She and her dh were here for dinner about 3 weeks ago (just before she joined) and I was sharing some of my information with her. When we checked the weight charts for goal weights, if I remember right her highest weight should be 145. She is 5'4 " and started at 183 pounds. She is 49 years old. Anyway, she has been somewhat overweight most of her adult life and in the past has been on several " diets " and she said she feels really good at 150 and clothes fit well, etc. My question is, can she set her goal weight at 150 even tho the charts say her highest should be 145?? Guest guest Posted October 24, 2003 Report Share Posted October 24, 2003 Hi Terri, My goal of 145 is above WW goal for my height.....but at 159 I'm in a single digit size and have people questioning if I should lose more weight......I think the guidelines are fine.......but we all know where we feel good....I think your sis should set her goal where she feels she will look andfeel good, despite what WW says......bone density and muscle tone have so much to add. He/She may ask that you loose more than the top of WW ranges. Our WW leader told us that one of the gals in her other meeting is very tall and she wanted to set her weight goal at about 10 lbs higher than WW. Our leader agreed with her because she looked great and she was fairly large boned and so she told her to go ahead and get a note from her doctor. She went to her doctor and he recommended that she loose another 20 pounds!!! She was very upset and was thinking about quitting WW. Our leader felt terrible about the whole thing. This all came up when we were discussing how the goal weights are determined. Most of us in our meeting felt there should be some way to factor in a persons body fat and bone structure so that the goal weight can be more individualized. They are set by the insurance companies, and the insurance industry is preparing to lower those weights again in the near future. When I went to get my life insurance increased last year State Farm told me that they were looking to lower them again as a 'whole' industry by 10% since studies have shown that people who weigh 10% less than the current insurance standards live longer more healthy lives. Like in my case when I was at 165, I could wear a 6/8-pants/skirts/*some* dresses--I have an 8 dress that I can fit. Because the boob fairy hasn't found her way to my house, most tops are a different story. Actually I think she has, I think she's adding what she's taking from others to me. If I went down to what my height/weight chart says, it would probably put me in a 2/4. I was almost in some 4s as it was at 165. I had gotten down to 155 and couldn't maintain that very well. I maintained really good at 165, until a lot of stress came into my life and some of the weight came back on. But I feel much better at 165 than I would at 145. Terri wrote:Wow, that is too bad. So that's why a lot of folks can weigh more and wear smaller sizes. A lot of athletes are considered to be obese or very overweight on the height/weight chart, but the majority of them are nothing but muscle. First of all, to quit WW just because a doctor thinks she should lose 20 more pounds is just plain childish. You've found a program that works for you (not you...but the collective you, or maybe I should say she) and you're going to quit because the doctor said something you didn't like. Please. Second of all, perhaps the doctor found something on the physical that caused concern. What is best for our bodies and what we think may be best, may not always jibe. If she felt that the doctor was off, there is more than one doctor in the world. She could have seen another one. Someone like that will be back doing it all over again, I guarantee. That person was more interested in looks and money than a lifestyle change and good health.
