You should always read labels and if you

have doubts you can call the manufacturer to check out questions. The

files are a great place to look for ideas so you know where to start. If

something is in the files I usually feel very comfortable just checking the

labels.

Some people have a reaction to the

maltitol in chewing gum. It frequently causes gas and diarrhea in lots of

folks – not just celiacs. Many don’t react at all. I

don’t know if that is in the gum you tried. We chew Extra all the

time. It has maltitol and it doesn’t bother us. I have 2

friends that won’t touch it – and it has nothing to do with gluten.

Good Luck finding a gum that works for

you.

yesterday I requested info on

chewing gum. I was directed to the silly

yak files for candy and gum...........there I

found Bazooka listed as a

safe gum............today I am having gas and

diarrhea .........no more

files for me. By the way i had one piece of

bazooka gum :-(

What does the ingredient list say for the

Bazooka gum? Are there any mystery ingredients there? It would be

extremely odd for it to actually have gluten. I think it is far more

likely that you were contaminated by something else.

Do you share a toaster oven, condiments,

wooden utensils, pasta strainers, etc. with gluten eaters? These are very

common sources for problems. I even make sure that my shampoo and

conditioner don’t have wheat in them because I decided I was having

issues with those in the past. It is hard to get a hold on these

contamination issues at first. It is much easier if you go to an all gf

kitchen but many people do not have that option. So, you have to be super

careful – I was never even remotely inclined to be a clean freak in the

past but I watch everything that happens in the kitchen now!

Another thing I didn’t watch at

first – and learned the hard way - is that even tea can have

gluten. I don’t see it often but some flavored teas contain barley

malt. It took me a while to figure out it was the tea that had

contaminated me earlier this year. It was clearly written on the label –

but my quick glimpse in the store didn’t notice – grrr! That

was frustrating. But, I learned to check even on drinks.

All you say is true but my point is this a celiac list and you would

think our files should have accurate info! Or they shouldn't be there at

all...........I am a newly DX'd and I trusted this group and got ill because I

did.

Food

companies have the right to change their ingredients at any time. You

cannot assume that something will remain gf forever just because it is right

now. You always have to check labels.

The thing I find most helpful is to get

familiar with the food companies that will accurately label food without hiding

any gluten ingredients. Kraft, Con Agra, General Mills, are some that

come to my mind. I try to buy from companies I know that I can

trust. I really don’t depend on lists – but – I find

them very helpful late at night or on weekends when the option to call a

company is not available. The lists are a great resource to go to for

options – it is overwhelming at first to face a whole grocery store full

of labels. The lists give you a starting point. As you become more

familiar with the diet it will become much easier.

You may also identify other ingredients

that you are sensitive to as well. Not all bloating is due to gluten

– though sometimes it is hard to tell the difference if you do not a very

strong reaction to gluten.

The only chewing gum that I have

identified that actually does contain gluten is Altoids gum. There may be

others – but I generally trust the labels on gum since most come from the

large food companies.

Then what is the sense of the files if it is not a SAFE place to get

answers? Then in reality all foods should be listed there, doesn't make sense

at all.

Mimi - In addition to the suggestion for you to look in the files,

someone posted a recent email from Wrigley's on all their gum (dated

12-20-05). It is generally better to rely on recent manufacturer

supplied information than on ANY list.

Melonie and others put in a tremendous amount of time on the lists,

and, short of making phone calls as a full time job, no one could do

a better job keeping them current.

Mimi,

You should also know that being GF might

not solve all of your problems. I had a (new and unfamiliar) knot in my guts

for a full month after going GF (which means that the knot’s been gone

for a week. I can drink coffee again, thank goodness.) I don’t know why.

I’ll check with the GI on Monday to ask about other allergies or

sensitivities. Tonight my ds (also gf) said, “Mom, this juice makes my

stomach hurt as soon as I drink it.” I couldn’t figure out which ingredient

offended (Twister Kiwi, not 100% juice) so I just tossed it.

I wish there was a huge and definitive of

everything we can safely eat. Maybe as labeling laws improve and Celiac becomes

more known it will be easier.

Your right, I consider it a lesson learned about using the files. I won't

be making that mistake again. And yes I saw the Wrigley post the day after

the other post.

And I understand people put a lot of time into the files and I have no issue

with that..........my point is accuracy.

People got all crazy here a few days ago over Mc's and their lack of

accuracy.....do you remember? LOL People wanted to shoot first and ask questions

later!

The bottom line is I will only trust myself to check out what is safe to

eat from this point on. Tomorrow is another day and thankfully the side effects

seemed to have subsided :-)

While similar I suppose in some ways, the two threads are completely

different. McD's themselves provided the information that the fries

were gluten free. That's a little different than a list compiled by

volunteers (that, incidentally, comes with a clear disclaimer that

you should always call the manufacturer). On the list, it also

clearly indicates that Bazooka was contacted in Oct 2004. For me,

that's not recent enough to be counted on.

Short of preparing all your own food from scratch, you are going to

get glutened no matter how careful you are. It sucks, but it

happens.

Mcs was an excellent example of how

companies can change ingredients without any public notification. The only way

to keep files completely accurate would be to contact every company every day

and make sure they haven’t changed they’re process. (They couldn’t

even keep they’re list accurate) An impossible job. That’s what

makes this list great, we get the benefits of others findings.

Thanks,

Judy
