Tory - I sure wish there were more teachers like you. My mom wanted to

teach, but her parents would not let her - they made her go to secretary

school! (My grandmother got pregnant at 16 in 1947 and " had to " get

married. Since she could not go to college and had to be a secretary

she said it was good enough for my mom and that was all she deserved for

ruining her life!) Hello? Needless to say we do not see or speak to her

- she is a beast! I am not bashing the secretarial field, just it was

not what my mom wanted - she wanted to be a teacher and had the grades

to go on a scholarship, but they would not allow it!

She is like you, she would go to bat for those kids no matter what. She

has taught Sunday school at different times and has always had the " bad

class " - the ones that were uncontrollable or were not perfect. They

all flourish with her and make a change for the better all because

someone bothered with them! Just goes to show you that you should

always follow your dreams no matter what.

My dd is only 9 and 3/4 (she makes sure I stress that 3/4) and I hope

when HS comes around she has some cool teachers like you who really care

about the kids. I am sure that your students will never forget you.

Second week of school

Good week! Busy...it went SO fast! Here are my good things for the week.

What are yours?

10. School went quite well despite worries from everyone that the kids

would be bitter. Not at all! No one has even brought the strike up

except Thursday when a group of my kids started talking about how stupid

the administration was to even consider replacing teachers. " How could

they replace you? " I replied, " Yeah, it would be hard to replace 650 of

us, wouldn't it. "

" No Mrs. K, how could they replace YOU! You are irreplaceable! "

See, that's why I love this job.

9. Found out Friday that I'm taking six kids to Anaheim next week

Thursday-Sunday. Man oh man did THAT one throw me for a loop, but I

recovered and made the arrangements Friday. It should be a great time.

I'm taking awesome kids that I can totally trust.

8. I really like my new kids. I'm already bonding with some of them. My

numbers started out way low, but I've been able to bring more kids into

all my classes. I even have the son of a former classmate.

7. The union started a suit against the district this week after the

district didn't pay us all we were owed. This resulted in a promise that

we'll be being paid regular wages starting end of this month. I believe

there might be a push to release the money held back before the end of

this month.

6. We had our first student " club " meetings this week. FBLA didn't have

very many people, but FITP sure did! They're really excited about the

year.

5. We put up our Christmas tree tonight and the house is about half

decorated for the holidays!

4. We waved signs for the three school board candidates that we'd like

to see voted in and got only two negative responses, but tons of happy

honks and thumbs up. One man yelled " fire the teachers " (for what??) and

another middle aged gentleman in a compensation...err, big truck flipped

me off. I'm sure that made him feel like a big man.

3. We found a new kitty during the storm Tuesday night. We are putting a

found ad in the paper so hopefully he'll be rescued. If not, I think we

have a new kitty named Stormy.

2. The storm Tuesday night was WILD! The power went out. Fortunately we

had a roast in the crock pot so had a nice hot homecooked meal. We lit

the fire, set out candles and played cards. When the power came back on,

we just turned the lights off and kept playing because it was so

peaceful.

1. I got a new student with behavior disorders this week and I was

really concerned that kids would tease him. I talked to a few about him,

carefully of course. I think they'll take him under their wings and make

sure he's not picked on when I'm not around. I also managed to keep

another kid in my class who committed a crime related to computers this

year. He's a very very needy kid who really NEEDS to feel a part of

something and he absolutely loves being on the tech team and in

Networking. They were going to transfer him out of both classes, then

found out they couldn't since the crime wasn't committed at school. Then

they didn't want him on the tech team, but I argued that it was too

important to him and it would be devastating to him to be taken off.

Truth be told, he is a handful to deal with and he drives me insane at

times, but sometimes you know that you just have to go to bat for a

kid...even if it would be easier to let it go.

Thanks Jenn

That is so sad about your mother and grandmother. She (grandmother)must

have been a very sad sad woman to be so awful.

I love what I do and have never regretted my decision to teach. It's the

best job in the world.
