Guest guest
Dear Jade, Welcome to the GBIC website and e-mail group. We know you're not looking for pity but we've all got shoulders to lean on for you during this difficult time. I suggest you go to the website and read some of the files there. There is a ton of information out there that might help you make these decisions. Good luck to you and God bless you richly. Love, Trace Open RNY -- 9/5/02 Dr. Schechner, Norfolk and Va. Guest guest
Jade, First off, welcome to the group! One of the best things about this group, is that it has lots and lots of information and experience. Go to the " files " section and read. It took we a year of research before deciding on having this surgery. I have absolutely no regrets about this surgery, but it is a life changing experience and you have to know what you are getting into before deciding on this. Good luck and keep posting. Ask any question you might have. Nan in Ohio 5/13/02 Open RNY 264/

Is it normal for them to do nothing and say it will go away at menopause? I am kind of wanting a second opinion. I don't want to be 32 and have a hysterectomy. Any suggestions or advice? ------------------- I'd like to commend you for not just sitting back and waiting after your doctors told you they were going to do nothing. You're doing exactly what I feel needs to be done when a woman is told nothing more about her fibroids than " watch and wait " -- you're educating yourself. At 32 (or younger?), menopause is a long way off for you and a lot can happen, fibroid-wise, between now and then. First, let me say that, based on current medical practice, what you're being told is accurate. Fibroids are benign and you can safely wait until (and if) they become symptomatic before doing anything about them. The problem is that fibroids can grow to quite a big size and remain asymptomatic, and as they get larger, certain of your options for dealing with symptomatic fibroids are lost. So I feel it's a good idea for a woman and her doctor to discuss early on just what treatment options are available for when and if the time comes, and what size fibroids or what size uterus these options are appropriate for. All too often, women have waited until their symptoms become really severe, only to be told that their only option, given the size of their fibroids and uterus, is hysterectomy. I would suggest you look over our site, www.nuff.org, where you'll find an enormous amount of information about fibroids, the symptoms they can cause, and the various treatment options currently available. Once you've educated yourself a bit, I'd suggest that at your next regular appointment you ask your doctor to go over with you these treatments, which ones he/she offers (not all GYNs are skilled in all procedures, and too often they will only tell patients about those procedures they do themselves), and at what size of fibroids and uterus can these no longer be done. If you continue to read this board, you'll learn quite a bit about how other women choose to deal with their fibroids. And just for the record, I myself was diagnosed with fibroids in my early 30s (uterus size at that time: 8 weeks) and for the next 15 years, they just sat there and did nothing. When I entered perimenopause (the 4-10 years prior to menopause, when a woman's hormonal patterns begin to change), they began to grow rapidly, and at age 47 I had a uterine artery embolization which caused them to shrink. Today, almost 5 years later, I still have my uterus. Guest guest
Leonie, I just knew that I have fibroid last year, it's growing rapidly. Doc said it's about basketball I'm 45. I have seen a radiologist, he thought that UAE is not a treatment for me. My obgyn - said hysterectomy is the only choice for me. Any suggestion? Thanks

Guest guest
Hi Bree and welcome to the group. Although most tumors are not painful there are ladies in the group that have found theirs due to having pain. Caffeine CAN cause problems. I would not wait more than a few weeks at most. I would also insist on talking to your doctor and not the assistant especially seeing that you had members in your family that have had breast cancer and also since you have had cervical cancer. If need be get a second opinion. I will keep you in my prayers. Seeing that there is a family history of breast cancer you should definitely have a mammogram. Our daughters dr started her at age 30 because of my diagnosis. Guest guest
When I found my lump I found it because I felt pain. My dr. examined me and was sure it was just a cyst because 1. it was a little painful and 2. it was well defined, 2 things that they say indicate it's probably not cancer. Guess what, mine was cancerous. Insist that they check it immediately. Don't mess around with it and if it's nothing what have you lost, nothing, but you've gained peace of mind.bnikki30 wrote: Hi, I have some questions I guess, I have had pain on my right breast, and the Physican Assistant, felt and said I had optic changes on both of them, but said if it was cancer it would not be painful right now, so not to worry, but I can't wrapp my mind around it, and wonder if I should be worried, she wants me to have no caffine, and no chocolate, and if there is no change then she will do a mammogram, but honestly im a bit scared breast cancer runs in my family, I have had cervical cancer already, and a hyster at 25, im 30 now, so any information would be a great help please..Bree/scared patient.. Guest guest
Don't wait, anything supicious get it checked. I had a lump show after a breast reduction and they kept an eye on it for a year. It turned out to be a 5.6 cm cancerous tumor that followed by bi-lat. mystectomy, chemo, rads. I had 4 positive lymph nodes out of 14. Don't wait, demand that they check it now. It could be the difference in a lot of options, and your peace of mind. ren
