Guest guest
I AM THE ONLY MEMBER OF MY FAMILY WHO IS NOT LACTOSE INTOLERANT OTHER THAN MY KID WITH CF. I guess I just worded that wrong. My g.i. doc, who is a neighbor and personal friend at this point says that he thinks that the likli- hood of a cfer being intoleranct to any sugar: lactose, galactose, maltose, the mono- saccharides--you name it IS greater than in the average population not because the patient has inherited the classic lactose or whatever intolerance, but because of the nature of the pancreas in most, but not all, cf patients; some sugars, like some fats just can't be metabolized by some of us. In the general population, he says, Asians are most likely to be lactose intolerant, then persons of recent African ancestry, then Jewish persons (which explains the rest of my family), and other asian-pacific island populations such as Indonesia, Polynesia, Micronesia, Australian native pop- ulations and the Maori on the New Zealand islands. He's really into this, but pointed out that he has treated people from all demographic groups who seem to have lactose intolerance; I know he is largely right; my husband's entire family of German and Austrian origin Jews are lactose intolerant as are many of my relatives in Spain, Portugal and Italy. If you type in Human Genome Project on Yahoo or Google, you can probaby, if you read carefully, find the " chromosome launchpad " --its real name-- and choose the disease entity list and find on many chromosomes all the sugar in- tolerances. Dr. Wu feels that these are often inherited, whereas the fat/oil intolerances are, except for the Mediterranean area, largely acquired and eventually become inherited. So, you ask me a simple question--you get a whole pontification! That will teach you! Seriously, though, I hope this has been helpful. I have to leave again before you remember that this is " only the patient " speaking, and not a doctor, and before I get arrested for practicing medicine " with license, poetic that is! " Have a safe new year and eat a lot! (Chomp! Chomp!) n
Guest guest
I think another point here might be that people with CF and carriers of CF tend to have more allergies, too. (thought not always). The lactose intolerance could be linked to that. Guest guest
Lori, my doc says that lactose intolerance is totally unrelated to allergy to milk, though there is no law that says that one cannot have both; my middle daughter does, and as you remind us, she is one of thos marvelously " allergic to everything " people, " and she is a cf carrier. I have cf and am allergic only to scallops--BIGTIME, and possibly to whole wheat and egg yolks--nothing compared to my middle daughter. Most of my cf relatives and friends have far more allergies than those in the non-cf population though and it just aggravates the whole situation, which is what led to my becoming " the neurotic cook at work, " I think. Good luck and good health to you in this new year, n Rojas
