Guest guest
had a PFT last December while in the hosp with pneumonia. She turned 2 the following July. They gave her syrup (can't for the life of me remember the name of it) and it pretty much knocked her out - this is done to ensure the accuracy of the test - being as they can't rely on her to breath in and out on demand. They wrapped her in a type of tubing similar to a blood pressure cuff - that way when she breathed out - it would apply pressure to make sure all air was exhaled from her lungs. It was totally painless for her and the best thing was she at least got some rest during this time - which, as most of you know is impossible in the hospital. The whole procedure lasted about 45 minutes - 1 hour. The medication gradually wore off about 1 hour after the PFT was complete. She awoke fine - not groggy or anything - just like she had taken a nap. The only thing that upset me during everything was when the medication started to take effect, she acted like a drunk. She lost her motor skills and was like a rag doll. She however, thought this was funny. I had her stroller there so I pushed her around until she conked out - this was a big plus being as she was dead weight. Hope some of this helps. , Mommy to 2.5 yowcf and asthma Got another blizzard here in ol' Kentucky last night - but was blessed with a heat wave of 25 degrees this morning. Take care and Merry Christmas! & Traci, I never knew a child that young could have a pft. They dont do it here unless the child is 5 or over as they said its not worth it as it wouldnt be correct.
