Guest guest
I would have hid it in my bra - screw him! Let him TRY to search there - LOL. Give me a break! Search my purse? Tell them you are a diabetic and cannot have the snacks that they offer and will go into a diabetic coma w/out your pria bar - lol. Some people get a real kick out of having a " taste " of authority. Were they going to cover the loss of your purse after you were told to put it in the car in front of other people who could have gone out and stolen it knowing full well you would be in the movie for 2 hours? I think not. I would have not been as nice as you were! Jenn Subject: Snacks & the Movies Okay, my husband and I went to see " Love Actually " last night with some friends that got free tickets to a sneak preview. As I always do, I made sure I had a few low point snacks in my purse in case I got hungry during the movie. I had a pack of gum, one sucker, three hard candies, and a Pria bar (that I always keep in my purse just in case I get hungry). As I get up to the ticket taker, he tells me he is going to have to search my purse (I figure this is for safety reasons) but he says it is to make sure I didn't bring candy or cokes into the theater. Now, I've been going to this theater since it opened and they have never done this. Must be a new policy. Anyway, he told me I would either have to take my purse back out to the car or throw away the snacks. WHAT?! I mean, I understand they want moviegoers to buy their food and drinks, but come on, it wasn't like I had large boxes of candy in my bag. Lots of people carry that amount of food in their purse all the time! It really irked me because my husband and I always buy from the concession stand anyway. He always gets a snack and drink, and I always purchase a diet coke. We would have bought the same thing regardless of what " snacks " I had in my purse. I ended up taking my purse out to the car (I don't throw away perfectly good food), so I decided to see what options the theater had for snacks, even though I was so angry I wouldn't have bought any regardless. Horribly unhealthy popcorn, gigantic boxes of candy, and huge bags of chocolate was all I saw. The only thing remotely low point was a $4 box of sweet-tarts or a $3.50 bag of black licorice that would feed a small country. (Making it so I would have to eat one or two servings and IGNORE the rest--hello, not easy for someone with food issues!) I don't like either of those types of candy. I think if movie theaters are going to monopolize what you can snack on during a movie, they should offer smaller portions and healthier options. Okay, rant over... Guest guest
You shouldn't have to make excuses for wanting to eat healthy. Tell the manager that all they sell there is crap and you don't want that stuff in your body. I personally do not understand the whole " Snacking and Movie " combination. I am not a movie snacker so when we go to the theatre, we are there to see the movie, not to eat. We occasionally get a drink but that is rare, as I would be getting up every 5 minutes to go to the potty We talk all the time about changing our " lifestyle " wouldn't this be part of that. To not have to associate food with the movies? Just a thought. Re: Snacks & the Movies I called the movie theater this morning to complain to the manager, but he wasn't in yet. Guest guest
Well they can always claim that the searches are for weapons. Then if they find snacks in your purse it's incidental and since they aren't allowed either they can ask you to remove them. We have a lot of big electronics stores with signs as you walk in saying that large purses and backpacks must be checked at the door and stored in a locker. In this case it's to prevent people from stealing though. Bottom line is that if you don't like the store or theater policy then don't go there. Either that or get better at hiding your snacks ) I do like the diabetic idea though, that's a good one! But you are right, this should be part of a lifestyle change. There is no reason why I can't sit for two hours without feeding my face. I get into this discussion about going to a baseball game when someone complains about the high cost of food at the ballpark. I suggest it is possible to sit for a three hour baseball game without eating. But there is something about sitting in a dark movie theather that just screams POPCORN. Guest guest
While coming back from San Francisco, I grabbed a box lunch that my company provided (a chicken wrap sandwich) and headed for the airport. Some other guys wanted to stop in at the airport restaurant/bar for a sandwich/drink. I went with them and pulled out my sandwich. The waiter told me I couldn't eat it there .... I said, " fine, so long - guess you don't want to make any money on the six or seven beers I was going to have " :-). I headed to the gate and ate there. I don't get it ... sometimes people can be so foolish .... On the movie snacking issue - I never partake of the snacks - can't see paying those prices - and I don't feel the need to snack during the movie either - I just eat before I go.... Guest guest
Since it's my post that started this conversation, and I am an attorney, I feel a little responsible to clear up the law on whether the theater could search my belongings. Technically, it was completely legal what they did. They did not need probable cause and it wasn't a violation of my civil rights because they are not a government entity. Rather, they are a private business, they can decide the perimeters of what can and cannot come into their establishment. I chose to pay my money and walk in, therefore, if I don't like their rules, I just don't go in. I understand that they make all their money on concessions. What bothers me I guess is that the only " concessions " available are all unhealthy. A person trying to lose weight or living a healthy lifestyle just cannot eat what they have to offer. I wish they would jump on the bandwagon that fast food has jumped on (providing healthy alternatives, okay so maybe as long as you don't put the DRESSING on the salad!) so that they could meet everyone's needs. Maybe it's too expensive or maybe they just don't care. Who knows? I'm not a big snacker in the movies usually. But that day we were at a special early showing of the movie, so I hadn't had time to eat supper, and I was afraid if I waited the two and half hours for the movie to be over, I would be starving. Anyway, I appreciate all the response my little post got. It's nice to know I'm not alone in wanting to smack that pimpley little teenager that searched my purse! Guest guest
> I know this is getting OT but you say that ANY private business can search > your belongings any time you enter their premises?. Is that correct?. Yea, pretty much. The Fourth Amendment (which prohibits unreasonable searches) is only applicable when the government is involved in the search. Now, most businesses do not implement a policy of cavity searches before allowing you to see a movie, because that would be poor business judgment. But technicially, you chose to go to their business and if they have some policy you don't like, you have to chose to not go there. Guest guest
Now, if any one thinks this is incorrect, please tell me. My understanding as far as outside food goes in a " restaurant " setting, is that it is either a sanitary issue for the restaurant and/or a health code issue. Even if both of these reasons are totally false, the waiter is just doing his job and following guidelines the manager laid down. I was a waitress for 6 years and outside food was a big no-no, unless we got manager approval and the customer was a kid. I'm sure he didn't mean to come off as foolish. 175/150.4/130 Original Message: ----------------- From: Mitch Javeline mitch@... I went with them and pulled out my sandwich. Guest guest
Wow, I can't imagine that! I know that during sneak previews they've been checking bags to make sure you don't have recording devices, but I've never been searched for food. I would write a letter to the manager and state that unless this is a one time incident, that you will not attend that theater again. Tell him that you are unable to eat much of the offerings at the concession stand, but that you have health issues that require you to carry a small amount of food with you at all times. You would have simply purchased what you normally do. It was an invasion of your privacy and NONE of their business what you had in your purse! Good LORD! I bet you'll get an apology, the kid was probably just over-eager...and it won't happen again. Guest guest
I don't think you should judge someone because they are trying for a healthy snack at a movie. I do agree that sometimes we need to break habits that aren't healthy, but there is nothing wrong with making sure you have a healthy snack. My doctor told me to eat a number of small meals a day which means I carry food with me all of the time. It doesn't mean I'm doing anything wrong. But my very polite, ladylike " kaybitch " mode would have come into play--wish I had been with you. kay
