extra calories in. I work well with plans or goals ... so that helped. I don't know what others would advise. If your town doesn't have people that know much about RNYs then I wouldn't bother. If someone is familiar with the requirements of both situations then I'd see that person. Hope this helps. 1st Dr. Appt Today..Need your Thoughts??? Guest guest
Marrika, Don't worry about seeing an OB, just a precaution and a good one to take at that. As far as losing weight, I just totally stressed about it and have lost 50 lbs so far w/ this pregnancy...I have tried not to lose, but honestly I'm not sure if there is anything you can do about it..I've stopped stressing over it..I was told I should be eating about 2500 calories a day..yeah right!! It's impossible with us!!! I eat about 1000-1200 and baby is growing just fine!! I take prenatals in pill form, don't have any trouble w/ them. I also take Chromagen which is a liquid iron and do ok with that as well. I do see a nutritionist..her goal at first was for me not to lose any weight..well my wt loss has slowed down..she gave me all sorts of ideas for high-calorie foods and that sort of thing..but my main goal is to not have any ketones in my urine(I found out a few months ago that ketonic urine can cause mental retardation in unborn babies)..so in order to do that, just make sure you eat something every few hours and honestly, I'm hungry every few hours, so it's not a problem for me!!! Sorry this is so long, just wanted to address your questions..I totally understand your anxiety..
