Guest guest
Hi, I`ve been lurking for a while and I think you are a great group of people.I`m Donna 43,married to Dennis for 25 years. We have 4 children and are starting to feel the empty nest looming around the corner. About 5 years ago I had a bypass.I lost about 45 pounds. Now I am still 30 pounds lighter than before the surgery.I am really disapointed and have beaten myself up over and over. It`s very embarassing when people have high expectations (mainly family)of you weight loss and it never really happens. As time passes I wonder if it is totally my fault.Have any of you ever had your surgery redone? Is it possible to have it redone? I would also like to add that I had to have two major hernia repairs, also. My doctor has started a support group but I can`t imagine he would want to see me there since I`m not exactly a success story. I must also say that without the surgery I could still be gaining and maybe weigh alot more than I do now.I also got rid of my nasty gallbladder and that terrible refux is gone too. I hope I don`t sound too whiney.I actually have a great life I just wish I wasn`t so darn big.My feet have hurt me so much lately that some days I don`t know if I can do anything.Ok enough whiney.I would really like to know about having my surgery redone. Thanks for listening(or reading) Donna from Texas
Guest guest
Hi Donna, Welcome to the list. Any chance you may have had a staple line disruption? Sometimes there is structural failure in the surgery somewhere and it isn't able to work like it is supposed to. A lot of people have had revisions of their original surgery if it has not done its job. I would definitely see your surgeon or pursue a new surgeon. It sounds like your surgery has failed you in some way Are you able to eat large amounts of food? Do you eat a lot of sugary things? How about protein supplements? We can help you get back on track. There is a wealth of knowledge here! Guest guest
Hi Donna -- had a RNY, short proximal 09/2000 and lost 85 lbs (BMI 57 to 42). Was doing many of the right things, protein, exercise (some), etc. Meal volumes were pretty big because I was hungry and not able to get full. Decided to change surgeons. New surgeon did a revision 06/21/02, now a distal (common track 47 " ), found my outlet was big so he banded it. No problems now with meal volumes 1/2 cup does it well. Have lost 56 lbs since revision for a total of 141 lbs (BMI 32.7). For me a revision was the right thing. I do not believe I would have seen any more weight loss without correcting the large outlet and creating malabsorption. Guest guest
Hi Donna - Welcome to our group and thanks for coming out of lurking status. It's nice to have you with us. I think finding a different, and hopefully better surgeon to take on your case would be the best thing to do. Then you can address the issue of a revision. Something must not be right from the first surgery. Do you follow the rules of the pouch? Are you drinking with your meals? Do you supplement with protein? Do you take vitamins every day? There are some things you could try to see if some more weight would come off. Let me know if you'd like some more suggestions. Good luck with trying to get a revision done. Take care. Guest guest
Do you know if your original surgery was transected? Can you say who your doc is? What was your post-op regimen? There's every possibility that your wt loss today is due to mechanical issues, not character flaw. Yes, many of us have been revised. m Intro and question Hi, I`ve been lurking for a while and I think you are a great group of people.I`m Donna 43,married to Dennis for 25 years. We have 4 children and are starting to feel the empty nest looming around the corner. What kind of surgery did you have? What do you usually eat during the day? Are you using protein shakes? If so, what kind? Have you been scoped to see if your surgery is still intact? There may be something mechanically wrong like a staple line disruption. I know that there are several people on this board who have had revisions either due to a SLD or other problem. Sometimes the revision is to bypass more of your intestine to help you lose more. Being bypassed a long way requires a committment to a lifetime of supplementing your minerals, vitamins and protein, though. I think after you've been here awhile, you will learn that you don't need to beat yourself up. We can help you discover what the problem is and make suggestions to help you. Just keep reading and asking questions. Sheri In Sunny Florida
Guest guest
I don`t really know if my surgery was transected.I do feel like I can eat too much.I had no follow up regimen except for what I was doing on my own(walking, small protein meals,I gave up drinking anything with calories) I guess I just fell back in a bad pattern when I started feeling bad about things. So I do want to get back on track. My doc is a very nice man but when I went to him and told him how discouraged I felt(crying which is embarrassing) He told me he had given me a gift and I was doing something to mess it up.Boy, did I feel great after that!LOL I feel like I put my family through a lot for nothing!wahwahwah Enough whining! What can I do to help myself get back on track?Does everyone find a low carb diet? What suppliments should I be taking?(I was never even told to take suppliments)I am so anemic I may need to have a transfusion. What I have learned,I found out for myself off of the internet. Now I don`t want to put a damper on anyone`s excitement about their surgery.I think it is very worthwhile and would definately do it again if I need to.My recovery was really great.Within a couple of weeks I was pretty much doing what I did before the surgery. One thing though,Wear your binders after surgery to hold things together cause hernia surgeries are no fun.I mean wear it at all times for as long as you need to.Well I have written a novel. Thanks for listening,Donna from Tx Intro and question Hi, I`ve been lurking for a while and I think you are a great group of people.I`m Donna 43,married to Dennis for 25 years. We have 4 children and are starting to feel the empty nest looming around the corner. Guest guest
Dear Donna from Texas, Welcome, welcome, welcome! You wrote that you had your WLS five years ago. A lot of people have what is called a revision. WLS (weight loss surgery) has come a long way in the past five years. I've read that the RNY (roux-en-y) is the " Gold Standard " for WLS but there are lots of other types out there that are highly successive, too! I would consider going to see another WLS specialist and getting a scope done. This simple test will show your surgeon if you have problems that can be fixed with a revision. Don't beat yourself up any longer. Make an appointment and see what you can find out. Good luck and God bless you richly. Love, Trace Open RNY -- 9/5/02 Dr. Schechner, Norfolk and Va.
