Guest guest
Hello Barry, has gotten thrush from the antibiotics, and from the sounds of it, Harry has been on the antibiotics for awhile now. If he is on Nystatin for his mouth, you could try using a piece of gauze and putting the med on that and wiping his mouth, sounds gross I know, but it may help. They also make little spongy things that you can use to dip the med in and let him suck on it, it keeps the med in the mouth a little longer. Glad to hear that the PA is gone for now. Guest guest
Barry Thrush can happen in babies with Cf and babies without CF. All of my kids had it as infants, at one time or another. Typically, it is related to antibiotic use, as the antibiotics also decrease the good bacteria in the mouth, basically, and allow for over growth of candida albicans, which is yeast....and that is what causes thrush. It is also pretty common in nursing babies. I also understand that use of oral steroids can also lead to thrush, which is why they tell you to rinse their mouth really well after nebs. I would imagine that Tobi might have this affect, also, if you dont' rinse their mouth well. Hope this helps.... Also, I saw your post about Cf and having future children. Your baby is still really young. He may do well, or he may not....all that depends on lord only knows what. Our Mallory has been our sicker one, and she is still pretty young, but the other kids do pretty well. There is so much more hope for children with Cf these days......the treatments are so much better, and there is much more hope. Just another perspective. Please don't give up on your son quite so soon. Take care Jen Mommy of 7, including ph 19 months with CF, Mallory 3 with CF, RAD, GERD, OSA, port-a-cath; 4 with CF, asthma, port-a-cath; 6, Miranda 9, Brittany 7 yo foster daughter with Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) soon to be adopted by us; ERica 4 yo foster daughter, soon to be adopted by us also ; also aunt to 3 yo with CF
Guest guest
OH, Barry, I forgot, if the nystatin doesn't work, and ginga violet doesn't work (spelled wrong???), then Diflucan always did the trick for my kids. (the only thing was, we had to stop the propulsid when they were on diflucan.....but that should not be an issue these days, since its off the market anyway...) Guest guest
, Thanks for the tip, I assumed that he got the thrush because of the hard balls of the enzymes scrapping his mouth I didn't realise that the antibiotics could cause it. Guest guest
Jen, Thanks for the post, the Dr's never told us to rinse his mouth after the NEB's so that may have caused it. We always give him his Fluclucilin and cipro just before his feed so that he swallowed them so if it was due to antibiotics it must have been the NEB's. Next time we will rinse his mouth out after the NEB's and see if it helps. Please don't get me wrong about Harry, I have not given up on him, my wife and I will fight to get him the best treatment and give him the best chance of survival. However I am a realist and I feel that you should hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Regards, Barry Re: Harry Barry Thrush can happen in babies with Cf and babies without CF.
